Slovotvir: Grassroots reform of the Ukrainian language reveals the role of drift and selection in language change.

Language change involves a complex interplay of selection and drift (or unbiased copying), shaping the popularity of words over time. This pre-registered study examines lexical evolution in the Ukrainian language using data from Slovotvir, a crowdsourcing platform where over 4,000 users proposed and ranked translations of foreign-origin words over 9 years. We rely on an agent-based model combined with novel generative inference methods to investigate the roles of frequency-dependent selection, selection for brevity, and random drift in shaping word popularity. Our results indicate that Slovotv…

Emotional factor matters in language learning? A meta-analysis of emotional intelligence on language achievement.

Emotional intelligence (EI) has garnered sustained theoretical and empirical attention over recent decades. Within the domain of linguistics, a growing body of research has investigated the relationship between EI and language achievement. Publication trends in this area reveal two distinct phases: a period of lukewarm attention (2009-2017), followed by a phase of rapid growth (2018-present). The present meta-analysis aims to determine whether EI significantly influences language achievement. Drawing on data from 47 independent studies, comprising 63 effect sizes and a total sample of 18,649 p…

Better language through chemistry: Augmenting speech-language therapy with pharmacotherapy in the treatment of aphasia.

Speech and language therapy is the standard treatment of aphasia. However, many individuals have barriers in seeking this measure of extensive rehabilitation treatment. Investigating ways to augment therapy is key to improving poststroke language outcomes for all patients with aphasia, and pharmacotherapies provide one such potential solution. Although no medications are currently approved for the treatment of aphasia by the United States Food and Drug Administration, numerous candidate mechanisms for pharmaceutical manipulation continue to be identified based on our evolving understanding of …

Engagement of Language and Domain General Networks during Word Monitoring in a Native and Unknown Language.

Functional neuroimaging studies have highlighted the roles of three networks in processing language, all of which are typically left-lateralized: a ventral stream involved in semantics, a dorsal stream involved in phonology and speech production, and a more dorsal "multiple demand" network involved in many effortful tasks. As lateralization in all networks may be affected by life factors such as age, literacy, education, and brain pathology, we sought to develop a task paradigm with which to investigate the engagement of these networks, including manipulations to selectively emphasize semantic…

Working Memory and Linguistic Performance of Dual Language Learners With and Without Developmental Language Disorders.

Purpose This research note describes the use of working memory measures as potential indicators of developmental language disorders (DLD) in preschool-age dual language learners from Spanish-speaking backgrounds. This report is an extension of early work, completed by the same authors that described the diagnostic accuracy of a Spanish nonword repetition task. Method One hundred thirty Spanish-speaking families with preschool-age children participated; 37 children had DLD, and 93 were typically developing. Families were recruited from early childhood programs in three states in the western reg…

Receptive and productive speech and language abilities in hearing-impaired children with German as a second language.

OBJECTIVES: Many studies examining early bilingualism in migrant populations focus on the development of the first language. As language acquisition is closely related to the hearing development, there is a critical need to investigate language development in hearing-impaired children being raised bilingually who were fitted with cochlear implants and/or hearing aids. Therefore, this research project aimed to study the linguistic development of hearing-impaired children being raised with German as a second language who were provided with hearing aids or cochlear implants. Further, the language…

Influence of speech-language therapy on P300 outcome in patients with language disorders: a meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The patient's evolution in the audiology and speech-language clinic acts as a motivator of the therapeutic process, contributing to patient adherence to the treatment and allowing the therapist to review and/or maintain their clinical therapeutic conducts. Electrophysiological measures, such as the P300 evoked potential, help in the evaluation, understanding and monitoring of human communication disorders, thus facilitating the prognosis definition in each case. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the audiology and speech-language therapy influences the variation of P300 latency and…

A dual architecture for the cognitive control of language: Evidence from functional imaging and language production.

The relation between language processing and the cognitive control of thought and action is a widely debated issue in cognitive neuroscience. While recent research suggests a modular separation between a 'language system' for meaningful linguistic processing and a 'multiple-demand system' for cognitive control, other findings point to more integrated perspectives in which controlled language processing emerges from a division of labor between (parts of) the language system and (parts of) the multiple-demand system. We test here a dual approach to the cognitive control of language predicated on…

Language and culture in speech-language and hearing professions in South Africa: The dangers of a single story.

Speech-language and hearing (SLH) professions in South Africa are facing significant challenges in the provision of clinical services to patients with communication disorders from a context that is culturally and linguistically diverse because of historic exclusions of black and African language speaking candidates in higher education training programmes. Over 20 years post the democratic dispensation, minimal changes have been noted in terms of the training, research as well as clinical service provision in these professions, although the demographic profile of students is seen to be transfor…

Predictors of Language Gains Among School-Age Children With Language Impairment in the Public Schools.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify child-level characteristics that predict gains in language skills for children with language impairment who were receiving therapy within the public schools. The therapy provided represented business-as-usual speech/language treatment provided by speech-language pathologists in the public schools. METHOD: The sample included 272 kindergartners and first-graders with language impairment who participated in a larger study titled "Speech-Therapy Experiences in the Public Schools." Multilevel regression analyses were applied to examine the extent to which sel…

Language disorders subsequent to left cerebellar lesions: a case for bilateral cerebellar involvement in language?

BACKGROUND: Crossed cerebello-cerebral diaschisis, reflecting a functional depression of supratentorial language areas due to reduced input via cerebello-cortical pathways, may represent the neuropathological mechanism responsible for language deficits associated with cerebellar pathology. Although it has been proposed that language is lateralized to the right cerebellar hemisphere, recent clinical and neuroimaging studies suggest that the cerebellum may bilaterally influence the regulation of language, with the left cerebellar hemisphere also contributing to the mediation of language via ipsi…

Is dyslexia a form of specific language impairment? A comparison of dyslexic and language impaired children as adolescents.

Two groups of adolescents with a childhood history of language impairment were compared with a group of developmentally dyslexic young people of the same age and nonverbal ability. The study also included two comparison groups of typically developing children, one of the same age as those in the clinical groups, and a younger comparison group of similar reading level to the dyslexic students. Tests of spoken and written language skills revealed that the adolescents with dyslexia were indistinguishable from those with resolved language impairments on spoken language tasks, and both groups perfo…

Right Brain: Language Without Speech.

During a neurology rotation as a second-year internal medicine resident, I encountered a preschool-aged child whose absence of spontaneous speech initially framed my clinical thinking. Although she did not answer direct questions, she demonstrated an unexpected facility with written language, reading words from books with ease and engaging with the world through visual and textual cues. Over subsequent encounters, I witnessed the gradual evolution of her communication and the adjustments made by her mother, whose daily life had become shaped by therapies, routines, and the uncertainties surrou…

Language outcomes after cochlear implant.

QUESTION: A young infant seen in our practice was diagnosed with profound congenital hearing loss. Their parents want to pursue cochlear implant surgery for their child, but they are concerned about language acquisition before and after the surgery. What should they know about the procedure, and how can they improve language outcomes? ANSWER: Congenital hearing loss is often identified on newborn screening hearing tests. Cochlear implants may lead to overall improved spoken language skills among children with profound hearing loss. Some factors associated with successful language acquisition …

Normal language in abnormal brains.

There is little doubt that, in the adult, specific brain lesions cause specific language deficits. Yet, brain localizations of linguistic functions are made problematic by several reported cases of normal language in spite of major brain anomalies, mostly, but not exclusively, occurring early in life. The signal cases are hydrocephaly, spina bifida and hemispherectomy. These cases are discussed and possible solutions are suggested: namely a vast redundancy of neurons and/or the role of microtubules as neuron-internal processors and key factors in signaling and guiding the growth and reconfigur…
