Genetic family history questionnaire.

A written questionnaire suitable for obtaining comprehensive genetic family data was developed. The questionnaire was designed to solicit information on the name, date of birth, sex, health problems, date of death (if deceased), spouse, abortions, stillbirths, and offspring of the patient plus first, second, and some third degree relatives of the patient. The questionnaire was evaluated for its effectiveness in obtaining an accurate and complete family history. During the first phase, 77 completed questionnaires were continuously assessed, and the questionnaire was modified until the present v…

Keloids: the natural history.

There is abundant evidence in the literature that keloids and hypertrophic scars are different stages of the same process. The evidence, clinical and histogenetic, also shows that the hypertrophic scar is the earlier of the two stages. It therefore follows that all keloids do evolve through the hypertrophic scar phase. These conclusions have largely eased the confusion of nomenclature and made a clinicopathologic correlation of the available knowledge on keloid possible.

[Natural history of chromoblastomycosis in Madagascar and the Indian Ocean] [Natural history of chromoblastomycosis in Madagascar and the [Natural history of chromoblastomycosis in Madagascar and the Indian Ocean].

The natural history of chromoblastomycosis was studied in Madagascar by analysing the characteristics of 1323 confirmed cases observed since 1955, including 45 patients receiving a new antifungic drug (terbinafine) during a multicentric study organized in 1995. The surveys data, conserved by the histopathology laboratory in the Institut Pasteur of Madagascar during 40 years, permit this retrospective analysis. The description of two ecosystems, one in the North with Fonsecaea pedrosoi evolving in the tropical rainforest and one in the South with Cladophialophora carrionii (41% of the whole sam…

Disease History and Life History Predict Behavioral Control of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

It is puzzling why countries do not all implement stringent behavioral control measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 even though preventive behaviors have been proven to be the only effective means to stop the pandemic. We provide a novel evolutionary life history explanation whereby pathogenic and parasitic prevalence represents intrinsic rather than extrinsic mortality risk that drives slower life history strategies and the related disease control motivation in all animals but especially humans. Our theory was tested and supported based on publicly available data involving over 150 coun…

The History of Loyola Neurosurgery.

BACKGROUND: While most literature on the history of neurosurgery departments feature only celebratory accounts of achievements, this article represents an instrument for genuine reflection on the rich and complex medical past of the Loyola University Chicago Department of Neurosurgery over the 20th and 21st centuries. METHODS: Through conducting faculty interviews and reviewing institutional archives and past departmental publications and records, this culmination examines the evolution of Loyola University Medical Center, a quaternary-care academic hospital centered on its 61-acre campus in …

A brief history of ependymoma.

Ependymoma represents a biologically and clinically heterogeneous group of glial tumors that arise throughout the whole neuroaxis and in all age groups. Whereas intracranial ependymoma is usually found in children, adults suffer mostly from spinal cord ependymoma. In comparison to other neuro-oncological tumor entities, ependymoma has been largely understudied for decades. However, the recent years resulted in unprecedented progress with regard to the understanding of the biological underpinnings and clinical features of ependymoma. Here, we review the history of ependymoma research with a foc…

The history of the discovery of estetrol.

The three major estrogens, estrone (E1), estradiol (E2) and estriol (E3) were identified and characterized in the 1930s; it then took more than 30 years before a new major estrogen, estetrol (15α-hydroxyestriol, E4) was identified. Here we try to highlight the pioneering work of a small group of scientists who made the new discovery possible. The formal identification of E4 was made by a group led by Egon Diczfalusy at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm in 1967, but was preceded by a series of progressive steps beginning in 1955. Besides isolating the new steroid from maternal and neonatal ur

The history of Wolbachia and heartworm.

Wolbachia is the most widespread endosymbiont in animals, and its discovery in Dirofilaria immitis significantly advanced our understanding of heartworm disease (HWD). In 1995, Sironi and colleagues from the universities of Milan and Pavia, Italy, published a study titled "Molecular evidence for a close relative of the arthropod endosymbiont Wolbachia in a filarial worm" (Mol Biochem Parasitol. 74:223-7, 1995). In the 1970s, intracellular bacteria were observed in filarial nematodes by electron microscopy, but no one understood what they were or why they were there. There had been previous rep
