Microsurgical resection of tumors of the lateral and third ventricles: operative corridors for difficult-to-reach lesions.

Tumors of the lateral and third ventricles are cradled on all sides by vital vascular and eloquent neural structures. Microsurgical resection, which always requires attentive planning, plays a critical role in the contemporary management of these lesions. This article provides an overview of the open microsurgical approaches to the region highlighting key clinical perspectives.

Estimation of the lateral ventricles volumes from a 2D image and its relationship with cerebrospinal fluid flow.

PURPOSE: This work suggests a fast estimation method of the lateral ventricles volume from a 2D image and then determines if this volume is correlated with the cerebrospinal fluid flow at the aqueductal and cerebral levels in neurodegenerative diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five elderly patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease (19), normal pressure hydrocephalus (13), and vascular dementia (13) were involved and underwent anatomical and phase contrast MRI scans. Lateral ventricles and stroke volumes were assessed on anatomical and phase contrast scans, respectively. A common refere…

Measurement of the lateral ventricles in the neonatal head: comparison of 2-D and 3-D techniques.

Neonatal cranial ultrasound is routinely performed to screen preterm infants for complications of prematurity. A key component of this examination is the measurement of the lateral ventricles to identify and monitor ventriculomegaly. This study assesses the two-dimensional (2-D) interobserver error of neonatal cranial lateral ventricle measurements on 40 neonates who were undergoing cranial ultrasound in the neonatal intensive care unit. Three-dimensional (3-D) volumes were obtained using a matrix transducer. Lateral ventricle (LV) measurements were subsequently measured on a departmental 3-D …

Treatment of Fourth Ventricle Arachnoid Cyst via Anterior Hone of Lateral Ventricle Using Flexible Endoscope.

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts are common anomalies in the intracranial region. However, an intraventricular arachnoid cyst is rare, and occurrence within the fourth ventricle is especially uncommon; only 16 cases have been described in the literature. Arachnoid cysts in the fourth ventricle may cause obstructive hydrocephalus or cerebellar ataxia or cranial nerve palsy. Treatment of a fourth ventricular arachnoid cyst is complete or partial resection via a midline suboccipital approach. Recently, endoscopic fenestration has become the procedure of choice in the treatment of arachnoid cysts in su

Rupture of the lateral ventricle secondary to a fourth ventricle tumour resulting in an indirect nontraumatic cerebrospinal fluid fistula.

We present a rare indirect nontraumatic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula secondary to a fourth ventricle ependymoma. The fistula resulted from rupture of the left temporal horn, distant from the tumour. The fistula was well demonstrated by MRI. High-resolution CT demonstrated a defect in the roof of the sphenoid sinus, but no leakage of CSF was seen on CT cisternography.

Anatomy of corpus callosum and lateral ventricle: a fiber dissection study.

OBJECTIVE: This fiber dissection study aimed to explore the anatomy of the fibers of corpus callosum. In addition, the authors sought to exp … method to demonstrate this anatomy. A detailed understanding of anatomy of corpus callosum and the lateral ventricles is essential for neurosurgeons for performing surgery of intraventricular tumors as well as disconnective epilepsy surgery procedures. Three-dimensional understanding of this anatomy can be developed by performing fiber dissections.

Lateral ventricle ectopic schwannoma: Case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Cases of lateral ventricular ectopic schwannomas (LVES) are extremely rare, with only 23 cases reported thus far. This study aimed to obtain a better understanding of the disease. METHODS: We reported a rare case of LVES, in which the patient was admitted to our hospital, and reviewed the relevant literature on LVES to summarize and analyze the clinical manifestations, pathologies, imaging features and progress. RESULTS: Of the 23 patients, LVES was more common in men (74%, 17/23) than in women and was mostly located on the right side (78%, 18/23). The average age at clinical pre

Lateral ventricle subependymoma resected with a transcallosal approach: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Subependymomas are World Health Organization grade I tumors, and 30% occur in the lateral ventricles. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment, and the transcallosal or transcortical/transsulcal approaches are preferred for those tumors occurring near the foramen of Monro or atrium. Visualization, proximity to the fornix and basal ganglia, hydrocephalus, and brain retraction during surgery make these operations challenging. The authors present the case of a 65-year-old male with a subependymoma located in the left lateral ventricle. The tumor was completely resected using an interhemis…

[Ependymomas of the lateral ventricle. A series of 27 cases with review of the literature].

Twenty-seven cases of ependymoma were collected in the French multicentric study dedicated to lateral ventricle tumors. The mean age of patients was 31,5 years. All patients underwent surgery, with complete resection of the tumor in 76% of cases. Histologic examination disclosed 23 grade 2 ependymomas and four grade 3 ependymomas. Postoperative mortality was 7%. Four patients underwent radiotherapy, and five chemotherapy. Local recurrence of the tumor occurred in seven cases, with a mean delay of 48 months. Disseminated disease within the central nervous system was found in only one patient. M

Inflammatory pseudotumor in the lateral ventricle with repeated bleeding-case report-.

Inflammatory pseudotumor is an uncommon lesion with unknown etiology characterized by sclerosing inflammation which clinically and radiographically mimics a neoplastic lesion. A 47-year-old man presented with sudden headache and dysarthria. Brain CT scan revealed a 2.6x2.2 cm sized, round, and hyperdense mass in the anterolateral wall of the left lateral ventricular trigone. On MR imaging studies, the mass showed low signal intensity in the wall of the trigone on T2-weighted image, central mixed (iso- and high-) signal intensity with peripheral low-signal intensity on T1-weighted image. Subtle

Lateral ventricle gliomas and central neurocytomas in adults diagnosis and perspectives.

Neuroimaging data of lateral ventricle gliomas and central neurocytomas diagnosed in one institution were reviewed and compared to the corresponding literature data. CT and MRI imaging characteristics of the two tumour types are rather different, both in reported cases as well as in our material. In our series ventricular ependymomas (eight cases) were mostly hyperdense with pronounced contrast uptake. Thirteen subependymomas were hypodense, mostly without enhancement, but occasionally mild or moderate enhancement was noted. Eight subependymal giant cell astrocytomas also displayed hypodense,

Liponeurocytoma of the left lateral ventricle--case report and review of the literature.

The reported liponeurocytoma of the left lateral ventricle in a 35-year-old man represents the fifth recorded case of a supratentorial intraventricular liponeurocytoma. In this location, liponeurocytomas are very exceptional, whereas it is the typical site for classic central neurocytomas. Conversely, neurocytomas of the cerebellum are predominantly liponeurocytomas with until now more than 25 reported cases. Thus, cerebellar liponeurocytoma is the most frequent neuroepithelial CNS tumor with adipose-like cells followed by ependymomas with a lipid component and supratentorial intraventricular

Fetal lateral ventricle choroid plexus cysts: the dilemma of amniocentesis.

Although lateral ventricle choroid plexus cysts in the second-trimester fetus have been considered a benign developmental phenomenon of no clinical significance, an association with trisomy 18 has been suggested. We designed a prospective study to determine whether karyotype analysis is indicated when such cysts are encountered on prenatal sonogram. During a 20-month period, 5400 low-risk pregnant women were examined sonographically in the second trimester to evaluate the prevalence of fetal lateral ventricle choroid plexus cysts and the incidence of ultrasonographic anomalies associated with

Tumors at the trigone of the lateral ventricle--clinical analysis of eight cases.

Tumors at the trigone of the lateral ventricles are relatively rare. The authors have operated on eight cases with trigonal tumors during a 10-year period. Four cases were true intraventricular tumors arising from the ventricular walls, consisting of two meningiomas, one cavernous angioma, and one choroid plexus papilloma. On the other hand, the remaining four cases were paraventricular tumors originating in the adjacent brain and consisted of three astrocytomas and one glioblastoma multiforme. Although these trigonal tumors were readily detected with computed tomographic (CT) scanning, differ…

[Papilloma of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle without generalized hydrocephalus].

A benign papilloma of the choroid plexus of the left lateral ventricle is found in a five-month old infant. An important dilatation of the isolated occipital horn is observed, without generalized enlargement of the ventricles. The clinical signs are limited to a moderate macrocephaly with deviation of head and eyes to the left. The absence of global hydrocephalus is rather exceptional in such cases, where overproduction of cerebrospinal fluid, in an amount proportional to the tumoral mass, is generally admitted. Nevertheless, the literature offers no absolute proof of the role of oversecretion
