BACKGROUND: In southern Thailand, the low efficacy of albendazole contributes to the unsuccessful elimination of hookworms. Individuals infe … that abnormal haemoglobin may be a host factor contributing to low albendazole efficacy in treating hookworm infections.

Ancylostoma caninum is the most prevalent nematode parasite of dogs. We confirmed multiple-drug resistance (MDR) in several A. caninum isolates to all anthelmintic drug classes approved for the treatment of hookworms in dogs in the USA. Cases of MDR hookworms appear to be highly overrepresented in greyhounds. The aims of this study were to evaluate the drug-resistant phenotypes and genotypes of the A. caninum infecting greyhounds. Fecal samples from greyhounds of the USA were acquired from two greyhound adoption kennels, one active greyhound racing kennel, and three veterinary practices. Fecal

INTRODUCTION: HLA-G plays a key role on immune tolerance. Pathogens can induce soluble HLA-G (sHLA-G) production to down-regulate the host i … d reached maximal levels at delivery. Prevalence of helminth infections was low, with a majority of hookworm infections. We found significantly more hookworm-infected women above the 80th quantile (Q80) of the distribution of the mean sHLA-G level (p < 0.03, multivariate quantile regression). Considering only women above the Q80 percentile, the mean sHLA-G level was …

Hookworm infections are widely prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas, especially in low income regions. In the body, hookworms parasitize the proximal small intestine, leading to chronic intestinal hemorrhage and iron deficiency anemia. Occasionally, hookworms can cause overt gastrointestinal bleeding, but this is often ignored in heavily burdened individuals from endemic infectious areas. A total of 424 patients with overt obscure gastrointestinal bleeding were diagnosed by numerous blood tests or stool examinations as well as esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy o…

A 54-year-old male was admitted because of having suffered from progressive watery diarrhea for 12 days. He had no history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart disease, organ transplantation, or malignancy. After admission, he still complained of diarrhea despite medical treatment. The laboratory examination showed leukocytosis with eosinophilia and a stool examination by the concentration method was negative four times. When a sigmoidoscopy was performed as a part of an explorative survey, a single protruding mass consisting if a moving adult hookworm was found. The fifth stool examinati

A comparative analysis has been made of the efficacy of different chemotherapeutic schemes against hookworm infections in China. Hookworm eggs were detected by the improved Kato's thick smear method. Benzimidazole was offered to residents in the tested villages, while NaHCO3 was used as placebo in control villages. Data were analysed by negative binomial distribution with statistic software R2.2.1. In the tested village as a result of the application of selective chemotherapy, hookworm infection rate decreased from 58.79% to 1.08%, while the average of eggs per gram (EPG) reduced from 526.29 t…

The health risks of wastewater use in agriculture were investigated in the city of Faisalabad, Pakistan, by means of a cross-sectional study. The study showed an increased risk of intestinal nematode infection and hookworm infection, in particular, in wastewater farmers (OR = 31.4, 95% CI 4.1-243) and their children (OR = 5.7, 95% CI 2.1-16) when compared with farming households using regular (non-wastewater) irrigation water. Textile labourers living in the same village as the wastewater farmers showed a lower risk of hookworm infection than wastewater farmers but an increased risk compared w

OBJECTIVE: To describe associations between anemia and hookworm (Necator americanus) infection in hospitalized women in rural Chiapas, Mexico.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the hospital records of 68 anemic women (defined as having a hemoglobin level < 10 mg/dl) or with intestinal parasitism, identified through hospital discharge and transfusion records for the calendar year 1999. The medical charts of 86 cases were located, 18 of which were not confirmed as anemia cases. The hospital is located in Altamirano, Chiapas. Characteristics of subjects were compared using Studen

As a continuing investigation into the immunological reactions involved in hookworm infection the levels of secretory IgA (sIgA). IgM, IgA, complement C3 and C4 were studied in 57 Nigerians with hookworm infection and compared with those of 28 healthy, normal controls. The hookworm patients were divided into three groups based on the degree of anaemia (Hb1-7 and hypochromia +++). Group II had moderate anaemia (Hb8-11, hypochromia ++ and Group III had no signs of anaemia despite the underlying hookworm infection. The patients also comprised those in whom hookworm was the sole infection and thos

The study reports on the association between serum retinol levels and prevalence of two intestinal helminths in a random sample of 592 children, 6-120 months of age. Faecal analyses were performed by Kato thick-smear technique, recording the presence of hookworm and Ascaris lumbricoides eggs. Serum retinol levels were determined by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and expressed in micrograms/dl. The presence of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs was associated with lower levels of serum retinol in children below 60 months of age (p < 0.05). The presence of hookworm eggs was not associated wit

340 cases of hookworm infection, 196 cases of ascariasis and 178 cases of trichuriasis were treated with an anthelmintic, oxibendazole, 15mg/kg.d x 3d; 102, 70 and 66 cases of respective infections were treated with pyrantel 10mg/kg.d x 3d and 108, 74 and 63 cases took placebo for comparison and as control under double-blind observations. Re-examinations of the stool were performed after the treatment. Among the cases treated with oxibendazole, the egg negative conversion rates of hookworm, Ascaris and Trichuris were 70.3-80.6%, 92.5-97.8 and 67.0-71.0% respectively. The egg reduction rates of

The reduction in hookworm egg counts was determined in children treated with 1 and 2 doses of metrifonate. Kenyan primary school children were allocated to receive either 10.0 mg (n = 53) or 7.5 mg (n = 53) of metrifonate per kg of body weight (mg/kg) or a placebo (n = 26). Two doses of 10.0 mg/kg reduced hookworm egg counts (from arithmetic means of 4,177 to 438 eggs per gram of feces [epg]) more than did 2 doses of 7.5 mg/kg (from 4,329 to 1,392 epg; P less than 0.01). Two doses of metrifonate reduced egg counts more than did 1 dose (P less than 0.0001). The placebo group did not show a sign
