The leech nervous system: a valuable model to study the microglia involvement in regenerative processes.

Microglia are intrinsic components of the central nervous system (CNS). During pathologies in mammals, inflammatory processes implicate the resident microglia and the infiltration of blood cells including macrophages. Functions of microglia appear to be complex as they exhibit both neuroprotective and neurotoxic effects during neuropathological conditions in vivo and in vitro. The medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis is a well-known model in neurobiology due to its ability to naturally repair its CNS following injury. Considering the low infiltration of blood cells in this process, the leech CNS

Experimental infection of yellow stingrays Urobatis jamaicensis with the marine leech Branchellion torpedinis.

Infestations of elasmobranchs by the marine leech Branchellion torpedinis can be problematic in aquaria and negatively affect host health. To better characterize the extent and pathogenesis of disease, 12 yellow stingrays Urobatis jamaicensis were infected with 1 or 3 leeches for 14 d. Leeches were associated with anorexia, extensive cutaneous ulceration, decreased host packed cell volume (PCV) and serum total solids (TS), and mortality in 3 rays. Average decrease in host PCV positively correlated with ulcer size and parasite:host ratio. Average decrease in host serum TS positively correlated …

A new species of glossiphoniid leech from Rana pretiosa (Amphibia: Ranidae) in Oregon.

A new species of ectoparasitic glossiphoniid leech was found feeding on frogs in the Nature Center Pond and elsewhere in Deschutes County, Oregon. The new species of Placobdella resembles the southern alligator leech, Placobdella multilineata Moore, 1953, notwithstanding their vast geographic separation in North America. The new species is readily distinguished by possessing subdivided annuli, by its papillation and pigmentation patterns as well as by the arrangement of ovarian tissues. There is strong evidence of nocturnality and of the potential for parasitizing humans.

Aquatic leech infestation: a rare cause of severe anaemia in an adolescent Tanzanian girl.

UNLABELLED: We report on a 15-year-old girl who presented with a history of chest pain, coughing, intermittent haemoptysis, fever, pallor and vomiting to a rural hospital in Tanzania. She was severely anaemic with signs of cardiorespiratory distress. Haemoglobin was 4.8 g/dl; the chest X-ray film was normal. She required one unit of blood. After 3 days, she vomited up a small parasite which proved to be an aquatic leech. Oesophagogastroscopy, then performed, revealed four small mucosal lesions in the pharynx and upper oesophagus. No other leeches were seen. Further oesophagogastroscopy 4 days …

Axonal projections of mechanosensory neurons in the connectives and peripheral nerves of the leech, Haemopis marmorata.

The axonal projections of the seven mechanosensory neurons in the connectives and peripheral nerves were examined by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injections. In the connective the closely functionally related mechanosensory neurons travel in two bilaterally symmetrical regions, which comprise less than 10% of the connective's cross-sectional area. This grouping may reflect the similar functional properties and synaptic connections of the cells. Serial sections through the neuropil-connective junction zone showed that the organization of the axons is independent of glial fasciculation. Fascicle

Validation of Medicinal Leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) as a Non-invasive Blood Sampling Tool for Hematology and Biochemistry Profiling in Mammals.

Blood sampling is a challenging procedure in many captive animals. Although manual restraint or anesthesia are usually possible, they entail intense stress and a high risk of injuries or organ failure. Blood sampling using medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) represents a promising non-invasive alternative to venipuncture; however, leech blood meal was to date used only for qualitative analyses such as genetic or serological screenings. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of the leech blood sampling method for quantification of hematological and biochemical parameter…

Integrating technology in leech therapy: Toward standardized evidence-based Ayurvedic practice.

Jalaukavacharana (leech therapy), an integral part of Ayurvedic medicine, is widely recognized for its benefits in managing chronic wounds, inflammatory conditions, and vascular disorders. However, its traditional application often lacks standardized procedures, real-time monitoring, and regulatory oversight, limiting its acceptance in modern clinical practice. While these challenges are notable in the Indian context, including species misidentification and inconsistent protocols, they are also encountered globally, even in countries where leech therapy is medically recognized. This narrative

Laryngeal Leech as a Live Foreign Body: Case Reports and a Safe Removal Technique.

Leech infestation in the larynx is a rare condition with serious implications due to airway obstruction and persistent bleeding. This report presents two cases of dysphonia and hemoptysis caused by laryngeal leeches after consuming contaminated water. Both patients underwent successful removal under general anesthesia using rigid laryngoscopy and 10% lidocaine spray for safe detachment. The cases highlight the importance of prompt diagnosis and effective techniques for managing this rare but potentially hazardous condition.

Mystical Effect of Leech Therapy an Alternative Ayurvedic Intervention in Thrombophlebitis: A Case Report.

CONTEXT: Phlebitis, or vein inflammation, is a prevalent in peripheral intravenous cannula consequence that can have mechanical, chemical or bacterial causes. Phlebitis results in a series of unfavorable consequences, including severe discomfort, pain, failure of the PIVC, stoppage of the recommended therapy and need for the insertion of a new PIVC, which is linked with higher equipment costs and staff time and patient discomfort. Conventional treatment generally includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, compression therapy, and anticoagulants, but alternative therapies like Leech Therapy

Umbilical Incarcerated Hernia With Omental Eventration Caused by a Leech Bite in a Pediatric Patient.

Medicinal leech therapy (MLT) is used in various medical disciplines, among which are reconstructive surgery and microsurgery. Medicinal leech therapy is also often adopted by alternative and traditional medicine, aiming to treat various common medical symptoms, such as fever and arthritis. Congenital umbilical hernia is a rather common physical finding in the pediatric population, where every third Caucasian newborn, roughly, is being diagnosed with the condition, and even more so among the African population. Fortunately, most cases resolve spontaneously in the first years of life. Toddlers

The Vascularity of Ayurvedic Leech Therapy: Sensory Translations and Emergent Agencies in Interspecies Medicine.

This article offers vascularity as a multi-dimensional imaginary for the interspecies entanglements constituting Ayurvedic leech therapy. Whether, when, where, and how a leech decides to bite, suck, and release comprise pivotal junctures in leech therapy as practiced in southern Kerala, India. In the course of leech-human intra-actions, leeches translate matter, providing sensory mediation, relief, and amusement. Enmeshed in social and ecological relations inflected by gender, religion, class, and caste, this analysis of Ayurvedic leech therapy reframes questions of agencies starting with and …

Pediatric Vaginal Leech Infestation with Severe Bleeding: A Case Report and Review Article.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal leech infestation is a rare event with vaginal bleeding being its prominent sign. Few cases have been reported in young children. CASE: In this article, we present a case of vaginal leech infestation in a 2-year-old girl who presented with significant vaginal bleeding that caused severe acute anemia, prompting transfusion. On examination, she appeared anemic, but healthy, without any signs of pubertal development. The leech was seen during examination with the patient under anesthesia and was removed. With removal of the leech, bleeding decreased significantly and stopped

Anal abscess due to leech therapy of hemorrhoids: mumbo jumbo is still in vogue.

Anorectal sepsis usually presents with anal abscesses, which may evolve to become anorectal fistulas. Most of these cases are either of cryptoglandular origin, or they develop secondary to inflammatory bowel diseases. A 32-year-old male patient applied to our Proctology Unit with severe anal pain and swelling. Three days before admission, leeches were applied to the hemorrhoidal swellings in a medical center. The abscess was drained with appropriate unroofing and search for any compartments. The patient recovered rapidly. The abscess culture and microscopy revealed mix flora with predominant E…

[A rare case report of laryngeal leech infestation in a 70-year-old man].

Foreign bodies in the upper respiratory tract are one of the most difficult otolaryngological emergencies; leeches are a very rare foreign bodies in the world. We report the case of a 70-year-old man with no past medical history presenting with laryngeal dyspnea associated with low abundant paroxysmal hemoptysis. The patient underwent nasofibroscopy showing the presence of a living and mobile organism at the subglottic level evoking a leech. Extraction was carried out under local anesthesia using laryngoscope and Magill forceps. The presence of a leech as a foreign body in the upper respirator…

Unani treatment and leech therapy saved the diabetic foot of a patient from amputation.

Every 30 seconds, a lower limb amputation is carried out due to diabetes throughout the world. The mortality rate due to diabetic foot gangrene is just next to that of cancer. As tissue death cannot be reversed, surgical removal of the affected tissue (debridement) or amputation of the limb is the only treatment option left when gangrene has advanced. The present case study illustrates an option to treat poorly healing diabetic wounds with Unani medicine (blood purifier and deobstruent) besides hirudotherapy. The study was performed on a 60-year-old woman suffering from diabetic foot (on the l
