Epilepsy is a relatively common maternal complication affecting 0.3-0.5% of pregnant women. For most mothers with epilepsy, the use of antiepileptic drugs (AED) is unavoidable, even during pregnancy and lactation. Therefore, the fetus is indirectly exposed to AED via the placenta and breast milk. AED are also prescribed for female patients with other diseases, such as bipolar disorders. In clinical settings, physicians are frequently questioned whether or not women patients taking AED should breast-feed their offspring. Thus, it is necessary to establish an optimum AED regimen for women taking

State of lactation system during oncological disorders of thyroid gland is one of the poorly studied topics of modern medicine. Controversy in clinical and experimental data creates the need of performing studies in this direction. The goal of this study is to investigate determining pathogenic mechanisms of thyroid and lactation systems. Realization of the study results will enable development of guidelines for prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatment of mammary gland cancer in patients with thyroid gland malignancy. For this purpose we investigated patients with different types of malignant canc

Anxiety disorders in the peripartum period are common and frequently overlooked. They can present de novo or as exacerbations of generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder, or posttraumatic stress disorder. Calculating a score on the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale is a useful method of screening for these disorders while also screening for perinatal depression. Treatment includes psychotherapy, specifically cognitive behavioral therapy, and antidepressants, the choice of which should be balanced between the severity of symptoms

Metabolic diseases in cows have a significant influence on their health status, milk production, and the health and immune parameters of newborn calves. One of the most critical periods in the lactation cycle of dairy cows is the transition period, which covers the last three weeks before and the first three weeks after calving. It is characterized by the occurrence of metabolic and endocrine adaptations resulting from the increased demand for nutrients to support future lactation and avoid metabolic dysfunction. Metabolic stress is a hypermetabolic and catabolic response to homeostatic imbala

All breast disorders found during pregnancy and lactation should be carefully evaluated. Most of them are benign, but it is essential to exclude pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC), which is too often diagnosed late. The first-line imaging technique is ultrasound (US), which must be completed by mammography if there is any clinical or US suspicious sign . In lactating patients with PABC , breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be useful for local assessment.Management depends on the precise analysis and BI-RADS classification of the lesion. During pregnancy and lactation, there is a

Milk from cows treated with antibiotics for mastitis and other disorders has been fed to young calves in fresh or fermented form. Growth of calves so fed has been similar to that of control animals offered fermented colostrum or other liquid feeds. Incidence of health disorders in mastitis milk-fed calves has been no greater than in those fed control milks. Mastitic milk preserved by addition of propionic acid or formaldehyde was relatively unpalatable to the calves. Limited data indicate that first-lactation cows fed mastitic milk as calves suffered no more udder trouble than did their mates

The progression from gestation into lactation represents the transition period, and it is accompanied by marked physiological, metabolic, and inflammatory adjustments. The entire lactation and a cow's opportunity to have an additional lactation are heavily dependent on how successfully she adapts during the periparturient period. Additionally, a disproportionate amount of health care and culling occurs early following parturition. Thus, lactation maladaptation has been a heavily researched area of dairy science for more than 50 yr. It was traditionally thought that excessive adipose tissue mob

The transition from pregnancy to lactation puts significant, sudden demands on maternal energy and calcium reserves. Although most mammals are able to effectively manage these metabolic adaptations, the lactating dairy cow is acutely susceptible to transition-related disorders because of the high amounts of milk being produced. Hypocalcemia is a common metabolic disorder that occurs at the onset of lactation. Hypocalcemia is also known to result in poor animal welfare conditions. In addition, cows that develop hypocalcemia are more susceptible to a host of other negative health outcomes. Diffe

There is evidence that severe malnutrition started during gestation and continued through lactation affects adversely the morphologic development of the neocortex leading to increased neuronal cell packing density and decreased dendritic branching. Nevertheless, the effect of purely mild protein prenatal malnutrition on neocortical development remains rather unexplored. This study evaluates the effects of mild protein prenatal malnutrition (8% casein diet, calorically compensated by carbohydrates) and subsequent postnatal nutritional rehabilitation (25% casein diet) on: (i) the potassium-induc

Ketosis is one of the most prevalent metabolic disorders in dairy herds, with significant economic and welfare implications. However, existing literature often examines risk predictors in isolation, and their interactions and dependencies remain poorly understood. This study investigated how production, health, and management factors - and their interactions - are associated with ketosis risk (KR) at the animal level in German dairy cows, with a focus on German Holstein (GH) and German Simmental (SIM) breeds. Data from 76,809 cows across 717 German dairy farms collected between 2015 and 2019 w

Overweight and obesity have become a frequent phenomenon among pregnant women during last thirty years. They result in increased morbidity rates of different chronic, health- or even life-threatening diseases. Among different perinatal complications associated with obesity the most important are: hypertension, diabetes, varices, cholecystolithiasis, prolonged pregnancy, intrauterine growth retardation. Increased rates of operative deliveries, intrapartal and postpartal infections, thrombotic complications, anaemia, urinary infections and lactation disorders can be observed.

Accurate measurement of cerebral lactate is critical to the understanding of brain function for psychiatric disorders such as panic disorder and bipolar disorder as well as mitochondrial dysfunction. Proton magnetic spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) techniques can be used to study lactate in vivo; however, accurate measurement of cerebral lactate, which is normally at low basal abundance, can be challenging. In this study, regional lactate measurements obtained with two different MRSI analytic approaches were evaluated using proton echo-planar spectroscopic imaging (PEPSI) data from 18 healthy adul

This European expert consensus statement provides recommendations for the diagnosis and management of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), chronic hypoparathyroidism in adults (HypoPT), and parathyroid disorders in relation to pregnancy and lactation. Specified areas of interest and unmet needs identified by experts at the second ESE Educational Program of Parathyroid Disorders (PARAT) in 2019, were discussed during two virtual workshops in 2021, and subsequently developed by working groups with interest in the specified areas. PHPT is a common endocrine disease. However, its differential diagn

The thyroid gland requires iodine to synthesize thyroid hormones, and iodine deficiency results in the inadequate production of thyroxine and related thyroid, metabolic, developmental, and reproductive disorders. Iodine requirements are higher in infants, children, and during pregnancy and lactation than in adult men and non-pregnant women. Iodine is available in a wide range of foods and water and is susceptible to almost complete gastric and duodenal absorption as an iodide ion. A healthy diet usually provides a daily iodine consumption not exceeding 50% of the recommended intake. Iodine sup

At the onset of lactation, high-producing dairy cows commonly face a negative energy balance and metabolic disorders, such as hyperketonemia. Blood concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), BHB, cholesterol, glucose, and urea provide valuable information about the metabolic, health, and nutritional status of lactating cows. Milk mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy has been successfully used for the prediction of several health traits in the last years, including blood metabolite concentrations, even though the model accuracy is moderate. In fact, MIR-predicted blood parameters are useful

BACKGROUND: Maternal metabolic syndrome during gestation and lactation leads to several Se-status-related metabolic changes in offspring. MS leads to hepatomegaly, liver oxidation, resistance to insulin challenges and selenoptroteins expression upregulation, producing an energy imbalance in hepatocytes. As Se is necessary for correct heart function, Se deposits are depleted and selenoproteins expression downregulated in heart; this depletion being related to cardiovascular damage. Recently, selenoproteins have been directly implicated in the central endocrine regulation of appetite and energy
