[Acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa and gastric adenocarcinoma].

INTRODUCTION: Acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa is a form of obligatorily paraneoplastic disease characterised by the recurrence of lanuga hair during adulthood. We report a case in which this hypertrichosis allowed diagnosis of gastric cancer. OBSERVATION: A 51 year-old woman was seen for hypertrichosis present for 3 months. Clinical examination led to diagnosis of acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa, which subsequently resulted in the discovery of gastric adenocarcinoma. Surgical excision of the tumour resulted in the disappearance of hypertrichosis with no recurrence during the ensuing 13 …

Unilateral generalized hypertrichosis in proteus syndrome.

A young lady was found to have hemihypertrophy, scoliosis, subcutaneous swellings, patchy dermal hypoplasia, plantar hyperplasia and macrodactyly. These suggested a diagnosis of Proteus syndrome. She was also having unilateral generalized hypertrichosis. The association of Proteus syndrome and unilateral generalized hypertrichosis has not been reported in the literature.

Localized acquired hypertrichosis following cast application.

A 11-year-old boy with transient hypertrichosis following calcaneal osteotomy and cast application for 2 months is described. We postulate that hyperemia may be responsible for his hypertrichosis, which lasted 3 months and created a cosmetic problem.

Hypertrichosis in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

We describe a 14-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) involving the skin, joints and central nervous system who developed hypertrichosis of the upper eyelashes. This clinical finding has been observed in immunocompromised patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), malnutrition, cancer or kala-azar. Although the pathogenic mechanism for this type of hypertrichosis is unknown, we believe the immunological defects seen in SLE may be responsible for such manifestation in our patient.

Hairy elbows syndrome (familial hypertrichosis cubiti).

Hairy elbows syndrome was first described by Beighton in 1970. An association with short stature has been suggested. A 5-year-old girl with the hairy elbows syndrome who is otherwise healthy is described. Her height is on the 25th centile and appropriate for her family, in which no other members are affected. The mode of inheritance of this disorder remains to be determined.

Cutaneous meningioma underlying congenital localized hypertrichosis.

A 28-year-old man had a circumscribed hypertrichotic area on the left lumbar region since birth. A biopsy specimen showed numerous normal-appearing hair follicles and arrector pili muscles. In the subcutaneous layer a mass of dense collagenous connective tissue formed the background in which ill-defined foci of meningothelial cells in nests and pseudovascular spaces were seen. Collagenous structures (pseudopsammoma bodies), some of which showed calcification (psammoma bodies), were also seen. A diagnosis of cutaneous meningioma was made.

Familial cervical hypertrichosis with underlying kyphoscoliosis.

A family with congenital localized hypertrichosis transmitted in an autosomal dominant pattern is presented. The excessive hair growth was localized to the cervical region and was associated with underlying kyphoscoliosis. No additional cutaneous or skeletal abnormalities were identified. To our knowledge these are the first cases of familial congenital cervical hypertrichosis associated with underlying kyphoscoliosis reported in the literature.

Acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa. A case report.

A 62-year-old, postmenopausal woman had rapidly appearing lanugo-type hair on her face and extremities. Adenocarcinoma of the colon was diagnosed. The patient underwent partial hemicolectomy and liver biopsy. Serum androgen levels were normal. Carcinoembryonic antigen and alpha-fetoprotein were undetected. These cases are rare, and acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa can be a clinical tumor marker.

Congenital marked hypertrichosis and Laband syndrome in a child: overlap between the gingival fibromatosis-hypertrichosis and Laband syndromes.

Gingival fibromatosis may be reported as an isolated finding or associated with a number of distinct and frequently inherited group of disorders. The characteristics of the Laband syndrome include gingival hyperplasia, dysplasia of the terminal phalanges and nails of extremities, hepatosplenomegaly and facial dysmorphism. Another well-known syndrome with gingival fibromatosis associates generalized hypertrichosis and inconstant mental retardation and epilepsy. We report a case with features of Laband syndrome and congenital marked hypertrichosis, suggesting overlap between these two genetic di…
