[Radiographic interpretation of experimentally produced osseous lesions in the human mandible].

Using rotary instruments drilled bony cavities which differed in diameter and depth into a human jaw. X-rays were taken and developed employing a very precise and accurate technique to obtain high definition radiograph. From a careful study of these x-rays it was found that localized lesions in cancellous bone alone are difficult to visualize on x-rays, whereas they are easily noticeable when the cortical bone is involved.

Effect of recombinant human interleukin 2 in experimental murine coccidioidomycosis.

The therapeutic effect of recombinant human interleukin 2 (rH IL-2) was assessed in experimental murine coccidioidomycosis by daily IV injection for 30 days of doses ranging decimally from 2.5 X 10(1) to 2.5 X 10(5) units. The treatment with rH IL-2 had neither adverse nor salutary effects.

Dental pulp inflammation; experimental studies in human and monkey teeth.

Data from several studies performed during the last 15 years indicate that bacteria and their products are the main etiological factor for dental pulp inflammation. The present series of investigations was conducted in order to determine the irritating effect from various oral bacterial components and restorative measures on dental pulpal tissue and to ascertain reaction patterns of inflamed pulp tissue. The different bacterial materials were tested in an experimental model where the test substance was applied and enclosed in buccal class V cavities prepared in human or monkey teeth. The pulp

The influence of gingival stimulation on recovery from human experimental gingivitis.

The present study concerns an investigation carried out to determine the effects of gingival stimulation on the resolution of a human experimental gingivitis. 10 young male dental students participated in the experiment. Following the baseline examination (day 0), the participants were instructed to abstain from all oral hygiene procedures during a 21-day period. Heavy plaque accumulation and gingivitis developed during the 21-day induction period. On the evening of the 21st day, active oral hygiene measures were reinstitued, for an 8-day period, using 2 different methods. For the left side of

Cytomegaloviral infections in the guinea pig: experimental models for human disease.

The salivary gland virus of guinea pigs, or guinea pig cytomegalovirus (CMV), was first described in The Journal of Infectious Diseases in 1920. Early studies were concerned with the nature of intranuclear and intracytoplasmic inclusions, viral pathogenicity, transmissibility in animals, and similarity to human viral infections. Subsequently, tissue culture techniques and electron microscopy of guinea pig CMV-infected salivary gland and tissue culture cells demonstrated the morphogenesis which closely resembles that of human CMV. By use of tissue culture cocultivation techniques, generalized v

Hypertensive-diabetic cardiomyopathy in the rat: an experimental model of human disease.

The authors recently described a group of diabetic patients with severe congestive heart failure, hypertension, and minimal coronary artery disease, who had significant myocardial degeneration apparently secondary to the combined effects of high blood pressure and diabetes on the heart. To evaluate the effects of hypertension and diabetes mellitus more fully, the authors studied four groups of rats with either no disease, streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus, renovascular hypertension, or a combination of hypertension and diabetes. They employed semiquantitative light microscopy, which rev

Narrowing of glottis opening in humans associated with experimentally induced bronchoconstriction.

An index of the separation of the vocal cords during tidal breathing was obtained in humans; the area of the glottis opening was assessed from photographs of the vocal cord taken on inspiration and expiration via a fiber-optic bronchoscope. The index of glottis width was calculated from the area by dividing it with, as reference, the anteroposterior diameter of the glottis, a relatively invariant measurement of the glottis during breathing. Both inspiratory and expiratory glottis width decreased after histamine had been inhaled (dose range 2.4-9.6 mg) or injected intravenously (dose of 4 micro

Improved detection of human breast lesions following experimental training.

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of breast examination training with silicone models on the detection of lesions in natural breast tissue. Six women with a total of 13 benign breast lumps were examined by 20 trainees before and after a 20--30 minute training session or a period of unrelated activity. Following the training, percentage of correct detections, duration of examination, and reports of false positives increased. Confidence in correct detections and false positives also increased, although confidence in correct detections was greater than confidence in false positives.

Retinoic acid-binding protein in experimental and human colon tumors.

Retinoic acid-binding protein is present in metastatic murine colon tumors as well as in Lewis lung tumors and in lungs and brains of mice bearing these tumors; however, this protein is below the limits of detection in weakly-metastatic carcinomas and in normal lung, colon, or brains. These observations are interesting since they concern the possibility of measuring the binding protein levels of colon tumors in clinical specimens as biochemical markers in human malignancy. A total of thirty-three human colon tumors and related materials were analyzed for the presence of the binding protein. Th

Experimental stabilization of segmental defects in the human femur. A torsional study.

One of each of thirty-five pairs of fresh intact femora were tested to failure in torsion, recording the dynamic torque, the absorbed energy, and the angle of rotation. These results were compared with the results obtained with the contralateral femur, reconstituted after removal of a segment. Intramedullary nails with polymethylmethacrylate cement, strips of titanium mesh with cement, bone plates with and without cement, and multiple Steinmann pins with cement were the reconstituting configurations. Bone plates were the strongest configuration; the failure torques in all cases were limited by

Experimental investigation of the microstructure and mechanics of human middle cerebral arteries.

A detailed understanding of cerebral artery biomechanics is essential for advancing cerebrovascular research and neurovascular device development. Yet, despite the clinical relevance of these vessels, high-fidelity experimental data remains extremely limited. As a result, current device development is often informed by data from non-cerebral vessels or animals. To address this gap, this study characterized the mechanical behavior and structural composition of human middle cerebral arteries obtained from six donors. Ring-extension testing was used to quantify elastin- and collagen-dominant regi

Human sleep spindles track experimentally excited brain circuits.

Spindles are hallmark oscillations during non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep. Together with slow oscillations (SOs), they are thought to play a mechanistic role in the consolidation of learned information. The quantity and spatial distribution of spindles have been linked to brain activity during learning before sleep and to memory performance after sleep. If spindles are drawn to cortical areas excited through pre-sleep learning tasks, this begs the question of whether the spatial distribution of spindles is flexible, and whether their regional expression can also be manipulated with experim
