Bacterial eye infections associated with sexual transmission infections: A review.

The objective of this work was to collect updated information on Treponema pallidum, Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, causing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and etiological agents of eye infections, to provide relevant information on this public health problem. For this, a bibliographic review was carried out using different electronic databases such as: PubMed central, google academic, Lilacs, Scopus, Science Direct and Scielo, between March 2009 and August 2019. According to the WHO, more than a million people a day contract a sexually transmitted infection. For T. pa…

Intra-Abdominal Infections: Prevalence and Risk Factors of ESBLs Infections.

BACKGROUND: Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs)-producing bacteria are increasing challenge in the treatment of both community acquired and nosocomial intra-abdominal infections (IAIs). Investigating the characteristics ofpatients with the IAIs caused by ESBL-producing bacteria and assessing the risk factors of ESBLs infection will lead to appropriate therapeutic management. OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence of ESBL-producing bacteria in IAIs in Phramongkutklao Hospital and identify risk factor of the ESBL-infections. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We performed a retrospective cross sectional s…

[Localized bacterial skin infections and dermatologic manifestations of systemic infections].

Localized bacterial skin infections are frequent. In furunculosis, a local treatment is usually sufficient. In case of frequent recurrence a possible staphylococcus aureus colonization should be looked for and eliminated. Erysipela is treated by systemic antibiotics in order to avoid complications such as streptococcal gangrena or parainfectious glomerulonephritis. Anaerobic cellulitis and gas gangrena are postoperative or posttraumatic infections of the soft tissues which require a combined surgical and antibiotic treatment. Systemic infections may be recognized by characteristic skin lesions…

Bacterial infections of the skin. I: primary and secondary infections.

Bacterial skin infections are important to recognize because we have the means to eradicate almost all of them. Primary skin infections are mainly caused by staphylococci or streptococci. Staphylococci infections present as furuncles and carbuncles, superficial folliculitis, impetigo or rarely the Scalded Skin Syndrome. Streptococcal infections present as impetigo, ecthyma, erysipelas or cellulitis. Corynebacteria causes erythrasma, trichomycosis or pitted keratolysis. Gram-negative primary skin infections, although uncommon, may occur; bacterial cultures are generally necessary for diagnosis.…

Doripenem in hospital infections: a focus on nosocomial pneumonia, complicated intra-abdominal infections, and complicated urinary tract infections.

Doripenem is the latest carbapenem on the market to date. Although not an antibiotic in a new class, it offers a glimmer of hope in combating serious infections secondary to multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria when we have not seen a new class of antibacterial, particularly for Gram-negative bacteria, for more than 10 years. In vitro, doripenem exhibits a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and Amp-C β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae and anaerobes. Doripenem also exhibits better in vitro activ…

Circumcision related to urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections, human immunodeficiency virus infections, and penile and cervical cancer.

Male circumcision has been carried out as a prophylactic measure against future diseases, as well as a rite of passage due to religious practice and definite medical indication. The present review discusses the benefits of male circumcision on the prevention of urinary tract infections, and the importance of circumcision in congenital urinary system anomalies, such as vesicoureteral reflux. Additionally the present review examines the associations between circumcision and sexually transmitted infections, including human immunodeficiency virus, and the preventive effect of circumcision on penil…

[Lacrimal duct infections].

In addition to being a drainage system, the lacrimal ducts actively defend the eye through the action of the lacrimal pump, the presence of resident flora (lacriome) and the mucosa-associated immune tissue. Infection occurs when mucosal immune functions are overwhelmed. Lacrimal infection is a vicious circle, in which infection leads to inflammation and post-inflammatory sequelae, themselves a source of occlusion and stagnation, which in turn encourages infection. Whatever the initial trigger - post-traumatic occlusion, inflammation (e.g. allergic) or infestation by a virulent germ, the manage

Pleural Space Infections.

Pleural space infections have been a well-recognized clinical syndrome for over 4000 years and continue to cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, our collective understanding of the causative pathophysiology has greatly expanded over the last few decades, as have our treatment options. The aim of this paper is to review recent updates in our understanding of this troublesome disease and to provide updates on established and emerging treatment modalities for patients suffering from pleural space infections. With that, we present a review and discussion synthesizing the re…

[Update bone infections].

Bone and joint infections are becoming of great concern in an elderly population with growing numbers of prosthetic joints and comorbidities. This paper summarizes recently published literature on periprosthetic joint infections, vertebral osteomyelitis and diabetic foot infections. According to a new study, in the presence of a hematogenous periprosthetic infection and other inserted joint prostheses that are unremarkable on clinical examination, further invasive or imaging diagnostics may not be necessary. Periprosthetic infections that occur late (> 3 months after joint installation) have a…

Salmonella Bloodstream Infections.

Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen of both animals and humans. This bacterium is responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality world-wide. Different serovars of this genus cause diseases ranging from self-limiting gastroenteritis to a potentially fatal systemic disease known as enteric fever. Gastrointestinal infections with Salmonella are usually self-limiting and rarely require medical intervention. Bloodstream infections, on the other hand, are often fatal even with hospitalization. This review describes the routes and underlying mechanisms of the extraintestinal dissemination …

Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Infections.

Mycobacterial species other than Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae constitute nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). NTM infections are on the rise, particularly in the Western world. They cause a wide range of pulmonary and systemic manifestations. The 2 most common types are as follows: classical cavitary type, seen with preexisting lung disease, and the nonclassical bronchiectatic type, seen in elderly women without preexisting lung disease. Disseminated infections by the hematogenous route are common in immunocompromised patients including those with HIV. Imaging plays a key …

Intra-abdominal Infections.

Intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) are a common cause of sepsis, and frequently occur in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. IAIs include many diagnoses, including peritonitis, cholangitis, diverticulitis, pancreatitis, abdominal abscess, intestinal perforation, abdominal trauma, and pelvic inflammatory disease. IAIs are the second most common cause of infectious morbidity and mortality in the ICU after pneumonia. IAIs are also the second most common cause of sepsis in critically ill patients, and affect approximately 5% of ICU patients. Mortality with IAI in ICU patients ranges from 5 to 50%, …

[Soft tissue infections].

Acute skin and soft tissue infections are among the most frequent infections in medicine. There is a broad spectrum including simple local infections as well as severe and life-threatening diseases. Along with Staphylococcus aureus, group A Streptococci are mainly responsible for these illnesses. The therapeutic approach ranges from antiseptic local treatments to administering systemic antibiotics or emergency surgery. Treating physicians often face challenges when presented with soft tissue infections due to a great discrepancy between the first impression of the disease compared to a possibl…

Infections and glaucoma.

Glaucoma is an intraocular pressure-related ophthalmic disease with multiple causes that results in an optic neuropathy and vision loss. Intraocular pressure elevation is among its strongest risk factors. While glaucoma is mostly primary in etiology, secondary glaucoma is not infrequent. Recognizing its cause is imperative, since treatment is often different depending on the pathophysiologic mechanism. Numerous clinically relevant ophthalmic infections can result in robust inflammatory responses that may result in pressure elevation or intraocular anatomic configurations that predispose to pre…

Tick-Borne Infections.

There are many tick-borne infections that affect children and adolescents in the United States. These illnesses often begin with non-specific flulike symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, and myalgia, so obtaining a good travel history is important. Most people do not even realize that they were bitten by a tick, so identification of the specific tick is not necessary. Often, treatment should commence before formal illness identification, as delays may cause more severe disease, and rapid laboratory confirmation is difficult. One of the most important issues is prevention of tick bites wit…
