The Yemenite deaf-blind hypopigmentation syndrome. A new oculo-dermato-auditory syndrome.

We have seen a Yemenite sister and brother with cutaneous hypomelanotic and pigmented spots and patches, microcornea, coloboma, severe hearing loss and normal karyotypes. Histopathological examinations of the skin showed absent melanocytes in the depigmented areas; in the normal and hyperpigmented skin there was abundant melanotic pigment. Similar patients have not been described previously, but there are corresponding mutations in mice and rats.

Familial spastic paraplegia, peroneal neuropathy, and crural hypopigmentation: a new neurocutaneous syndrome.

A neurocutaneous syndrome is described in which spastic paraplegia, peroneal neuropathy, and crural hypopigmentation are inherited in a dominant pattern. Spastic paraplegia becomes clinically apparent during adolescence or in childhood and progresses slowly throughout the adult years with a variability in severity of expression. Peroneal neuropathy is documented clinically and by slowing on nerve conduction studies. Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials also yield a delayed response, but brainstem auditory evoked potentials and somatosensory evoked potentials in upper and lower extremities…

The Hypopigmentation Mechanism of Tyrosinase Inhibitory Peptides Derived from Food Proteins: An Overview.

Skin hyperpigmentation resulting from excessive tyrosinase expression has long been a problem for beauty lovers, which has not yet been completely solved. Although researchers are working on finding effective tyrosinase inhibitors, most of them are restricted, due to cell mutation and cytotoxicity. Therefore, functional foods are developing rapidly for their good biocompatibility. Food-derived peptides have been proven to display excellent anti-tyrosinase activity, and the mechanisms involved mainly include inhibition of oxidation, occupation of tyrosinase's bioactive site and regulation of re

Hypopigmented lesions in pityriasis lichenoides chronica patients: Are they only post-inflammatory hypopigmentation?

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC) lesions are reported to subside with post-inflammatory hypopigmentation (PIH); hence, the most widely perceived nature of hypopigmented macules in PLC is PIH. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies describing histopathological findings in these lesions are reported in literature. The aim of this study is to evaluate the hypopigmented lesions encountered in PLC patients and to shed light on their histopathological features. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study included twenty-one patients with PLC recruited in a …

Branching hypopigmentation following intralesional corticosteroid injection: Case report and review of the literature.

Intralesional corticosteroid injections are frequently used to treat various musculoskeletal and dermatologic conditions, including keloid scarring. While a number of adverse events may be associated with these injections, hypopigmentation without atrophy is rare. We report a case of a pediatric patient with temporary cutaneous hypopigmentation without atrophy following intralesional corticosteroid injection in a keloid scar.

Clinically Interpretable Deep Learning for Differentiating Vitiligo and Postinflammatory Hypopigmentation: Diagnostic Accuracy Study.

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing vitiligo from postinflammatory hypopigmentation (PIH) is clinically challenging because both conditions may present with similar depigmented lesions. Although deep learning has shown strong potential for dermatologic image classification, limited interpretability remains a barrier to clinical adoption. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop an interpretable deep learning framework for accurate differentiation between vitiligo and PIH using a lightweight convolutional neural network and an ensemble of explainability methods. METHODS: A total of 332 clinical images (…

Autologous fat transplantation for multiple scattered steroid atrophy and hypopigmentation: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The common complications of triamcinolone acetonide injection are subcutaneous atrophy and hypopigmentation. Several therapies have been reported, including autologous fat grafting, saline injection, and various filler injections. However, severe cases of both subcutaneous atrophy and hypopigmentation occurring together are rare. In this case report, we present a successful autologous fat transplantation treatment to address multiple severe subcutaneous atrophy and hypopigmentation caused by triamcinolone acetonide injection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old woman…

Bilateral asymptomatic macular hypopigmentation in a young woman: multimodal imaging and pathogenetic hypothesis.

PURPOSE: Macular retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) hypopigmentation is a recently described very rare condition and its pathogenesis is not completely understood. We report the case of a 23-year-old female who presented with bilateral whitish, oval-shaped foveal lesions and we speculated about the possible etiopathogenetic origin. OBSERVATIONS: A 23-year-old female presented to our consideration for a routine ophthalmology visit. Visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. The fundus examination revealed a perifoveal choroidal nevus in the right eye and a bilateral yellowish, oval-shaped lesion cent…

Perifollicular Hypopigmentation in Systemic Sclerosis: Associations With Clinical Features and Internal Organ Involvement.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether perifollicular hypopigmentation in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is associated with demographics, distinct clinical features, and autoantibody profiles. METHODS: Patients with SSc were prospectively enrolled, with a standardized data form used to collect anatomic distribution of perifollicular hypopigmentation. Associations between hypopigmentation and features of SSc were assessed. RESULTS: Of 179 adult patients with SSc, 36 (20%) patients had perifollicular hypopigmentation. Of these 36 patients, 94% (n = 34) were female and 33% (n = 12) had limited cutaneous SSc…

Hypopigmentation Induced by Frequent Low-Fluence, Large-Spot-Size QS Nd:YAG Laser Treatments.

The Q-switched 1064-nm neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (QS 1064-nm Nd:YAG) laser is increasingly used for nonablative skin rejuvenation or "laser toning" for melasma. Multiple and frequent low-fluence, large-spot-size treatments are used to achieve laser toning, and these treatments are associated with the development of macular hypopigmentation as a complication. We present a case series of three patients who developed guttate hypomelanotic macules on the face after receiving laser toning treatment with QS 1064-nm Nd:YAG.

Erythema Multiforme-like Secondary to Paraphenylenediamine Due to Henna Tattoo Plus Residual Hypopigmentation.

Temporary henna tattoos or pseudotattoos have become increasingly widespread among children and adolescent. A generalized skin reaction, type erythema multiforme-like reaction is unusual, and rarely reported. We describe the case of a 7-year-old boy who reported erythematous papular bull's-eye shaped lesions and consolidated edema primarily in the upper and lower extremities. These lesions were compatibles with erythema multiforme-like reaction. He also showed an erythematous-eczematous lesion on his leg, shaped like a dolphin. In this area, a temporary henna tattoo was painted 1-month earlier

Spatially restricted hypopigmentation associated with an Ednrbs-modifying locus on mouse chromosome 10.

We have used the varied expressivity of white spotting (hypopigmentation) observed in intrasubspecific crosses of Ednrb(s) mice (Mayer Ednrb(s)/Ednrb(s) and C3HeB/FeJ Ednrb(s)/Ednrb(s)) to analyze the effects of modifier loci on the patterning of hypopigmentation. We have confirmed that an Ednrb(s) modifier locus is present on mouse Chromosome 10. This locus is now termed k10, using the nomenclature established by Dunn in 1920. The k10(Mayer) allele is a recessive modifier that accounts for almost all of the genetic variance of dorsal hypopigmentation. Using intercross analyses we identified a…

Hyper- and Hypopigmentation in a Subject with Fitzpatrick Skin Phototype VI: A New Treatment Option.

Background: Laser therapies can cause hyper- and hypopigmentation of the skin. There is little evidence in the literature of effective treatments for these types of problems in Fitzpatrick skin phototypes IV-VI. The main aim of this retrospective study is to evaluate the effects of a new therapy that combines the application of electromagnetic fields and vacuum on a subject with Fitzpatrick skin phototype VI, who presented extensive, laser-induced facial dyschromia. The secondary aim is to test the effectiveness of a free imaging software for assessing skin pigmentation. Methods: The level of …
