Defining the Angolan Highlands Water Tower, a 40 plus-year precipitation budget of the headwater catchments of the Okavango Delta.

Angola is a source of many major rivers in southern Africa and is referred to as the "water tower" of the region. The lack of a defined area … to River sustains the Okavango Delta during the dry season. The dynamics of seasonal precipitation, hydrology and climate change in the AHWT have important repercussions on water budgets, food security and biodiversity throughout southern Africa, requiring continued collaboration between countries to ensure that future development is sustainable.

Insights into antibiotic stewardship of lake-rivers-basin complex systems for resistance risk control.

Antibiotic stewardship is hindered by a lack of consideration for complicated environmental fate of antibiotics and their role in resistance development, while the current methodology of eco-toxicological risk assessment has not been fully protective against their potential to select for antibiotic resistance. To address this problem, we established a novel methodologic framework to perform comprehensive environmental risk assessment of antibiotics in terms of resistance development, which was based on selection effect, phenotype resistance level, heteroresistance frequency, as well as prevale

Legacy Effects of Plant Community Structure Are Manifested in Microbial Biofilm Development With Consequences for Ecosystem CO2 Emissions.

To better understand linkages between hydrology and ecosystem carbon flux in northern aquatic ecosystems, we evaluated the relationship between plant communities, biofilm development, and carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange following long-term changes in hydrology in an Alaskan fen. We quantified seasonal variation in biofilm composition and CO2 exchange in response to lowered and raised water table position (relative to a control) during years with varying levels of background dissolved organic carbon (DOC). We then used nutrient-diffusing substrates (NDS) to evaluate cause-effect relationships bet…

Assessing the role of drought in dust storm formation in the Tigris and Euphrates basin.

Drought is a common meteorological phenomenon and one of the world's most costly natural hazards. A large part of the Tigris and Euphrates basin (TEB) is located in the arid and semi-arid regions of western Asia and suffers from drought. Drought has many destructive effects on the environment and human societies, among which the formation of dust storms, is a major global challenge. This study aims to figure out the role of different types of drought on dust storm formation in the TEB. Standardized precipitation index (SPI), Tasseled Cap greenness index, and surface water area changes based on

Climate change: links to global expansion of harmful cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacteria are the Earth's oldest (∼3.5 bya) oxygen evolving organisms, and they have had major impacts on shaping our modern-day biosphere. Conversely, biospheric environmental perturbations, including nutrient enrichment and climatic changes (e.g. global warming, hydrologic changes, increased frequencies and intensities of tropical cyclones, more intense and persistent droughts), strongly affect cyanobacterial growth and bloom potentials in freshwater and marine ecosystems. We examined human and climatic controls on harmful (toxic, hypoxia-generating, food web disrupting) bloom-forming cy

A Drier Year Markedly Enhances Methane, but Not Carbon Dioxide, Emissions in a Mediterranean Reservoir.

Reservoirs are increasingly recognized as important sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs), yet the temporal scales and environmental drivers governing CO2 and CH4 flux variability remain poorly constrained. This is particularly the case for Mediterranean systems, which are subject to strong hydrological variability. Here, we present and analyze year-round, high-frequency eddy covariance measurements of CO2 and CH4 fluxes in a Mediterranean reservoir over two years with contrasting hydrological conditions, explicitly evaluating variability at diurnal, multiday, and seasonal timescales. The reservo

Drivers of barrier island water-table fluctuations and groundwater salinization.

Barrier islands are threatened by climate change as sea-level rise and higher frequency storm surge lead to more flooding and saltwater intrusion. Vegetation plays a vital role in preventing erosion of barrier islands due to aeolian and hydrological forces. However, vegetation on barrier islands is threatened by rising water tables causing hypoxic conditions and storm-surge overwash introducing saline water to the root zone. To better protect barrier island ecosystems, it is critical to identify the relative influence of different hydrological drivers on water table elevation and salinity, and

Mercury dynamics of a temperate forested wetland.

Wetlands have been identified as important sites of mercury methylation in catchments, but the range of wetland types and their geographic distribution for which methylmercury fluxes are reported in the literature are limited. Linkages among wetland hydrology, total mercury and methylmercury concentrations and fluxes, and other water quality parameters were assessed in a temperate forested swamp in Southern Ontario, Canada. Two hydrogeomorphically distinct stream reaches within the wetland exhibited differences in wetland-stream hydrologic connectivity, which strongly influenced mercury dynami…

Generalized reproduction numbers and the prediction of patterns in waterborne disease.

Understanding, predicting, and controlling outbreaks of waterborne diseases are crucial goals of public health policies, but pose challenging problems because infection patterns are influenced by spatial structure and temporal asynchrony. Although explicit spatial modeling is made possible by widespread data mapping of hydrology, transportation infrastructure, population distribution, and sanitation, the precise condition under which a waterborne disease epidemic can start in a spatially explicit setting is still lacking. Here we show that the requirement that all the local reproduction number…

Spatio-temporal characteristics of microplastics in river surface water: insights from multi-year field monitoring.

Despite the well-established role of rivers as the primary pathway for microplastics from land to sea, the effect of seasonal hydrological signals on riverine microplastic loads is still a matter of considerable controversy. This study conducted four seasonal sampling campaigns (rainy and dry seasons) over two consecutive hydrological years to clarify the spatiotemporal patterns and key drivers of microplastic occurrence in rivers from an interannual perspective. Across both hydrological years, microplastic abundance was consistently higher during the dry season (49.13 and 51.45 n/m3) than dur

Greenhouse gas emissions from freshwater wetlands of the Doon Valley, Northwest Himalaya, India.

The subtropical wetlands of the Doon Valley function as significant net sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs), with methane (CH₄) dominating the radiative forcing (∼62% of CO₂-equivalent emissions) despite lower molar fluxes than carbon dioxide (CO₂). High-resolution field measurements reveal that CH₄ emissions are primarily controlled by anaerobic conditions, sustained soil moisture, elevated temperatures, and low dissolved oxygen, whereas CO₂ fluxes exhibit greater temporal variability and respond strongly to thermal regimes and ionic strength. A key biogeoclimatic insight is the seasonal decou

Mechanisms and factors controlling greenhouse gases production in agricultural drains and ponds.

Agricultural drains and ponds are underexplored but potentially significant sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Yet, the microbial pathways responsible for CH4, CO2, and N2O production, and their responses to hydrological events, remain poorly understood. Here, we applied a multi-isotope framework (δ13C-CH4, δ13C-CO2, δ15N-N2O, δ18O-N2O, and N2O site preference) to quantify GHG production processes in agricultural drains and ponds in south-eastern Australia during rainfall and irrigation events. GHG concentrations and fluxes were consistently higher in ponds than in drains, with CH4 contributi

Characterizing the Areal Extent of PFAS Contamination in Fish Species Downgradient of AFFF Source Zones.

Most monitoring programs next to large per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) sources focus on drinking water contamination near source zones. However, less is understood about how these sources affect downgradient hydrological systems and food webs. Here, we report paired PFAS measurements in water, sediment, and aquatic biota along a hydrological gradient away from source zones contaminated by the use of legacy aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) manufactured using electrochemical fluorination. Clustering analysis indicates that the PFAS composition characteristic of AFFF is detectable in w

A comparative study of pseudo-dipole arrays and standard arrays based on the high-density DC resistivity method.

High-density direct current resistivity surveys play a crucial role in characterizing aquifer structures and groundwater contamination. However, the necessity of using multiple electrode arrays to achieve comprehensive subsurface imaging significantly prolongs field data acquisition, posing challenges to efficient hydrological investigations. This study validates an efficient approach that employs a single pseudo-dipole array to derive comprehensive datasets equivalent to those obtained from multiple standard arrays (e.g., Wenner α, β, γ). The pseudo-dipole configuration, which utilizes fixed

Climate-induced hydraulic stress and geomorphological changes: an assessment of vulnerability of critical river infrastructure in the data-scarce basin, India.

Climate non-stationarity increasingly threatens river infrastructure, yet its quantified impact on bridge pier scour in data-scarce tropical basins remains poorly constrained. The study evaluates the climate-induced modification of the river hydrology, hydraulics and channel behaviour of the data-scarce Rupnarayan river basin in the peri-urban zone of eastern India using a case study of the Kolaghat Bridge. A high-resolution model, the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model version 1.2 Higher Resolution (MPI-ESM1-2-HR), was downscaled, bias-corrected, and coupled with a Soil and Water Assessm…

Coupling machine learning and physical modelling for predicting runoff at catchment scale.

In this paper, we present an approach that combines data-driven and physical modelling for predicting the runoff occurrence and volume at catchment scale. With that aim, we first estimated the runoff volume from recorded storms aided by the Green-Ampt infiltration model. Then, we used machine learning algorithms, namely LightGBM (LGBM) and Deep Neural Network (DNN), to predict the outputs of the physical model fed on a set of atmospheric variables (relative humidity, temperature, atmospheric pressure, and wind velocity) collected before or immediately after the beginning of the storm. Results

The role of toxicological science in meeting the challenges and opportunities of hydraulic fracturing.

We briefly describe how toxicology can inform the discussion and debate of the merits of hydraulic fracturing by providing information on the potential toxicity of the chemical and physical agents associated with this process, individually and in combination. We consider upstream activities related to bringing chemical and physical agents to the site, on-site activities including drilling of wells and containment of agents injected into or produced from the well, and downstream activities including the flow/removal of hydrocarbon products and of produced water from the site. A broad variety of

Multi-sensor geospatial modelling to address complex mangrove dieback: misattribution of chemical stressors versus physical impact.

Accurately identifying the causes of mangrove dieback is essential for global coastal management, yet visually similar dieback events can result in incorrect attribution of causes. A significant mangrove dieback in Boambee Creek Estuary (2021) was initially linked to chemical contamination from nearby Coffs Harbour Airport. This study uses a forensic geospatial reconstruction to test the validity of this toxicity hypothesis against a physical-hydrological alternative. Scaling up from localised, site-specific field observations, we used multi-sensor satellite telemetry (Sentinel-2), LiDAR-based
