Construction of a hydrogeochemical conceptual model and identification of the groundwater pollution contribution rate in a pyrite mining area.

To effectively restore the groundwater environment of the Shiping Mine (SPM) area, which is contaminated by acid mine drainage (AMD), a hydrogeochemical conceptual model was constructed based on groundwater chemistry and environmental stable isotopes. The contribution rate of various pollution sources in the groundwater environment was quantitatively analyzed using an optimized stable isotope mass balance model. A total of 68 groups of water samples were collected. The sampling period covered the dry, intermediate, and wet periods of a complete hydrological year. Samples were taken from rain,

Solution speciation controls mercury isotope fractionation of Hg(II) sorption to goethite.

The application of Hg isotope signatures as tracers for environmental Hg cycling requires the determination of isotope fractionation factors and mechanisms for individual processes. Here, we investigated Hg isotope fractionation of Hg(II) sorption to goethite in batch systems under different experimental conditions. We observed a mass-dependent enrichment of light Hg isotopes on the goethite surface relative to dissolved Hg (ε(202)Hg of -0.30‰ to -0.44‰) which was independent of the pH, chloride and sulfate concentration, type of surface complex, and equilibration time. Based on previous theor

Microbial life in deep-seated selenide veins reflected by extreme δ34S fractionation of framboidal pyrite.

Microbial life can be found in the continental subsurface down to depths of several kilometers, where it may affect mineral-forming and reaction processes. Sulfur isotopes provide an important tool for discriminating between deep microbial activity and abiotic processes. Here, we report the sulfur isotopic composition (δ34S) of pyrite in selenide-rich domains of hematite-carbonate ± selenide veins hosted in black shales from Tilkerode, Harz Mountains (Germany). Framboidal pyrite (PyII) occurs in voids in clausthalite (PbSe) formed by hematite and carbonate dissolution, but is also enclosed in

Lower Non-Heme Iron Absorption in Healthy Females from Single Meals with Texturized Fava Bean Protein Compared to Beef and Cod Protein Meals: Two Single-Blinded Randomized Trials.

Meat analogs based on plant protein extracts are rising in popularity as meat consumption declines. A dietary shift away from meat, which has a high iron bioavailability, may have a negative effect on the amount of iron absorbed from the diet. Iron absorption from legumes cultivated in regions not suitable for soy production, such as fava bean, has not yet been explored. The aim of this study was to evaluate non-heme iron absorption from a meal with texturized fava bean protein compared to beef and cod protein meals. The study included two single-blinded iron isotope trials in healthy Swedish

Electrochemical reduction of unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds via 3d transition-metal catalysis.

Electrochemical reduction has emerged as a powerful alternative to conventional hydrogenation for unsaturated C-C bonds, enabling precise control without molecular hydrogen or stoichiometric reductants. This review summarizes recent advances in iron-, cobalt-, and nickel-catalyzed electroreduction of alkynes and alkenes, highlighting how electrochemical parameters and catalyst design unlock distinct, controllable reaction manifolds that are inaccessible under thermochemical conditions. These developments position 3d metal electrocatalysis as a versatile and programmable platform for selective

Improved mass spectrometry assay for plasma hepcidin: detection and characterization of a novel hepcidin isoform.

Mass spectrometry (MS)-based assays for the quantification of the iron regulatory hormone hepcidin are pivotal to discriminate between the bioactive 25-amino acid form that can effectively block the sole iron transporter ferroportin and other naturally occurring smaller isoforms without a known role in iron metabolism. Here we describe the design, validation and use of a novel stable hepcidin-25(+40) isotope as internal standard for quantification. Importantly, the relative large mass shift of 40 Da makes this isotope also suitable for easy-to-use medium resolution linear time-of-flight (TOF)

Iron transfer between the purple phosphatase uteroferrin and transferrin and its possible role in iron metabolism of the fetal pig.

Uteroferrin, a purple-colored, iron-containing phosphatase which is induced by progesterone in the porcine uterus, has been proposed to be an intermediary in iron transfer between the mother and conceptus in the pig. Along with a number of other uterine proteins of maternal origin, it accumulates in the allantoic fluid during mid-pregnancy. When [59Fe]uteroferrin was introduced into the allantoic sacs of five fetuses at Day 60 of pregnancy, its iron was transferred to another protein, identified as transferrin. The half-life of iron loss from uteroferrin was approximately 24 h and the kinetics

The carotid body as a neuroendocrine organ involved in control of erythropoiesis.

The carotid body is generally regarded solely as a chemoreceptor. This paper presents evidence that the carotid body is also an endocrine gland, secreting one or more erythropoiesis-controlling hormones. Its removal is followed by anemia and by a lack of reticulocyte response to daily bleeding. The removal of both carotid bodies results in a reduction of the high reticulocyte count induced by daily bleeding (5-40% of erythrocytes) down to 0.1% of erythrocytes. The injection of an extract of the carotid body causes reticulocytosis within 5 hr. This reticulocytosis attains its peak 48-72 hr afte

Natural Abiotic Iron-Oxido-Mediated Formation of C1 and C2 Compounds from Environmentally Important Methyl-Substituted Substrates.

Organic and inorganic volatile compounds containing one carbon atom (C1), such as carbon dioxide, methane, methanol, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, and chloromethane, are ubiquitous in the environment, are key components in global carbon cycling, play an important role in atmospheric physics and chemistry, e.g., as greenhouse gases, destroy stratospheric and tropospheric ozone, and control the atmospheric oxidation capacity. Up to now, most C1 compounds in the environment were associated with complex metabolic and enzymatic pathways in organisms or to combustion processes of organic matter. We

Influence of the dietary contribution of terrestrial insects to the condition factor of bleak Alburnus alburnus in a highly polluted lowland river.

Bleak Alburnus alburnus is a highly abundant but understudied fish species, and we know little about the trophic ecology of populations inhabiting rivers in central Europe. From an ecosystem perspective, this fish species is interesting as it is known to feed on surface insects, thereby linking the terrestrial with the aquatic habitat. In a previous study, we demonstrated that this flux is intensified, and dietary contribution of terrestrial insects is higher in fish inhabiting sections of the Spree River, Germany, that are polluted from iron oxides occurring from former lignite mining activit

Combined chemical and microbiological degradation of tetrachloroethene during the application of Carbo-Iron at a contaminated field site.

After the injection of Carbo-Iron® into an aquifer contaminated with tetrachloroethene (PCE), combined chemical and microbiological contaminant degradation processes were found in a long-term study of the field site in Lower Saxony (Germany). The applied composite material Carbo-Iron, which consists of colloidal activated carbon and embedded nanoscale zero-valent iron (ZVI) structures, functioned as intended: accumulating the pollutants and promoting their reductive dechlorination. Furthermore, the particles decreased the redox potential of the groundwater due to their reaction with oxygen and

Design and validation of a high-throughput matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry method for quantification of hepcidin in human plasma.

Disorders of iron metabolism affect over a billion people worldwide. The circulating peptide hormone hepcidin, the central regulator of iron distribution in mammals, holds great diagnostic potential for an array of iron-associated disorders, including iron loading (β-thalassemia), iron overload (hereditary hemochromatosis), and iron deficiency diseases. We describe a novel high-throughput matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry assay for quantification of hepcidin in human plasma. This assay involves enrichment using a functionalized MALDI chip,
