METHODS: Patients receiving either EN, PN, or SPN treatment followed up by the clinical nutrition team between January and December 2017 at the university research and training hospital were included in the study. Daily nutritional requirements were calculated according to the recommendations. Total energy intake during nutritional treatment (NT) and all metabolic, mechanical, technical complications of NT were r

Beirut Explosion: The Largest Non-Nuclear Blast in History.

A massive explosion have ripped Beirut on August 4, 2020, leaving behind more than 6000 casualties, 800 regular floor admissions, 130 intensive care unit admissions, and over 200 deaths. Hospitals were flooded in patients, the coordination between health care centers was missing. Each hospital was functioning to its maximum capacit

An Eye on COVID: Hurricane Preparedness at a COVID-19 Alternative Care Site.

BACKGROUND: In March 2020, the Louisiana Department of Health activated the Medical Monitoring Station (MMS) in downtown New Orleans. This alternative care site is designed to decompress hospitals and nursing homes overwhelmed by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Given the city's historic vulnerability to hurricanes, planning for possible tropical weather events has been a priority for MMS leadership. METHODS: The planning process incorporated input from all sectors/agencies working at the facility, to ensure consistency and cohesion. The MMS Shelter-in-Place Plan (MSIPP) was

Development and validation of a screen for specialized discharge planning services.

BACKGROUND: There is no rigorously developed and empirically validated screening tool to identify, early in the hospital stay, those adults who will use specialized hospital discharge planning services. OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate a screen using hospital admission clinical data that discriminates between adults who use and do not use specialized discharge planning services. METHODS: Subjects consisted of prospectively sampled adult patients admitted to two hospitals located in a Midwestern United States city in 1998 (tool development sample, n = 991) and 2002 (validation sample, n =

Hurricane Helene: Lessons Learned.

This article examines the response of a community hospital in southern Appalachia during and after Hurricane Helene, a severe natural disaster that highlighted both the strengths and challenges of rural health care delivery. This experience reveals critical lessons for emergency nursing, including the need for flexibility, community collaboration, and comprehensive preparedness plans addressing both patient care and staff needs. By integrating these insights, health care systems can strengthen their capacity to respond to future disasters while supporting their workforce and communities effect

Hospitalisations of patients with cancer in the last stage of life. Reason to improve advance care planning?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine why patients are hospitalised in the last stage of life. METHODS: Our study was conducted in a large Dutch teaching hospital. We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients aged ≥18 years who died of cancer either during hospitalisation or after discharge to receive terminal care outside the hospital. We collected data about the characteristics of these hospitalisations and indicators of advance care planning. RESULTS: Of the 264 deceased patients, 56% had died in the hospital and 44% after hospital discharge. Of all patients, 80% had bee

Hospital CBRN preparedness in Lebanon: a modified Delphi-based assessment tool.

BACKGROUND: Recent global events have highlighted an increasing risk of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) incidents, emphasising the urgent need for enhanced preparedness in the health sector worldwide, especially in low-income countries where burden of exposure is high and limited resources pose significant challenges to effective response. This study aims to develop an assessment tool to evaluate hospital preparedness for CBRN incidents in Lebanon, a low-resource country at high risk for CBRN incidents. METHODS: A two-round modified Delphi method was conducted on 21 Janu

[How beds for tuberculosis be provided and utilized?].

In 1951 when TB Control Law was legislated, and the government of Japan started intensive TB programme mainly consisting of mass health examination, BCG vaccination and distribution of appropriate treatment for TB cases, there were about 100,000 beds for TB, similar to the number of then TB deaths, and many TB patients died before admission to sanatoria. Urgent measures were taken to increase beds for TB with a target of 250,000, 2.5 times of then TB death. The target was achieved in 1957. Thereafter, the number of beds for TB as well as the occupancy rate had decreased with the decline of TB,

Are Saudi Arabian hospitals prepared for the threat of biological weapons?

The use of biological weapons has been recorded repeatedly in history. Until recently, biological terrorism had been little discussed or written about. However, events over the past 12 to 18 months have made it clear that likely perpetrators already envisage every possible scenario. Nations and dissident groups exist that have both the motivation and access to utilize biological weapons. In April 1994, a Russian biological weapons expert presented the conclusions of the Russian experts as to the agents most likely to be used: smallpox, anthrax, and plague. Health care workers in the Kingdom of

Combatting the heat wave of 1980: lessons for the future.

Throughout the summer of 1980, much of the nation suffered record-breaking, sustained hot and often humid weather. In cities throughout the country, the oppressive heat often led to crisis situations, and emergency procedures were hastily developed to provide shelter and medical assistance. The heat wave of 1980 was particularly severe in St. Louis, Missouri. On July 17, hospital visits and admissions related to the heat reached a peak of 54 cases. Death rates soared. During the period from June 21 to July 28, the number of deaths in St. Louis rose by 40.6 percent--from 864 deaths in 1979 to 1

Stakeholders' experiences with US hospital emergency preparedness--Part 2.

This study examined, via qualitative phenomenology, important stakeholders' experiences with US hospital emergency preparedness, finding that their experiences varied from positive and effective to frustrating, time-consuming and inefficient. The findings centred on four themes: the importance of funding; collaboration, communication and coordination; the role of government; and hospital leadership buy-in. Together, these findings suggest that issues such as a lack of performance metrics, insufficient funding, inadequate surge capacity, confusing federal guidelines and accreditation requiremen
