Immunity status against poliomyelitis in persons 13-14 years old living in Rome.

The immunity against poliomyelitis in 1000 subjects 13-14 years old was evaluated. Neutralizing antibodies against poliovirus type 1, 2 and 3 were detected in 97.6%, 95.8% and 70% of samples, respectively. 3/1000 (0.3%) subjects were simultaneously seronegative to the three types. WHO does not suggest a protective level of International Units (IU), but our data indicate that such level is 0.45 IU for polio type 1, 0.65 IU for the type 2 and 0.138 for the type 3. A booster dose of vaccine in adolescence to ensure personal and herd immunity is recommended.

Impact of HPV immunization on the detection of cervical disease.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary cause of cervical cancer and genital warts. The development of HPV vaccines has been a major advance in the prevention of these diseases. Recent studies have shown promising early effects of HPV immunization programs on cervical abnormalities and genital warts, with evidence of herd immunity against genital warts also emerging in Australia. Further studies are required to not only continue monitoring the effect of the HPV immunization on the incidence of these diseases, but also to establish the effect the immunization will have on cervical screening p

Comprehensive Spatial-Temporal and Risk Factor Insights for Optimizing Livestock Anthrax Vaccination Strategies in Karnataka, India.

Anthrax, a zoonotic disease affecting both livestock and humans globally, is caused by Bacillus anthracis. The objectives of this study were the following: (1) to identify environmental risk factors for anthrax and use this information to develop an improved predictive risk map, and (2) to estimate spatial variation in basic reproduction number (Ro) and herd immunity threshold at the village level, which can be used to optimize vaccination policies within high-risk regions. Based on the anthrax incidences from 2000-2023 and vaccine administration figures between 2008 and 2022 in Karnataka, thi

Comparison of static and dynamic models of maternal immunization to prevent infant pertussis in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: This paper compares cost-effectiveness results from two models of maternal immunization to prevent pertussis in infants in Brazil, one static, one dynamic, to explore when static models are adequate for public health decisions and when the extra effort required by dynamic models is worthwhile. METHODS: We defined two scenarios to explore key differences between static and dynamic models, herd immunity and time horizon. Scenario 1 evaluates the incremental cost/DALY of maternal acellular pertussis (aP) immunization as routine infant vaccination coverage ranges from low/moderate up

Disruption of Epidemic Patterns in Community-Acquired Respiratory Infections Post-Covid-19 in France: A 5-Year Analysis Using the French Pediatric and Ambulatory Research of Infectious Diseases Network.

After the lifting of the nonpharmaceutical interventions introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Enterovirus reappeared 16 months after COVID-19 onset; bronchiolitis, 33 months; group A Streptococcus infections, 36 months; pneumonia, 45 months and pertussis, 51 months. These differences across pathogens shed light on differences in herd immunity durability and pathogen-specific vulnerability.

Estimating vaccination threshold and impact in the 2017-2019 hepatitis A virus outbreak among persons experiencing homelessness or who use drugs in Louisville, Kentucky, United States.

BACKGROUND: Between September 2017 and June 2019, an outbreak of hepatitis A virus (HAV) occurred in Louisville, Kentucky, resulting in 501 cases and 6 deaths, predominantly among persons who experience homelessness or who use drugs (PEH/PWUD). The critical vaccination threshold (Vc) required to achieve herd immunity in this population is unknown. We investigated Vc and vaccination impact using epidemic modeling. METHODS: To determine which population subgroups had high infection risks, we employed a technique based on comparing the proportion of cases arising before and after the epidemic pe

Serological Assessment of Enzootic Status and Associated Risk Factors for Cattle Tick Fever in Herds from Paraíba State, Northeast Brazil.

Cattle tick fever (CTF) is the most important tick-borne disease complex affecting cattle production in tropical and subtropical regions. This study evaluated the enzootic status of CTF in cattle herds from two contrasting climatic regions of Paraíba State, Northeast Brazil, and identified epidemiological factors associated with herd immune status. A cross-sectional serological survey was conducted in 32 cattle herds from two contrasting climatic regions of Paraíba State. All herds were tested for Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina, whereas 28 herds (14 per region) were evaluated for A. margin

High endemic levels of typhoid fever in rural areas of Ghana may stem from optimal voluntary vaccination behaviour.

Typhoid fever has long established itself endemically in rural Ghana despite the availability of cheap and effective vaccines. We used a game-theoretic model to investigate whether the low vaccination coverage in Ghana could be attributed to rational human behaviour. We adopted a version of an epidemiological model of typhoid fever dynamics, which accounted not only for chronic life-long carriers but also for a short-cycle transmission in the immediate environment and a long-cycle transmission via contamination of the water supply. We calibrated the model parameters based on the known incidenc

Coupling Vector-host Dynamics with Weather Geography and Mitigation Measures to Model Rift Valley Fever in Africa.

We present and characterize a multi-host epidemic model of Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus in East Africa with geographic spread on a network, rule-based mitigation measures, and mosquito infection and population dynamics. Susceptible populations are depleted by disease and vaccination and are replenished with the birth of new animals. We observe that the severity of the epidemics is strongly correlated with the duration of the rainy season and that even severe epidemics are abruptly terminated when the rain stops. Because naturally acquired herd immunity is established, total mortality across 2

Mass vaccination: when and why.

With increased demand for smallpox vaccination during the nineteenth century, vaccination days--early mass vaccination campaigns--were conducted over time-limited periods to rapidly and efficiently protect maximum numbers of susceptible persons. Two centuries later, the challenge to rapidly and efficiently protect populations by mass vaccintion continues, despite the strengthening of routine immunization services in many countries through the Expanded Programme on Immunization strategies and GAVI support. Perhaps the most widely accepted reason for mass vaccination is to rapidly increase popul

Estimation of the within-herd transmission rates of bovine viral diarrhoea virus in extensively grazed beef cattle herds.

Many research groups have developed mathematical models to simulate the dynamics of BVDV infections in cattle herds. However, most models use estimates for within-herd BVDV transmission rates that are either based on expert opinion or adapted from other dairy herd simulation models presented in the literature. There is currently little information on the transmission rates for BVDV in extensively grazed beef herds partly due to the logistical challenges in obtaining longitudinal data of individual animal's seroconversion, and it may not be appropriate to apply the same transmission rates from

A New Wave of Vaccines for Non-Communicable Diseases: What Are the Regulatory Challenges?

Vaccines represent one of the greatest achievements of medicine, dramatically reducing the incidence of serious or life-threatening infectious diseases and allowing people to live longer, healthier lives. As life expectancy has increased, however, the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and diabetes has increased. This shifting burden of disease has heightened the already urgent need for therapies that treat or prevent NCDs, a need that is now being met with increased efforts to develop NCD vaccines. Like traditional vaccines, NCD vaccines

Measles-induced encephalitis.

Encephalitis is the most frequent neurological complication of measles virus infection. This review examines the pathophysiology of measles infection and the presentations, diagnosis and treatment of the four types of measles-induced encephalitis including primary measles encephalitis, acute post-measles encephalitis, measles inclusion body encephalitis and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. The early symptoms of encephalitis may be non-specific and can be mistakenly attributed to a systemic infection leading to a delay in diagnosis. This review provides a summary of the symptoms that should

Application of a fast and cost-effective 'three-in-one' MMR ELISA as a tool for surveying anti-MMR humoral immunity: the Hungarian experience.

In Hungary, between February 2017 and July 2019, 70 confirmed measles cases were reported, raising questions about the adequacy of population-level immunity. Although the assumed vaccination coverage is ≥99%, in a recent study, we detected potential gaps in the anti-measles humoral immunity. In Hungary, according to a decree by the Ministry of Public Welfare, beginning from 2021, the healthcare provider should conduct a serosurvey of anti-measles protection levels of healthcare professionals. To facilitate the compliance with this requirement, we developed a quick 'three-in-one' or 'triple' MM

A model of the spread of the bovine viral-diarrhoea virus within a dairy herd.

Wet BVDSim (a stochastic simulation model) was developed to study the dynamics of the spread of the bovine viral-diarrhoea virus (BVDV) within a dairy herd. This model took into account herd-management factors (common in several countries), which influence BVDV spread. BVDSim was designed as a discrete-entity and discrete-event simulation model. It relied on two processes defined at the individual-animal level, with interactions. The first process was a semi-Markov process and modelled the herd structure and dynamics (demography, herd management). The second process was a Markov process and mo

Yellow fever vaccination coverage among nomadic populations in the Savannah Region, Ghana: a cross-sectional study following an outbreak.

INTRODUCTION: Yellow fever (YF) remains a major public health concern in Ghana, with periodic outbreaks despite ongoing vaccination efforts. Nomadic populations, due to their mobility and remote settlements, are often underserved by vaccination campaigns, posing challenges to achieving herd immunity. The objective of the study was to estimate yellow fever vaccination coverage among nomadic populations in the Savannah Region of Ghana and compare it with the national average, and identify reasons for non-vaccination to inform future outbreak response strategies. METHODS: a community-based cross

Mathematical Modeling of Endemic Cholera Transmission.

Mathematical modeling can be used to project the impact of mass vaccination on cholera transmission. Here, we discuss 2 examples for which indirect protection from mass vaccination needs to be considered. In the first, we show that nonvaccinees can be protected by mass vaccination campaigns. This additional benefit of indirect protection improves the cost-effectiveness of mass vaccination. In the second, we model the use of mass vaccination to eliminate cholera. In this case, a high population level of immunity, including contributions from infection and vaccination, is required to reach the "
