Insights into bioremediation of pharmaceuticals from wastewater streams: A meta-analysis of build type and organism selection.

Pharmaceuticals are widely used to manage health issues, but their release into the environment poses risks to human health and ecosystems, and most wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove them. The suite of alternative treatments (e.g. ozonation, advanced oxidation) are expensive and intensive. Bioremediation techniques using plants, algae and fungi offer practical potential for pharmaceutical removal. This meta-analysis evaluates the effectiveness of plants, algae and fungi for removing pharmaceuticals from practical wastewater treatment systems-including constructed wetlands,

Latent manganese deficiency increases transpiration in barley (Hordeum vulgare).

To investigate if latent manganese (Mn) deficiency leads to increased transpiration, barley plants were grown for 10 weeks in hydroponics with daily additions of Mn in the low nM range. The Mn-starved plants did not exhibit visual leaf symptoms of Mn deficiency, but Chl a fluorescence measurements revealed that the quantum yield efficiency of PSII (F(v)/F(m)) was reduced from 0.83 in Mn-sufficient control plants to below 0.5 in Mn-starved plants. Leaf Mn concentrations declined from 30 to 7 microg Mn g(-1) dry weight in control and Mn-starved plants, respectively. Mn-starved plants had up to f

Effect of biofertilizers on leaf yield, nitrate amount, mineral content and antioxidants of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) in a floating culture.

Hydroponics is one of the systems in agriculture which reinforce productivity by controlling environmental and growing conditions. In this study, we evaluated the effect of three bio-fertilizers, namely bacteria, micro-algae, and mycorrhiza, on basil leaf yield and quality (Ocimum basilicum L.) in a floating culture system. Soil has rich amounts of beneficial microorganisms, supporting plant nutrition, producing phytohormones, controlling phytopathogens, and improving soil structure. However, soilless culture usually contains no beneficial microorganisms if we do not include them in the system

The effect of PFOs on the uptake and translocation of emerging contaminants by crops cultivated under soil and soilless conditions.

The Mediterranean is a region of substantial agriculture production that faces concurrent environmental stresses and freshwater pollution given the occurrence of emerging contaminants (ECs). Among these pollutants, the surface-active substances have been suggested to enhance the bioavailability of other ECs. This research evaluates a comparative uptake and translocation assessment of irrigation exposure to atenolol (ATN, 60 µg/L), carbamazepine (CBZ, 60 µg/L) and triclosan (TCS, 30 µg/L) alone vs. these combined with perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS, 10 µg/L) under semifield (i.e., soil expe

Difference between selenite and selenate in selenium transformation and the regulation of cadmium accumulation in Brassica chinensis.

Se can regulate Cd accumulation and translocation in plants; however, such effects can be controversial because of the differences in plant species and Se species. In this study, pak choi was cultured under hydroponic conditions, and the effects of selenite and selenate on Cd accumulation were investigated in the edible parts of this vegetable. The results showed gradual improvements in the effects of the two Se species on the Cd content in pak choi shoots at the four assessed growing stages. Selenite did not lead to significant changes in Cd accumulation in the shoots until day 40, when it si

The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus irregularis MUCL 41833 increases the phosphorus uptake and biomass of Medicago truncatula, a benzo[a]pyrene-tolerant plant species.

The accumulation of phosphorus (P) in plants increases their biomass and resistance/tolerance to organic pollutants. Both characteristics are mandatory for the utilization of plants in phytoremediation. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi improve plant P nutrition, and thus growth. However, only a few studies have focused on the dynamics of inorganic P (Pi) uptake in AM fungal-colonized plants in the presence of organic pollutants. Indeed, most of the results so far were obtained after harvesting the plants, thus by evaluating P concentration and content at a single time point. Here, we investig

Nanogram amounts of salicylic acid produced by the rhizobacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa 7NSK2 activate the systemic acquired resistance pathway in bean.

Root colonization by specific nonpathogenic bacteria can induce a systemic resistance in plants to pathogen infections. In bean, this kind of systemic resistance can be induced by the rhizobacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa 7NSK2 and depends on the production of salicylic acid by this strain. In a model with plants grown in perlite we demonstrated that Pseudomonas aeruginosa 7NSK2-induced resistance is equivalent to the inclusion of 1 nM salicylic acid in the nutrient solution and used the latter treatment to analyze the molecular basis of this phenomenon. Hydroponic feeding of 1 nM salicylic ac

Enhanced phytoremediation of volatile environmental pollutants with transgenic trees.

Small, volatile hydrocarbons, including trichloroethylene, vinyl chloride, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, and chloroform, are common environmental pollutants that pose serious health effects. We have developed transgenic poplar (Populus tremula x Populus alba) plants with greatly increased rates of metabolism and removal of these pollutants through the overexpression of cytochrome P450 2E1, a key enzyme in the metabolism of a variety of halogenated compounds. The transgenic poplar plants exhibited increased removal rates of these pollutants from hydroponic solution. When the plants were expose

Using mass-balance principles to optimize nutrition of lettuce.

The future of agriculture depends on ever more efficient uses of fertilizer inputs. Nutrient management approaches in closed-system hydroponic culture commonly emphasize the need to continuously monitor and control ion concentrations. Here we describe and validate a mass-balance approach that uses the ratio of growth to transpiration (water use efficiency) to calculate nutrient requirements and achieve optimal nutrition without the need for individual ion monitoring. We define optimal nutrition as the minimum fertilizer input to achieve maximum growth. The hydroponic solution volume was mainta

Comparing cadmium-induced effects on the regulation of the DNA damage response and cell cycle progression between entire rosettes and individual leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana.

Cadmium (Cd) activates the DNA damage response (DDR) and inhibits the cell cycle in Arabidopsis thaliana through the transcription factor SUPPRESSOR OF GAMMA RESPONSE 1. The aim of this study was to investigate which individual leaf best reflects the Cd-induced effects on the regulation of the DDR and cell cycle progression in rosettes, enabling a more profound interpretation of the rosette data since detailed information, provided by the individual leaf responses, is lost when studying the whole rosette. Wild-type A. thaliana plants were cultivated in hydroponics and exposed to different Cd c

Effect of Fe3O4 and CuO Nanoparticles on Morphology, Genotoxicity, and miRNA Expression on Different Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Genotypes.

Metal nanoparticles (NPs) have an influence on plant growth and development. They can alter plant shoot and root length, fresh biomass production, and even influence the genome. Nanoparticles are also able to affect expression levels of plant microRNAs. MicroRNAs are able to protect plants from biotic stress, including pathogens which cause powdery mildew. In this study, Hordeum vulgare L. varieties "Marthe" and "KWS Olof" were grown in hydroponics with magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) and copper oxide (CuO) NPs added at 17, 35, and 70 mg/L. Plant morphology, genotoxicity, and expression of miR156a

Overexpression of ATP sulfurylase in Indian mustard: effects on tolerance and accumulation of twelve metals.

Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.] transgenics overexpressing ATP sulfurylase (APS plants) were shown previously to have higher levels of total thiols, S, and Se. The present study explores the effect of ATP sulfurylase overexpression on tolerance and accumulation of other metals, both oxyanions and cations, reasoning that some anions may react directly with ATP sulfurylase, while other ions may be bound by its thiol end products. The APS transgenics were compared with wild-type plants with respect to tolerance and accumulation of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, V, W, and Zn, sup

Effect of calcium application on rice ears for suppressing cesium transfer from roots to brown rice.

Researchers have stressed that crops may absorb radioactive cesium (Cs) in the soil and translocate it to its edible parts. Therefore, a method was developed to suppress Cs absorption through high K fertilisation. However, this method is less effective for rice plants after ear emergence, thus demanding the application of a suppression method at this stage. In this study, we test whether immersion of ears in a Ca solution during its ripening period could suppress the translocation of Cs from roots to brown rice. The results show that the translocation of Cs absorbed from the hydroponic solutio

Inorganic salts for suppressing powdery mildew in cucurbits--a worldwide survey.

The present review provides an update of recent progress in the use of inorganic salts to manage powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca fuliginea and Erysiphe cichoracearum) in cucurbits (Cucurbitaceae). A literature survey identified 16 salts, mainly bicarbonates (e.g. KHCO3), phosphates (e.g. K2HPO4) and silicates (e.g. Na2SiO3), as having potential to suppress powdery mildew in cucurbits. The percentage suppression compared with untreated controls was calculated from the best treatment of each of 20 peer-reviewed studies and this ranged from 41-99%. The high efficacy of inorganic salts in suppressing

Accumulation of micropollutants, byproducts, and metabolites in vegetables cultivated with treated water.

Due to a lack of water resources, people are starting to use treated wastewater to irrigate crops and vegetables. However, the risk of micropollutant exposure from vegetables cultivated with treated wastewater has been largely underestimated. To elucidate this underestimation, a hydroponic system for lettuce cultivation using a nutrient solution spiked with three pharmaceuticals with different log KOW values (acetaminophen (0.46), ketamine (2.18) and methadone (3.93)) was examined, and the total bioconcentration factors (BCFs) (including the transformation of metabolites) of the pharmaceutical

Sulfate supply enhances cadmium tolerance in Vicia faba L. plants.

Sulfur deficiency and cadmium (Cd) pollution are two ubiquitous constraints affecting plant growth in agricultural soils. However, facing the situation of sulfur deficiency, whether surplus sulfate supply can affect Cd toxicity in plants is still unclear. Therefore, in the present study, experiments with deficient, sufficient, and excess sulfate levels under Cd stress were conducted in faba bean plants hydroponically. We found that sulfate supply significantly increased biomass of Cd-stressed plants when compared with deficient sulfate treatment. Intriguingly, sulfate application also increase

Determination of the Michaelis-Menten kinetics and the genes expression involved in phyto-degradation of cyanide and ferri-cyanide.

Hydroponic experiments were conducted with different species of plants (rice, maize, soybean and willow) exposed to ferri-cyanide to investigate the half-saturation constant (K M ) and the maximal metabolic capacity (v max ) involved in phyto-assimilation. Three varieties for each testing species were collected from different origins. Measured concentrations show that the uptake rates responded biphasically to ferri-cyanide treatments by showing increases linearly at low and almost constant at high concentrations from all treatments, indicating that phyto-assimilation of ferri-cyanide followed

Role of sulfur assimilation pathway in cadmium hyperaccumulation by Sedum alfredii Hance.

Sedum alfredii Hance is a promising cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulating plant recently identified in China. However, the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying Cd accumulation, which differentiate hyperaccumulating ecotype (HE) from non-hyperaccumulating ecotype (NHE) has not been elucidated yet. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the role of sulfur assimilation pathway in Cd hyperaccumulation by the S. alfredii Hance, by analyzing gene expression pattern in sulfur assimilation pathway and the concentration of some sulfur containing compounds. The results show that, sul
