[Refractive outcomes of out-of-the-bag intraocular lens implantation].

UNLABELLED: For the moment, the refractive outcomes of out-of-the-bag intraocular lens (IOL) implantation remain insufficiently studied. PURPOSE: To study and compare the refractive outcomes of retropupillary implantation of an iris-claw lens and transscleral suture fixation of IOL in complicated phacoemulsification. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 70 patients (73 eyes) after complicated phacoemulsification in combination with grade 2 lens subluxation. The first group included 36 patients (39 eyes) who underwent complicated phacoemulsification using torsional ultrasound and retropup…

Partially absorbed cataractous lens in the anterior chamber revealing neglected severe ocular contusion: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ocular contusion can produce severe lesions, which if not treated appropriately and promptly, can lead to visual impairment. Ocular contusion in childhood may not be reported by children. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27 year old female presented with a partially absorbed cataractous lens that was dislocated into the anterior chamber of her left eye. There was mild anterior chamber reaction. She reported no history of ocular trauma; but associated findings and further investigations were in favour of a post-traumatic aetiology. CONCLUSION: All ocular injuries require a detailed ophthalmol

Bilateral traumatic anterior crystalline lens dislocation by watersplash during Songkran festival: case report.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of bilateral anterior dislocated crystalline lens from water splash during the Songkran festival. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A healthy 46-year-old woman with a previous history of having water thrown to her face at the Songkran festival complained of acute bilateral painful visual loss. On examination, visual acuity was 0.1 OD, 0.2 OS, and both eyes revealed anterior dislocated crystalline lens with blood in anterior chamber. Her intraocular pressure (IOP) was 8 mmHg OD and 47 mmHg OS. She was initially treated with medication for controlling IOP and inflammation. Eventu

Scleral suspension pars-plana lensectomy for ectopia lentis followed by suture fixation of intraocular lens.

PURPOSE: To describe a simple technique of scleral suspension-pars plana lensectomy (SS-PPL) in acquired and congenital ectopia lentis and scleral fixation of intraocular lens (IOL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty eyes of 16 patients (12 unilateral and 4 bilateral cases of "essential familial lens subluxation") aged 10-40 years (mean 25 years) underwent SS-PPL with implantation of scleral fixated IOL. Indications for surgery were best-corrected visual acuity < 6/18, bisection of pupil by the lens, and lens-induced glaucoma. Prerequisites for SS-PPL were, visibility of part of the lens in the p…

Pediatric Microspherophakia Treatment With Scleral Fixated IOL Using a Z-suture Technique.

Microspherophakia constitutes a rare, mostly bilateral anomaly of the crystalline lens, which is characterized by the presence of an increased lens thickness and reduced equatorial diameter. It is frequently associated with lens subluxation, translating into a high degree of variable lenticular myopia and defective accommodation. The purpose of this report is to describe the treatment of a three-year-old female patient with microspherophakia, with the scleral fixation of an intraocular lens using the z-suture technique. A three-year-old female patient with Marfan Syndrome presented with high b…

Anterior capsulorhexis opening reduction after cataract surgery with subluxated lenses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: This study sought to evaluate anterior capsulorhexis opening (ACO) reductions after surgery for a subluxated lens. Significant reduction of an ACO supports direct zonular involvement (capsular factors excluded by use of capsular tension rings [CTRs] and modern intraocular lens [IOLs]), and these findings question the long-term efficacy of subluxated lens surgery by means of cataract surgery. A small ACO due to lens mobility, non-enlargement of the ACO, and no lens epithelial cell washing due to an additional risk of further zonular damage were left as additional featu

Visual and refractive outcomes in pediatric Marfan syndrome.

PURPOSE: To describe the refractive outcomes and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) for pediatric patients with Marfan syndrome. METHODS: … lications included retinal detachment in 3 (1.4%) eyes and glaucoma in 3 (1.4%) eyes. CONCLUSIONS: Lens subluxation requires precise refraction measurements and some patients may benefit from aphakic correction. Pseudophakic eyes often demonstrate low residual refractive error and BCVA comparable to phakic eyes without lens subluxation.

Unilateral lens capsule rupture with anterior nuclear extrusion in a North American river otter (Lontra canadensis).

A 10-year-old intact male North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) was evaluated under general anesthesia by a zoo veterinarian and 2 Board-certified ophthalmologists concerning a white opacity in the anterior chamber of the right eye (OD). Ophthalmic examination of OD revealed ventral keratitis, a hypermature cataract, equatorial lens capsule rupture, and anterior luxation of the lens nucleus. The right eye lacked a dazzle, direct, and indirect pupillary reflexes. No ocular anomalies were noted in the left eye. Enucleation of OD was conducted due to vision loss, the anticipation of cons

Traumatic cataract.

Cataract formation is commonly observed as a result of direct penetration of the crystalline lens by a foreign object or by blunt trauma to the globe or adnexa, creating a "shock wave" within the eye. Partial or total damage to the zonules may also occur, resulting in subluxation or total displacement of the crystalline lens. The primary care doctor of optometry plays an important role in evaluating patients with cataract, both immediately and long after the injury has occurred. Many of these patients can be managed conservatively by careful observation, while others will require surgical inte

A modified technique for extracting a dislocated lens with perfluorocarbon liquids and viscoelastics.

The authors describe a modified technique for extraction of a dislocated crystalline lens or large and hard lens fragments displaced into the vitreous cavity. An ophthalmic viscosurgical device was used around and on top of the heavy liquid bubble to keep the lens centered and less mobile for easier phacofragmentation or removal by the cutting-suction probe. This technique was used in 10 eyes, including cases of traumatic dislocation and Marfan syndrome, with excellent anatomical results and no complications that could be attributed to the surgical technique. The technique has also been used t
