Transsexuals are concerned with being accepted in straight society, that is, "passing" successfully. Ninety-one undergraduates were shown a videotaped discussion of interracial dating by five heterosexual biological females and one cross-dressed male transsexual. Experimental subjects, who had been previously informed of the presence of the transsexual, were all able to identify her, significantly more than control subjects who had not been given this set. Ratings were obtained on eight personal attributes of the transsexual and the five biological females prior to the subjects' attempts to id

Because extreme boyhood femininity is often a precursor of adult transsexualism, transvestism, and homosexuality, the author recommends early intervention for boys who meet specific behavioral criteria of gender disturbance. It is necessary to involve the parents in such treatment and to deal with the resistances they may have to recognizing and working on the problem as well as problems within the marital relationship that may affect the child's behavior. These boys are remarkably responsive to treatment given between the ages of 5 and 12, becoming more masculine in behavior and more comforta

One aspect of the grief process which is frequently mentioned in the literature on mourning but has not yet received adequate clinical attention is the tendency for the bereaved to assume symptoms and behavior of the deceased. This paper presents evidence that pathologic identificantion 1) is an important clinical syndrome that is frequently misdiagnosed and mistreated, 2) defines a population at high medical and surgical risk, 3) can be diagnosed by history alone, and 4) carries a good prognosis when identified and properly managed. Four of a series of ten clinical cases are presented and dis

This study examines the development of disability identity in Japan’s disability community. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three Japanese participants with physical disabilities who had active interaction with others with disabilities. The interview transcription was analyzed using the KJ method and the Trajectory Equifinality Model developed in Japan. The analysis showed that the participants coped with a sense of isolation from society and experienced dilemmas about their invisible disabilities. They broadened their views from personal to general disability issues at several

INTRODUCTION: Auditory hallucinations occur in schizophrenia and also in the general population. However, evidence points to differences in the nature and the mechanisms of clinical and non-clinical hallucinations, challenging the dominant assumption that they represent the same phenomenon. The current study extended this evidence by examining voice identity perception in hallucination-prone individuals. In schizophrenia, deficiencies discriminating between real (external) voices have been linked to basic acoustic cues, but voice discrimination has not yet been investigated in non-clinical hal

Seven genotypic female (46,XX) patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia, four reared as girls and three reared as boys were evaluated at 16-26 years of age with psychological interviews and testing. A small penis in the three young men produced a practical and psychological barrier that severely injured their personality. In spite of some degree of pre-adolescent tomboyism and a somewhat injured body image, the girls adjusted to their feminine gender identity. It is concluded that in cases of both early and late diagnosis, the genotypic female sex should be preferred.

The reported 68%-86% overall success rates for sex reassignment surgery must be viewed cautiously; the lack of long-term follow-up studies makes these statistics misleading. There is evidence suggesting that some gender dysphoric patients benefit primarily from sex reassignment surgery. Most such patients, however, are secondary transsexuals who can benefit from various modes of psychotherapy. Sex reassignment surgery should only be considered as the last resort for a highly select group of diagnosed gender dysphoric patients. As physicians learn new ways to diagnose and treat transsexualism,

Thirty-four women with bulimia nervosa and 34 women without bulimarexic symptoms (but matched for age, weight, deviance from ideal weight, and educational status) were compared as to how liberated their attitude towards the woman's role in society (= their sex role attitude, SRA) and their actual own behavior as females (= their sex role behavior, SRB) were. The degree to which their general attitude towards sex role and their own sex role behavior differed from each other was also investigated. Experimental and control group were also compared concerning their sex role related locus of contro

Global majority youth face disproportionate psychosocial stressors and heightened exposure to community violence. Resilience is a key protective factor, and hyper-local sport programs may support its development through culturally responsive mentorship, family and community co-ownership, and psychologically safe spaces. This study explored how such programs in London, UK, may support resilience and perceived community safety among global majority youth. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis and a multi-stakeholder approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 38 respondents

Social identity theory was applied in group therapy for adults with mild mental retardation. Social identity theory suggests that social group membership, also called collective identity, has an impact on self-esteem. Individuals will try to maintain self-esteem by viewing their social groups positively. This may not be possible for individuals who are members of a stigmatized group. However, it may be possible to enhance self-esteem by broadening one's awareness of collective identity. Furthermore, being able to positively view other individuals who are co-members of one's own stigmatized gro

A case of asphyxia of a young man suffering from "Identity Disorder" as delineated by the DSM-III-R (American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders revised in 1987) is reported. The patient jumped into the drum of a garbage truck and the iron roller in the drum asphyxiated him by compression. In addition to the presentation of this rare category of the DSM-III-R disorders as an autopsy case and an unusual means of asphyxia, we briefly reviewed other autopsy cases of the patients with mental disorders who died in Japan between 1988 and 1992.

In a group of 85 female chronic alcoholics and other addicts, scores on the Raven's Matrices and on a multiple-choice version of WAIS Vocabulary were found unrelated to the 13 standard and 4 MMPI research scales and 3 MMPI indices (average profile elevation, average elevations of the neurotic and the psychotic triad) except for the relationship of the raw scores (r = -.32) and the IQ equivalents (r = -.30) on the Vocabulary test to Masculinity-Femininity scores and of IQ equivalents on the Matrices to Barron's Ego Strength scale (r = .32): Women with more extensive vocabulary scored lower on t
