We report here two cases of Legionella pneumophila pneumonia that were markedly improved by parenteral ciprofloxacin administration. A novel sulfur-oxidizing bacterium designated strain mst6T was isolated from spring water of Masutomi hot spring in Japan. The cells were rod-shaped (1.2-4.0 × 0.5-0.7 μm) and Gram-stain-negative. The G+C content of genomic DNA was around 52.6 mol%. The isolate possessed summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0 and C12 : 0 as major cellular fatty acids. Many recent analyses have reported associations between air pollution and mortality in U.S. cities. In this paper, we present the results of regression analyses of daily mortality in Philadelphia during the period 1973-1988. Pollution variables included in the analyses were total suspended particulates (TSP), sulfur dioxide, and ozone. We controlled for the effects of weather on mortality by analyzing mortality separately for each season and explicityly including quintiles of temperature in the regression models. Galdieria partita, a unicellular red alga isolated from acidic hot springs and tolerant to sulfur dioxide, has at least two ascorbate peroxidase (APX) isozymes. Spores of a hot spring isolated strain of Bacillus subtilis were tested as a biotechnological tool to be used for the detoxification and bioremedition of heavy metals. Small river reservoirs are widespread and can be ecologically sensitive across the dry-wet transition under monsoon climate with respect to nutrient loading and phenology. Monthly sampling and high-frequency in situ measurements were conducted for a river reservoir (southeast China) in 2013-2014 to examine the seasonal pattern of nutrients and phytoplankton. Limited research has been conducted to date on how disaster colonialism shapes, maintains, or destroys social organisations and relationships within indigenous societies. Legionella pneumophila is a Gram-negative, facultative intracellular pathogen and the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, a severe pneumonia in humans. Analysis of the Legionella sequenced genomes revealed a gene with a variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs), whose number varies between strains. We studied a total of 27 cases of fungal keratitis is Saudi Arabia. History of trauma was found in 9 patients, and previous use of topical steroids in 6 patients. In the majority of patients the onset of the disease was in fall and spring. The most frequent cause of fungal keratitis was found to be Aspergillus spp., and these were isolated from 11 cases (41%).
