Baylisascaris Potosis Larvae in Mice of Different Strains and Infectivity of Tissue Larvae.

Migration of Baylisascaris potosis larvae in different mouse strains were compared, and infectivity of the persisting larvae in mice tissues were investigated. Five strains of mice, BALB/c, C57BL/6, AKR, B10.BR, and ICR were inoculated with 1,000 B. potosis eggs/mouse, and necropsied at week 13 post inoculation (PI). The other uninfected ICR mice (secondary host) were inoculated with 43 larvae/ mouse recovered from mice at week 13 PI with eggs, and necropsied at day 21 PI. Larvae in organs or tissues were counted at necropsy. One AKR mouse showed torticollis and circling at day 56 PI. At necro…

Raccoon ascarid larvae (Baylisascaris procyonis) as a cause of ocular larva migrans.

Larvae of the common raccoon roundworm, Baylisascaris procyonis, are known causes of visceral larva migrans and CNS disease in animals and human beings. In the present experiments we examined the ability of B. procyonis to cause ocular larva migrans (OLM) in subhuman primates, as an indication of its possible ocular zoonotic importance. Squirrel monkeys given 5,000 or 10,000 infective B. procyonis eggs per os and cynomolgus monkeys given 20,000 eggs had clinical and histologic evidence of OLM, beginning 7 days after inoculation. Clinically, multifocal retinal hemorrhages, white spots, choriore…

Regulation of motor neuron differentiation in the Ciona larva.

Here we investigate the gene regulatory networks responsible for the differentiation of cholinergic neurons in the Ciona larval motor ganglion, which functions as the organism's central pattern generator for swimming and dispersal. We demonstrate conserved roles motor neuron-enriched transcription factors Neurogenin and Onecut, with Neurogenin likely sitting atop the regulatory cascade. We also identify a key role for the transcription factor Nkx6 in specifying one motor neuron subtype, Motor Neuron 1 (MN1), and show that the secreted Wnt pathway inhibitor Dkk3 is required by MN1 for its uniqu…

Human Neural Larva Migrans Caused by Ophidascaris robertsi Ascarid.

We describe a case in Australia of human neural larva migrans caused by the ascarid Ophidascaris robertsi, for which Australian carpet pythons are definitive hosts. We made the diagnosis after a live nematode was removed from the brain of a 64-year-old woman who was immunosuppressed for a hypereosinophilic syndrome diagnosed 12 months earlier.

Larva Currens: Report of Seven Cases and Literature Review.

Strongyloidiasis is a frequent and often unrecognized parasitic disease because of the frequently asymptomatic nature and lack of sensitivity of diagnostic tests. Under conditions of immunosuppression (particularly systemic corticosteroid treatment), potentially fatal dissemination may occur. Thus, prevention and early diagnosis are important. Larva currens is a rare and pathognomonic cutaneous sign of strongyloidiasis, but is poorly described because of its unpredictable and fleeting occurrence. We report seven imported cases of larva currens seen in Paris between 1990 and 2020. We illustrate…

Exploring Tropical Infections: A Focus on Cutaneous Larva Migrans.

GENERAL PURPOSE: To provide information about infection with cutaneous larva migrans (CLM). TARGET AUDIENCE: This continuing education activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, NPs, and nurses with an interest in skin and wound care. LEARNING OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES: After participating in this educational activity, the participant will:1. Distinguish the clinical features, diagnosis, and management of CLM.2. Explain the epidemiology of CLM. ABSTRACT: Cutaneous larva migrans is a hookworm infection and one of the most common skin diseases of tourists in tropical countries. Most…

External Ophthalmomyiasis Caused by Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Challiphoride) Larva.

Myiasis is an animal or human pathogenic condition initiated by parasitic dipterous fly larvae feeding in the host's necrotic or living tissue. Here we report a case of external ophthalmomyiasis caused by Lucilia sericata in a 78-yr-old with a vascular tumor of the retina and surgery history, from Bijar City of Kurdistan Province, Iran in 2015. Associated symptoms included right eye pain with mucoid ocular discharge, headache, sensing the presence of a foreign body in the eye and itching. Examination revealed a L. sericata Larva in his right eye. Infestation of ocular tissue by fly larvae (oph…
