Relationship between Undescended Testis Position and Prevalence of Testicular Appendices, Epididymal Anomalies, and Patency of Processus Vaginalis.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the incidence of testicular appendices (Tas), epididymal anomalies (EAs), and processus vaginalis (PV) patency in patients with undescended testis (UT) according to testicular position and to compare them with human fetuses. METHODS: We studied 85 patients (108 testes) with cryptorchidism and compared the features with those of 15 fetuses (30 testes) with scrotal testes. We analyzed the relationships among the testis and epididymis, patency of PV, and the presence of TAs. We used the Chi-square test for statistical analysis (p < 0.05). RESULTS: In 108 UT, 72 (66.66%) ha

[A Role of the Basal Ganglia in Processing of Complex Sounds and Auditory Attention].

A hypothetical mechanism is suggested for processing of complex sounds and auditory attention in parallel neuronal loops including various auditory cortical areas connected with parts of the medial geniculate body, inferior colliculus and basal ganglia. Release of dopamine in the striatum promotes bidirectional modulation of strong and weak inputs from the neocortex to striatal neurons giving rise to direct and indirect pathways through the basal ganglia. Subsequent synergistic disinhibition of one and inhibition of other groups of thalamic neurons by the basal ganglia result in the creation o

Effects of furosemide on cochlear neural activity, central hyperactivity and behavioural tinnitus after cochlear trauma in guinea pig.

Cochlear trauma causes increased spontaneous activity (hyperactivity) to develop in central auditory structures, and this has been suggested as a neural substrate for tinnitus. Using a guinea pig model we have previously demonstrated that for some time after cochlear trauma, central hyperactivity is dependent on peripheral afferent drive and only later becomes generated intrinsically within central structures. Furosemide, a loop diuretic, reduces spontaneous firing of auditory afferents. We investigated in our guinea pig model the efficacy of furosemide in reducing 1) spontaneous firing of aud

Tonotopic reorganization and spontaneous firing in inferior colliculus during both short and long recovery periods after noise overexposure.

BACKGROUND: Noise induced injury of the cochlea causes shifts in activation thresholds and changes of frequency response in the inferior colliculus (IC). Noise overexposure also induces pathological changes in the cochlea, and is highly correlated to hearing loss. However, the underlying mechanism has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we hypothesized that overexposure to noise induces substantial electrophysiological changes in the IC of guinea pigs. RESULTS: During the noise exposure experiment, the animals were undergoing a bilateral exposure to noise. Additionally, various techniqu

Resting neural activity patterns in auditory brainstem and midbrain in conductive hearing loss.

CONCLUSIONS: Conductive hearing loss (CHL) lowers resting neural activity patterns in the auditory periphery. Such reductions of peripheral auditory activity may influence the developing central brain during early postnatal years when the system is still highly plastic. OBJECTIVES: A common cause of CHL in young children is otitis media; if chronic and/or episodic there may be a risk to speech and language development. In this clinical context we have investigated changes in neural activity patterns in the brainstem and midbrain in an animal model of CHL. METHODS: In a mouse model, a 50-60 d

Retuning of inferior colliculus neurons following spiral ganglion lesions: a single-neuron model of converging inputs.

Lesions of spiral ganglion cells, representing a restricted sector of the auditory nerve array, produce immediate changes in the frequency tuning of inferior colliculus (IC) neurons. There is a loss of excitation at the lesion frequencies, yet responses to adjacent frequencies remain intact and new regions of activity appear. This leads to immediate changes in tuning and in tonotopic progression. Similar effects are seen after different methods of peripheral damage and in auditory neurons in other nuclei. The mechanisms that underlie these postlesion changes are unknown, but the acute effects

Duration and peak level as co-factors in hearing loss from exposure to impact noise.

The Equal Energy Hypothesis (EEH) is based on the assumption that hearing loss from a given exposure is proportional to the total energy of the exposure. A corollary of this assumption is the power of the exposure and the duration of the exposure are interchangeable. Studies of impulse and impact noise show that hearing loss does not follow the prediction of the EEH (Ward, 1986; Danielson et al., 1991). Thus, the following experiments were designed to assess the relative importance of the duration and peak level of impact noise in the production of hearing loss. Monaural chinchillas served as

A Golgi study of the medial geniculate body in the tree shrew (Tupaia glis).

The subdivisions of the medial geniculate body in Tupaia recognized in previous connectional and cytoarchitectural studies are identified in Golgi-impregnated material. They may be distinguished by the organization of the neuropil, especially the dendrites, and, in many cases, by differences in the neurons. The ventral nucleus contains tufted cells with disc-shaped dendritic fields which are aligned to form laminae. The caudomarginal and deep dorsal nuclei have less tufted, less precisely arranged cells with longer, thin appendages. Neurons in the suprageniculate and dorsal nuclei are similar

Microseconds-level coding of echo delay in the auditory brainstem of an FM-echolocating bat.

Echolocating big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) detect changes in ultrasonic echo delay with an acuity as sharp as 1 µs or less. How this perceptual feat is accomplished in the nervous system remains unresolved. Here, we examined the precision of latency registration (latency jitter) in neural population responses as a possible mechanism underlying the bat's hyperacuity. We recorded local field potentials in the cochlear nucleus and inferior colliculus of anesthetized big brown bats to sequences of sounds consisting of a simulated frequency-modulated broadcast followed, at various echo delays,

Impaired Subcortical Processing of Amplitude-Modulated Tones in Mice Deficient for Cacna2d3, a Risk Gene for Autism Spectrum Disorders in Humans.

Temporal processing of complex sounds is a fundamental and complex task in hearing and a prerequisite for processing and understanding vocalization, speech, and prosody. Here, we studied response properties of neurons in the inferior colliculus (IC) in mice lacking Cacna2d3, a risk gene for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The α2δ3 auxiliary Ca2+ channel subunit encoded by Cacna2d3 is essential for proper function of glutamatergic synapses in the auditory brainstem. Recent evidence has shown that much of auditory feature extraction is performed in the auditory brainstem and IC, including proc

Comparison of Responses to DCN vs. VCN Stimulation in a Mouse Model of the Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI).

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is an auditory neuroprosthesis that provides hearing to deaf patients by electrically stimulating the cochlear nucleus (CN) of the brainstem. Whether such stimulation activates one or the other of the CN's two major subdivisions is not known. Here, we demonstrate clear response differences from the stimulation of the dorsal (D) vs. ventral (V) subdivisions of the CN in a mouse model of the ABI with a surface-stimulating electrode array. For the DCN, low levels of stimulation evoked multiunit responses in the inferior colliculus (IC) that were unimodally dis

Temporal acuity is preserved in the auditory midbrain of aged mice.

Impaired temporal resolution of the central auditory system has long been suggested to contribute to speech understanding deficits in the elderly. However, it has been difficult to differentiate between direct age-related central deficits and indirect effects of confounding peripheral age-related hearing loss on temporal resolution. To differentiate this, we measured temporal acuity in the inferior colliculus (IC) of aged CBA/J and C57BL/6 mice, as a model of aging with and without concomitant hearing loss. We used two common measures of auditory temporal processing: gap detection as a measure

Auditory central gain compensates for changes in cochlear output after prolonged low-level noise exposure.

Remarkably, the central auditory system can modify the strength of its sound-evoked neural response based on prior acoustic experiences, a phenomenon referred to as central gain. Gain changes are well documented following traumatic noise exposure, but much less is known about central gain dynamics following prolonged exposure to low-level noise, a common acoustic experience in many urban and work environments. We recently reported that the neural output of the cochlea is reduced, while gain was enhanced in the inferior colliculus (IC) following a 5-week exposure to 75 dB noise. To determine if

Downregulation of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor ζ1 subunit (GluN1) gene in inferior colliculus with aging.

Presbycusis is the impairment of auditory function associated with aging, which stems from peripheral cochlear lesions and degeneration of the central auditory process. The effect of age-induced peripheral hearing loss on the central auditory process is not fully understood. C57Bl/6 (C57) mice present accelerated peripheral hearing loss, which is well developed by middle-age and mimics the human presbycusis pattern. The aim of this study was to elucidate the molecular effects of peripheral hearing loss in the inferior colliculus (IC) with age between young and middle-aged C57 mice using cDNA m
