Ventricular tachycardia and in-hospital mortality in the intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Continuous electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring is used to identify ventricular tachycardia (VT), but false alarms occur frequently. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the rate of 30-day in-hospital mortality associated with VT alerts generated from bedside ECG monitors to those from a new algorithm among intensive care unit (ICU) patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in consecutive adult ICU patients at an urban academic medical center and compared current bedside monitor VT alerts, VT alerts from a new-unannotated algorithm, and true-anno…

Factors impacting time to surgery and the effect on in-hospital mortality.

OBJECTIVES: Early surgery improves outcomes after burn injuries but is often not available in limited resource settings (LRS), where a more conservative approach is widespread. This study aimed to analyze factors associated with delay in surgical treatment, and the impact on in-hospital mortality. METHODS: All patients with burns treated with surgery between 2016 and 2019 at the Pietermaritzburg Burn Service, in South Africa, were included in this retrospective study. Early surgery was defined as patients who underwent surgery within 7 days from injury. The population was analyzed descriptive…

Cardiac surgery in infective endocarditis and predictors of in-hospital mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious disease with significant in-hospital mortality (15-30%) despite advances in medical and surgical therapy. AIMS: To perform a clinical characterization of patients undergoing cardiac surgery for IE and to identify factors that predict in-hospital mortality. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 145 patients with IE admitted between January 2006 and October 2017. RESULTS: The median age was 72 years. IE was acquired mainly in the community (69%), and involved the native aortic valve in 54% of patients, biological prosthetic valves in 22.1%…

Sarcopenia Is Related to Mortality in the Acutely Hospitalized Geriatric Patient.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is defined as low skeletal muscle mass with poor physical performance, representing a strong prognostic factor for mortality in older people. Although highly prevalent in hospitalized geriatric patients, it is unknown whether sarcopenia can also predict mortality in these patients. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between sarcopenia according the criteria of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP), International Working Group on Sarcopenia (IWGS), Special Interest Group of Sarcopenia, Cachexia and Wasting Disorders (SIG) and Foundation f

Contribution of malformations and genetic disorders to mortality in a children's hospital.

Malformations and genetic disorders are the leading cause of infant mortality in the US. Many malformations have a genetic basis due to genic, chromosomal, or multifactorial causation. We have studied the proportion of pediatric cases in a university-affiliated children's hospital that died of malformations and genetic disorders. We reviewed, retrospectively, deaths over a 4 year period (1994-1998) at Primary Children's Medical Center (PCMC), a university-affiliated tertiary children's referral hospital in Utah. The age at death and the cause of death were recorded for each case. We analyzed 5

The impact of comorbidity on mortality following in-hospital diagnosis of tuberculosis.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Despite the availability of curative chemotherapy, mortality remains high among patients hospitalized for tuberculosis. Although the elevated mortality rate is often attributed to the presence of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) or concomitant infection with the HIV, other factors must be contributory, especially among the HIV-negative population. Therefore, we performed a study to define the factors associated with mortality following the in-hospital diagnosis of tuberculosis in a region with low levels of MDRTB and coinfection with HIV. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort

Maternal mortality in an Israeli hospital: a review of 23 years.

In spite of great strides in obstetrics, maternal mortality has been completely eliminated. Possible changes in the causes of mortality are examined for three periods of time (1954-1961, 1962-1971 and 1972-1976). The overall incidence was 3.6/10 000, changing through the three periods from 4.9 to 4.3 and finally to 3.0/10 000. Vascular accidents were the cause of death in almost one third of the cases, emerging as the most important etiologic factor. Older age and higher parity did not seem to influence the incidence of obstetric deaths. Cesarean section was involved in ten of 23 cases in whic

In-Hospital Mortality Trends and Association of Peripheral Artery Disease on Mortality Risk After Aortic Valve Replacements.

INTRODUCTION: Since 2011, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is an alternative to surgical valve replacement (SAVR). The objective was to describe predictors and trends of in-hospital mortality risk following SAVR and TAVR between 2011 and 2019. We also describe the underinvestigated association between peripheral artery disease (PAD) and mortality risk after TAVR. METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort from the National Inpatient Sample database, we identified operations with TAVR and SAVR as primary or secondary procedures and indication of aortic stenosis. The primary outcome was…
