Nocturia independently predicts left ventricular hypertrophy and left atrial enlargement among patients with cardiac symptoms.

Nocturia can be caused by urological disorders and systemic diseases, including heart diseases. We aimed to investigate the relationship between nocturia and structural abnormalities on echocardiography. Adult patients who underwent echocardiography for cardiac symptoms or heart murmur or had a history of structural heart disease were included. The voiding times during sleep hours were collected prospectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate the predictive value of bothersome nocturia (nocturia ≥ 2) on echocardiographic abnormalities. Of 299 patients, 182 (60.9%

Differentiation between left bundle branch block and left ventricular hypertrophy: implications for cardiac resynchronization therapy.

Recent clinical trials have demonstrated that cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) reduces heart failure hospitalizations and mortality in patients with complete left bundle branch block (LBBB), but potentially not those with right bundle branch block or nonspecific LV conduction delay, such as that due to LV hypertrophy (LVH). Furthermore, endocardial mapping and simulation studies have suggested that one-third of patients diagnosed with LBBB by conventional electrocardiographic criteria are misdiagnosed, and these patients likely have a combination of LVH, LV chamber dilatation and delaye

Controlled Right Ventricular Pressure Overload Can Rescue Left Ventricular Dysfunction by Promoting Biventricular Adaptive Hypertrophy.

Pulmonary artery banding (PAB) has been investigated as a therapy for left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in pediatric dilated cardiomyopathy; however, the underlying mechanisms of action of PAB-induced LV rehabilitation remain unknown. This study aims to establish a small animal model of PAB-treated LV dysfunction to document the biventricular hemodynamic and tissue-level modifications promoted by PAB. Sprague-Dawley rats underwent left anterior descending (LAD) artery ligation (LV dysfunction model) followed by PAB 1-week post-injury (LAD + PAB, n = 13). Controls consisted of sham (n = 16), PA

Left ventricular hypertrophy, diastolic dysfunction and right ventricular load predict outcome in moderate aortic stenosis.

AIMS: Predictors of progression of moderate aortic valve stenosis (AS) are incompletely understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), diastolic dysfunction, and right ventricular (RV) load in moderate AS. METHODS AND RESULTS: Moderate AS was defined by aortic valve area (AVA), peak transvalvular velocity (Vmax) or mean pressure gradient (PGmean). A total of 131 Patients were divided into two groups according to the number of pathophysiological changes (LVH, diastolic dysfunction with increased LV filling pressures and/or RV

Interrelation Between Electrocardiographic Left Atrial Abnormality, Left Ventricular Hypertrophy, and Mortality in Participants With Hypertension.

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and left atrial abnormality (LAA) are common correlated complications of hypertension. It is unclear how common for electrocardiographic markers of LAA (ECG-LAA) to coexist with ECG-LVH and how their coexistence impacts their prognostic significance. This analysis included 4,077 participants (61.2 ± 13.0 years, 51.2% women, 48.6% whites) with hypertension from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. ECG-LVH was defined by Cornell voltage criteria. ECG-LAA was defined as deep terminal negativity of P wave in V1 >100 µV. Cox proportional haz

Effect of changes in left ventricular anatomy and conduction velocity on the QRS voltage and morphology in left ventricular hypertrophy: a model study.

UNLABELLED: The increased QRS voltage is considered to be a specific electrocardiogram (ECG) sign of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), and it is expected that the QRS voltage reflects the increase in left ventricular mass (LVM). However, the increased QRS voltage is only one of QRS patterns observed in patients with LVH. According to the solid angle theory, the resultant QRS voltage is influenced not only by spatial (anatomic) but also by nonspatial (electrophysiologic) determinants. In this study, we used a computer model to evaluate the effect of changes in anatomy and conduction velocity

Comparison of irbesartan vs felodipine in the regression after 1 year of left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertensive patients (the SILVER trial). Study of Irbesartan in Left VEntricular hypertrophy Regression.

The SILVER (Study of Irbesartan in Left VEntricular hypertrophy Regression) trial is designed to test the hypothesis that the newly developed angiontensin-II receptor antagonist, irbesartan, will produce a greater reduction in left ventricular (LV) mass than felodipine ER, in a population of hypertensive patients defined by seated diastolic blood pressure (SeDBP) in the range 95-115 mmHg or seated systolic blood pressure (SeSBP) in the range 160-200 mm Hg. A population of 360 men and women of non-childbearing potential, >18 years of age, with hypertension, newly diagnosed or after a 3-week was

Time to reconsider the way of selecting antihypertensives for hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (HTN LVH) is a highly prevalent high-risk condition, and the recommendations for HTN LVH treatment are essentially unchanged for several decades. AREAS COVERED: The current therapeutic approach to HTN LVH is to choose antihypertensive drugs according to their ability to reverse left ventricular (LV) remodeling. On the other hand, for the majority arterial hypertension (HTN) patients we should start treatment with a combination of different antihypertensive drugs. Therefore, the goal of antihypertensive treatment of HTN LVH should be adap

Age-dependent implications of left ventricular hypertrophy regression in patients with hypertension.

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in patients with hypertension. However, the effect of age on LVH regression or persistence and its differential prognostic value remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated the clinical implications of LVH regression in 1847 patients with hypertension and echocardiography data (at baseline and during antihypertensive treatment at an interval of 6-18 months) according to age. LVH was defined as a left ventricular mass index (LVMI) > 115 g/m2 and >95 g/m2 in men and women, respectively. LVH

Family History of Hypertension and Echocardiographic Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Hypertensive Nigerians.

INTRODUCTION: Studies on the relationship between a family history of hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy are sparse. We evaluated this relationship in patients with essential hypertension. METHODS: A total of 1668 patients with essential hypertension were consecutively enrolled in the prospective Federal Medical Centre Abuja Hypertension Registry. First-degree family history was defined by the presence of a known history of hypertension in any or both parents, siblings, and children. Echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy was diagnosed using the criteria of the American Soc

Chronic cold exposure causes left ventricular hypertrophy that appears to be physiological.

Exposure to winter cold causes an increase in energy demands to meet the challenge of thermoregulation. In small rodents, this increase in cardiac output leads to a profound cardiac hypertrophy, 2-3 times that typically seen with exercise training. The nature of this hypertrophy and its relevance to winter mortality remains unclear. Our goal was to characterize cold-induced cardiac hypertrophy and to assess its similarity to either exercise-induced (physiological) hypertrophy or the pathological hypertrophy of hypertension. We hypothesized that cold-induced hypertrophy will most closely resemb

Effect of the structural modification of Candesartan with Zinc on hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy.

Hypertension is the most common cause of left ventricular hypertrophy, contributing to heart failure progression. Candesartan (Cand) is an angiotensin receptor antagonist widely used for hypertension treatment. Structural modifications were previously performed by our group using Zinc (ZnCand) as a strategy for improving its pharmacological properties. The measurements showed that ZnCand exerts a stronger interaction with the angiotensin II receptor, type 1 (AT1 receptor), reducing oxidative stress and intracellular calcium flux, a mechanism implied in cell contraction. These results were acco

Prevalence of transthyretin amyloidosis in patients with heart failure and no left ventricular hypertrophy.

AimsAs evidenced by scintigraphy imaging, the prevalence of transthyretin (TTR) cardiac amyloidosis in heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) ranges between 13% and 19%. The natural evolution of cardiac amyloidosis begins with the deposition of amyloid material in the myocardium, with LVH ensuing at later stages. With current imaging modalities, it is possible to detect TTR cardiac amyloidosis before the hypertrophic stage. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of TTR cardiac amyloidosis in HFpEF patients without L

Renin, a marker for left ventricular hypertrophy, in primary aldosteronism: a cohort study.

CONTEXT: Primary aldosteronism (PA) causes left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) via hemodynamic factors and directly by aldosterone effects. Specific treatment by mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRA) or adrenalectomy (ADX) has been reported to improve LVH. However, the cardiovascular benefit could depend on plasma renin concentration (PRC) in patients on MRA. PATIENTS AND OBJECTIVE: We analyzed data from 184 patients from the Munich center of the German Conn's Registry, who underwent echocardiography at the time of diagnosis and 1 year after treatment. To assess the effect of PRC on car

Association of left ventricular hypertrophy with the level of thyroid hormone in euthyroid state.

PURPOSE: It has been demonstrated that variation in thyroid hormone levels even within normal range was associated with increased cardiovascular risk. However, available data are still insufficient on association between left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and thyroid hormone levels within euthyroid state. METHODS: In 69,298 Koreans with euthyroid function, we evaluated association between echocardiographically detected LVH and thyroid hormone levels within the normal range. Study participants were categorized into elderly (age ≥ 40) and younger (age < 40) groups, where subjects were divided i

Association of obesity phenotypes with electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy in the general population.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing evidence doubts the benign nature of metabolically healthy obesity (MHO). An investigation of the association of MHO and other obesity phenotypes with electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy (ECG-LVH), a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), can give insight into the pathophysiological basis for increased risk of CVD linked to these phenotypes. METHODS: This analysis included 3997 participants (58.7 ± 13.6 years; 51.8% women) without CVD from the NHANES-III. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III. Obesity was defined a

The importance of a shared definition of left ventricular hypertrophy: The case of obese women.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a risk factor for all-cause mortality. Left ventricular (LV) mass is usually indexed for normalizing the value to the patients phenotype and a correction by body surface area (BSA) is widely utilized being the only approved one according to the last echocardiography guidelines. However indexing LV mass by BSA may cause an underestimation of LVH prevalence in obese subjects and many authors have utilized in the obese subset of patients a correction by height2.7. The aim of our study was to quantify the number of obese patients who, despite havin
