The immunologic profile during erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) revealed increased percentage and absolute count of B-lymphocytes, in addition to considerably lowered levels of complement component C3. Renal involvement in 20 lepromatous leprosy (LL) and 5 non- lepromatous patients was assessed by (a) biochemical analysis of blood and urine, (b) renal functional tests, and (c) histopathological examination of renal biopsies. Ten age-matched healthy normals formed the control group. Autonomic neuropathy in leprosy has been reported recently. 25 cases of polar lepromatous leprosy with and without lepra-reaction and 25 normal control, have been studied for respiratory dysautonomia. In 12 cases out of 25 (48%) involvement of sympathetic respiratory reflexes has been observed. Possible causes of the same are discussed.

A clinical examination of 199 leprosy patients in Kenya showed that 62.5% had abnormal ocular findings, 51.2% of which were leprosy related. The potentially blinding lesions were uveitis, keratitis and lagophthalmos and these were found in 22.1% of the patients. 6 Patients (3%) had a visual acuity of less than 3/60 in the better eye and were classified blind. The integrity of the autonomic control of the cardiovascular system was studied in 21 patients with lepromatous leprosy and in ten normal people using several simple tests based on cardiovascular reflexes. Serum lysozyme was assessed in 43 healthy subjects and 183 leprosy patients. Significantly elevated level of lysozyme was observed in sera of leprosy patients as compared to normal individuals. Serum immunoglobulins were quantitated by radial immunodiffusion in 25 cases each of tuberculoid and lepromatous leprosy. Immunoglobulins estimated from 50 normal healthy adults were the control. The diabetic status of the local Jhansi patients (120 cases) was established before and after antileprosy treatment. Control studies were performed in normal healthy subjects (50 persons) without family history of diabetes mellitus. Random normals showed an incidence of diabetes only 2%, while leprosy patients (94 males and 26 females) had incidence of diabetic status of 14.2%. Eight patients who had concomitant leprosy and leishmaniasis are described. Two patients with lepromatous leprosy had high resistance leishmaniasis, implying that the immune deficiency in lepromatous leprosy is specific to Mycobacterium leprae.
