Histiocytic sarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of mature histiocytes that rarely involves the central nervous system. A 49-year-old man presenting with a mass filling the lumbar spinal canal underwent 18 F-FDG PET/MRI. Fused PET/MRI images showed intense FDG uptake in the mass, as well as uptake in the cerebellopontine angle and cervical lymph nodes. Biopsy of the spinal lesion showed histiocytic sarcoma. The mutations of TP53 gene are frequently observed in canine histiocytic sarcoma (HS). The objective of this study was to examine the distribution of tumor cells with TP53 gene mutations. Tumor tissues were divided into three or four regions and TP53 gene mutations were examined. Initial investigation revealed a haemodynamically insignificant hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, bronchitis and a mild irregularity of the cervical trachea. The authors discuss the diagnostic problems in differentiation of such lesions from other small-cell tumors, primary or secondary, that might involve the tongue.
