Hyperthermia is being re-evaluated and currently used in the treatment of malignant tumor. There have been numerous in vitro and in vivo experimental data presented which confirm the selective heat damage on malignant cells. This review will attempt to summarize the information on experimental and clinical reports concerning hyperthermia. The results of extracorporeally induced hyperthermia of our series are also mentioned.

The use of hyperthermia to treat malignant neoplasms is currently a "hot" issue. It has been demonstrated that heating tumour cells to 42 degrees C or above leads to their self-destruction by decreased cellular metabolism and aerobic respiration. The selective accumulation of heat in the malignant tissue at 42 degrees to 44 degrees C, compared with the temperature of normal tissue, is probably related to the different blood supply within the tumour. The historical background and the experimental and clinical results of hyperthermia are reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of the differen…

A case of malignant hyperthermia in a young girl with vesicoureteral reflux and multiple congenital abnormalities is discussed. Malignant hyperthermia is a relatively newly defined problem that is associated with anesthesia. It is being recognized with increasing frequency, particularly in children with multiple musculoskeletal anomalies. The term itself is a misnomer. It is a drug-induced syndrome of hypermetabolism that may represent an inborn error of metabolism. Recognition, prophylaxis and crisis management are reviewed, and the use of dantrolene sodium in the care of patients with malign…

There is now considerable evidence that heat can be used to destroy tumours. The metabolism of many types of cancer cell is selectively dama … iencies in our knowledge of the biophysics of heating militate against early routine application of hyperthermia in the clinic.

In some children severe hyperthermia may be the result of fever that causes cellular damage. This can be seen histologically as cell necrosis. When hyperthermia occurs with collapse or with neurological symptoms it should lead to a search for other lesions (renal, hepatic and/or coagulation disorders). Treatment of these conditions may, in some cases, lead to improvement. Simple prophylactic measures and close supervision of febrile children should prevent this serious syndrome.

A rapid rise in rectal temperature (to 45 C) in a young male Greyhound was attributed to the use of halothane and succinylcholine. Circulatory failure and death occurred within approximately 90 minutes of the onset of the hyperthermia.
