Enteric fever decreased in Israel in the last 50 years, but its current epidemiology is unknown. In a nationwide study, we evaluated all cases of enteric fever from 1995 to 2003. On hundred thirty-six cases met the case definition. During the period studied, the incidence of enteric fever decreased from 0.42 to 0.23/100,000. A total of 57.4% of the cases were acquired abroad. Communication disorders in Israel is a well-established professional field, requiring academic training and dual certification in speech pathology and audiology. Entry level is a BA in communication disorders (comparable to a MA degree in the USA) and 1 year of work under supervision. It is possible to continue studies towards higher degrees (MA and PhD). We face the same problems as in the rest of the world with need for trained professionals in the social services and the need to deal with multilingual and multicultural issues.

We have performed molecular and mutation analyses on 14 unrelated Israeli Hunter families and have identified the IDS mutation in 8 of them. Three unrelated Ashkenazi patients had the same previously reported mutation (1246 C-->T). Based on the haplotypes of the mutation-bearing chromosomes, we concluded that this is a recurrent mutation. In two patients, we identified a deletion spanning exons V-VII. Three novel mutations were observed in different patients: L410P, 717de14, and 244de13. In addition, the silent mutation (562 C-->T) was observed in one patient.

Trends in the epidemiology of infections due to Shigella species over a period of 6 years (1986-1991) in Israel were studied by analysis of the results of 51,300 stool cultures, of which 2,987 yielded Shigella species. We report the design and results of the first Israeli multicenter screening program for colorectal neoplasia. The screening protocol comprised a risk questionnaire, fecal occult blood testing, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is relatively common in Jews. Three HLA antigens were significantly more frequent in 39 Israeli Jewish PV patients than in controls A26 - 59% vs 20%; Bw38 - 61% vs 20%; and DRw4 - 90% vs 38%. We attempted to identify all cases with polymyositis and/or dermatomyositis (PM-DM) admitted to hospitals in Israel during 1960-76. The diagnosis of PM-DM was retrospectively confirmed in 86 Jewish patients. The age-adjusted incidence rates increased from 1.30 in 1960-64 to 2.57 in 1970-74, with an overall incidence of 2.18 new cases diagnosed annually per 10(6) population.
