Experiments with young Japanese quail were conducted to determine whether combined moderate deficiencies of zinc, iron and copper would cause greater uptake and tissue retention of cadmium than the single deficiencies. Birds were fed the experimental diets containing 62 ppb cadmium from hatching to 16 days of age. On day 9 each bird received a dose of 109CdCl2 in its diet. On day 10, the duodenal and jejunal-ileal tissues contained large amounts of cadmium, and there were many significant effects of treatment on cadmium-109 retention in the livers and kidneys. At day 16, zinc deficiency caused

Micronutrient deficiency persists throughout the world, and although the burden is higher in low-resource settings, it is also prevalent in wealthy countries, a phenomenon termed 'hidden hunger'. Due to their high requirements for vitamins and minerals relative to their energy intake, young women and children are particularly vulnerable to hidden hunger. As they share several risk factors and impact on overlapping outcomes, we consider how deficiency of iron, iodine and vitamin D can have profound impacts on perinatal health and infant development. We review the epidemiology of these micronutr

Copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and iodine/thyroid hormone (TH) deficiencies lead to similar defects in late brain development, suggesting that these micronutrient deficiencies share a common mechanism contributing to the observed derangements. Previous studies in rodents (postweanling and adult) and humans (adolescent and adult) indicate that Cu and Fe deficiencies affect the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, leading to altered TH status. Importantly, however, relationships between Fe and Cu deficiencies and thyroidal status have not been assessed in the most vulnerable population, the developing

OBJECTIVES: To study the prevalence of iron and vitamin deficiencies, endocrine disorders and immunological parameters in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (1 degree SS).
DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: At the time of the establishment of the diagnosis of 1 degree SS in 43 consecutive patients, a clinical examination including haematological analyses was performed. The patients' medical records were also reviewed.
SETTING: Patients referred for diagnosis to The University Hospital, Linköping, a secondary or tertiary referral hospital serving the middle part of southern Sweden.
RESULTS: In total

BACKGROUND: To compare the effectiveness and safety of intravenous iron (VI) formulations used to treat iron deficiency in children.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study included patients aged 0-21 years who received IVI with low molecular weight iron dextran (LMWID), iron sucrose, ferric gluconate, or ferric carboxymaltose (FCM). Demographics, number of doses per treatment course, underlying diagnoses, pre- and post-treatment hemoglobin (Hgb) and ferritin levels, adverse effects, and post-FCM phosphorous levels were collected. Changes in Hgb and ferritin were statistically analyzed for com

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency is a common condition, especially among patients with kidney and heart failure and inflammatory bowel disease. Intravenous iron is the preferred method of treatment in these patients, but it usually requires prolonged iron polymaltose infusions or multiple administrations of alternative preparations. The aim of the study was to confirm the safety and patient acceptance of ultrarapid iron polymaltose infusions as an alternative to slower treatments and ferric carboxymaltose.
METHOD: An open-label, phase 4 safety study was conducted at a tertiary hospital, with con

Iron is a crucial element in the human body. Endometrial iron metabolism is implicated in endometrium receptivity and embryo implantation. Disturbances of the maternal as well as the endometrial iron homeostasis, such as iron deficiency, can contribute to the reduced development of the fetus and could cause an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Fractalkine is a unique chemokine that plays a role in the communication between the mother and the fetus. It has been demonstrated that FKN is involved in the development of endometrial receptivity and embryo implantation, and it functions a

A broad spectrum of diseases can cause anemia and thrombocytopenia. Some of these diseases are a hematological emergency; others are benign diseases, so early and accurate diagnosis is crucial in managing such patients. Usually, IDA is associated with thrombocytosis or normal platelets; however, in rare cases, IDA can be associated with thrombocytopenia; even though, thrombocytopenia that occurs with IDA responds to iron therapy. Iron therapy rarely causes transient thrombocytopenia per se. We are reporting an African female patient who is found to have thrombocytopenia secondary to iron defic

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies, and has a number of physiological manifestations. Early, or non-anaemic iron deficiency can result in fatigue and diminished exercise capacity. Oral iron preparations have a high incidence of intolerable side effects, and are ineffective in certain forms of iron deficiency. Consequently, intravenous iron preparations are increasingly used in the treatment of non-anaemic iron deficiency. The newer, more stable iron preparations in particular purport to have a lower incidence of side effects, and are now used across

Iron deficiency anaemia is a major public health problem in pregnancy. About 58% of pregnant women in developed countries are anaemic mainly due to iron deficiency resulting a serious negative consequences on children, mothers and eventually on the nation. This quasi-experimental multi centered study (Before after study) was done to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of Iron Polymaltose Complex (IPC) in the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia and it was performed at the OPD of Bangladesh Medical College and two other clinics of Dhaka city from August 2011 to September 2013. A total of 80

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the efficacy of iron supplementation in anemic pregnant women on the basis of occurrence of pregnancy complications and birth outcomes.
METHODS: Comparison of the occurrence of medically recorded pregnancy complications and birth outcomes in pregnant women affected with medically recorded iron deficiency anemia and iron supplementation who had malformed fetuses/newborns (cases) and who delivered healthy babies (controls) in the population-based Hungarian Case-Control Surveillance System of Congenital Abnormalities.
RESULTS: Of 22,843 cases with congenital abnormalities

Two hundred and forty one patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) were identified in a single institution over a 24-year period; of these, 75 individuals were studied as the result of persistent IDA despite the administration of oral iron hydroxide polymatose (IP). The levels of hemoglobin when the patients were referred for study after being given oral IP had a median of 10.3 g/dl; after administration of oral iron fumarate during periods ranging from 1 to 14 months, the levels of hemoglobin rose to a median of 12.5 g/dl (p>0.01). Our data support previous observations made in other countr

Iron supplementation is a public health strategy designed for the prevention of iron deficiency and its consecutive anemia. It should be targeted, safe, flexible, long term and ideally, community based under the supervision of the health sector. It must be differentiated from iron therapy, even though, in the intermediate and long term it corrects mild-moderate deficiency of iron and ferropenic anemia. It should complement other measures for the control of iron deficiency. A summary of results comparing daily and intermittent iron supplementation (every 3-days in rats, and weekly in humans) is
