INTRODUCTION: Intrauterine contraceptive devices may at times perforate and migrate to adjacent organs. Such uterine perforation usually passes unnoticed with development of potentially serious complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old woman of North Indian origin presented with an acute tender lump in the right iliac fossa. The lump was initially thought to be an appendicular lump and treated conservatively. Resolution of the lump was incomplete. On exploratory laparotomy, a hard suspicious mass was found in the anterior abdominal wall of the right iliac fossa. Wide excision and bisect

Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD) when placed in the uterine cavity is used for contraception or treatment of intrauterine adhesion, but it has become a cause of unintended bladder stone due to wrongful placement or migration. It may cause blood in urine and painful urination. Pelvic ultrasound and X-ray were used to make the diagnosis of the bladder stone with the embedded IUCD, which was removed by open vesicolithotomy through a Pfannenstiel suprapubic incision. Cases such as this are highly preventable if post procedure and routine annual pelvic ultrasonography are emphasized as stan

Bladder stones occasionally develop due to foreign body in the bladder. A 45-year-old woman, who had had an intrauterine contraceptive device inserted 10 years earlier, presented with dysuria, frequency and voiding difficulty with suprapubic pain. The intrauterine device was found in the bladder with stone formation and was removed by cystoscopic procedure.

AIM: The present case report describes colon injury subsequent to uterine penetration which is associated with the use of an intrauterine device (IUD).
CASE: A 29-year-old multiparous woman, who presented with vague abdominal pain, had a TCu 380A inserted at her postpartum third month visit. The T-shaped segment of the IUD was found to be lodged within the lumen of a colon segment which was 60 cm far from the ileocecal valve. The vertical copper-bearing limb of the IUD extruded from the colon wall beyond the mesenteric edge and partially penetrated the fundal wall. After the affected colon se

BACKGROUND: Recent-onset chronic pelvic pain thought to originate from an intraomental Dalkon Shield intrauterine device (IUD) (A. H. Robbins, Inc., Richmond, Virginia) that had remained asymptomatic for over 30 years is unusual. Case reports and patient series suggest that intraomental IUDs remain asymptomatic for long periods of time and are usually not associated with chronic pelvic pain.
CASE: A 49-year-old woman with an unrecollected history of Dalkon Shield placement 30 years earlier was evaluated after 6 months of pelvic pain. A negative workup and failure of conservative management pr

Five cases of cervical perforation have been observed in women with a Copper-T IUCD, over a period of 5 yr. In all cases, the distal end of the stem (vertical limb) of the T had perforated through the cervical wall into one of the fornices of the vagina. Only 2 cases had symptoms leading to the discovery of the device, while the other 3 were discovered accidentally or on routine examination.

RATIONALE: Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) are recommended as a means of contraception. Translocation of IUD is a rare and serious complication. Colonic inflammatory mass caused by translocated IUD initially misdiagnosed as a colonic polyp is extremely rare and has not been reported yet.
PATIENT CONCERNS: This report presents a case of sigmoid colon translocation of intrauterine device on a 37-year-old female patient. Colonoscopy was performed due to her complain of repeated blood in stools and subsequently the patient was misdiagnosed as a sigmoid colon polyp. Nonetheless, the "pol

RATIONALE: Rectal foreign bodies are not an uncommon finding in outpatient departments globally. Most such objects are inserted through the anus. Occasionally, a foreign body may be ingested and may successfully pass through the entire gastrointestinal tract and be held up in the rectum. In extremely rare cases, foreign bodies in adjacent tissues or organs can penetrate the rectal wall and enter the rectal lumen. We report a rare case that the IUCD had migrated and was embedded in the rectal wall. A part of the IUCD was loosened and deformed into a metallic wire that protruded through the anus

Over a 6 year period, 67 women had a translocated intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) removed from the peritoneal cavity or uterovesical fold under general anaesthesia. In 40 patients removal of the IUCD at laparoscopy succeeded, whereas in 24 laparotomy proved necessary and three IUCD were removed per vaginam. Compared with the inert plastic device a larger proportion of copper-containing IUCD in the peritoneal cavity required laparotomy for removal, however, 44% could be removed by laparoscopy, the less traumatic procedure.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To describe and demonstrate a technique for laparoscopic removal of a perforating intrauterine device (IUD) during pregnancy, and to provide tips to facilitate safe laparoscopic surgery during pregnancy.
DESIGN: Video presentation of the technique for laparoscopic removal of a perforating IUD in a pregnant woman.
SETTING: Department of Neuroscience, Reproductive Sciences, and Dentistry, University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy.
INTERVENTION: A 30-year-old woman, gravida 3, para 2, with a copper T IUD (Nova T 380; Bayer, Leverkusen, Germany) perforating the left adne

Objective: We investigated the effectiveness of removing lost intrauterine devices (IUDs) that had been in place for over 10 years, using Lin's biopsy grasper in an office setting. Methods:This single-centre, retrospective study conducted between March 2006 and June 2018 included 49 women who had had an IUD in place for contraception for more than 10 years and who underwent removal of the lost IUD using Lin's biopsy grasper under transabdominal sonography without use of a tenaculum, anaesthesia and analgesia, after dilation of the cervical os and hysteroscopy. Results: The women's median age w

AIM: This study was designed to evaluate feasibility and effectiveness of hysteroscopic intervention in the management of symptoms related to the displaced levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and thirteen patients with displaced LNG-IUS presenting with irregular uterine bleeding, pelvic pain or asymptomatic displacement were recruited for hysteroscopic examination. Displaced LNG-IUS was relocated by hysteroscopic intervention and the effect on symptoms and LNG-IUS position was followed.
RESULTS: The displaced LNG-IUS was successfully relo

CASE: Although many complications have been reported with intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs), vesicovaginal fistula with secondary vaginal stones is rare. We report the case of a 46-year-old woman who presented with a vaginal discharge lasting 2 months. Two years previously, she had undergone cystoscopic lithotripsy and surgery to remove an IUD, after pelvic radiography had revealed a fractured Chinese stainless steel ring IUD with secondary vesical stones that had been the cause of her urinary tract symptoms. When she again complained of vaginal discharge, vaginal stones and a vesicova
