Life history of a new Paraceratheriid from the Early Oligocene of Northwest China.

Understanding life history is crucial for elucidating mammalian evolution. Body size and tooth development have long been fundamental parame … gene species exhibited a life history pace comparable to its Quaternary relatives. The evolution of life history traits in Rhinocerotoidea has been relatively conservative since the Oligocene and does not consistently correlate with shifts in body size. This study establishes a foundation for understanding the evolution of life histories in this group.

Recent evolution of large offspring size and post-fertilization nutrient provisioning in swordtails.

Organisms have evolved diverse reproductive strategies that impact the probability that their offspring survive to adulthood. Using morphological measurements in embryos and fry, gene expression analysis and hybrid crosses, we describe divergence in reproductive strategy between two closely related species of swordtail fish (Xiphophorus), which have internal fertilization and give birth to free-swimming fry. We find that one species, Xiphophorus malinche, has evolved larger offspring than its closest relative Xiphophorus birchmanni and dwarfs the offspring size of other species in the genus. T

Life-history studies on infrapopulations of Mazocraes alosae (Monogenea) parasitising Alosa immaculata (Actinopterygii) in the northern Black and Azov Seas.

The life-history of Mazocraes alosae Hermann, 1782 on one of its hosts, the Pontic shad Alosa immaculata Bennett, is described for the first time. This anadromous fish, which occurs off the coast of the Crimea and migrates from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov and into the River Don for spawning, was studied throughout its migration and during all seasons. It is demonstrated that the period of reproduction of this monogenean is significantly longer than that reported for the population in the Caspian Sea, lasting from April to November with a peak in April-May, and continues both in the sea an

Mosquito and primate ecology predict human risk of yellow fever virus spillover in Brazil.

Many (re)emerging infectious diseases in humans arise from pathogen spillover from wildlife or livestock, and accurately predicting pathogen spillover is an important public health goal. In the Americas, yellow fever in humans primarily occurs following spillover from non-human primates via mosquitoes. Predicting yellow fever spillover can improve public health responses through vector control and mass vaccination. Here, we develop and test a mechanistic model of pathogen spillover to predict human risk for yellow fever in Brazil. This environmental risk model, based on the ecology of mosquito

The Personality Profile of Tinnitus Sufferers and a Nontinnitus Control Group.

BACKGROUND: Chronic tinnitus (phantom perception of sound) significantly disrupts quality of life in 15-20% of those who experience it. Understanding how certain personality traits impact tinnitus perception and distress can be beneficial for the development of interventions to improve the lives of tinnitus sufferers. PURPOSE: Four key self-reported personality traits (social closeness, stress reaction, alienation, and self-control) were identified from previous research as being associated with tinnitus. These were compared between tinnitus and age-, gender-, and hearing level-matched nontin

Screening for genetic traits and diseases.

Genetic screening should greatly improve the quality of life. A thorough family and medical history is the basis for identifying families at high risk for genetic traits and diseases. Recognition is enhanced by awareness of diseases associated with certain racial, ethnic or geographic groups. Effective genetic screening requires close collaboration between physicians, public health officers and medical investigators.

Psychological risk factors of incidence of breast cancer: a prospective cohort study in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Belief that depression and other psychological factors predict breast cancer is common, but there have been few prospective epidemiological studies on this relationship. METHOD: The relationship between depression, personality traits, illness attitudes, life events and health history, and breast cancer risk was studied in a prospective, 6-9 year follow-up of a cohort study of 10892 Finnish women of 48-50 years of age at the baseline. Cancer cases were obtained from the Cancer Registry of Finland. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed controlling for socioeconomic

Factors differentiating personality-disordered individuals with and without a history of unipolar mood disorder.

The relationship between mood disorders and personality disorders has been of longstanding interest to clinicians. Despite theoretical reasons to do so, virtually no studies have examined factors that discriminate personality-disordered subjects with a history of mood disorder (PD/HMD) from personality-disordered subjects without a history of mood disorder (PD). This study examined demographic variables, patterns of comorbidity, measures of life functioning, personality traits, and early life experiences differentiating PD/HMD (n = 83) from PD (n = 214). Diagnoses were assigned using structure

Associations Between Trauma, Early Maladaptive Schemas, Personality Traits, and Clinical Severity in Eating Disorder Patients: A Clinical Presentation and Mediation Analysis.

Background: The literature has shown a significant association between traumatic experiences and eating psychopathology, showing a greater symptomatology in patients with trauma history. Less is known about the associations between trauma and cognitive schemas, and personality traits and the differences between childhood and adulthood trauma experiences. Thus, this paper aims to assess the clinical and psychological characteristics of eating disorder (ED) patients, looking for differences between patients without a history of trauma and patients with trauma experiences, as well as at possible

Distribution of congenital melanocytic naevi and congenital naevus-like naevi in a survey of 3406 Italian schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: Scanty information is available on the prevalence of congenital melanocytic naevi (CMN) and congenital naevus-like naevi (CNLN), particularly the small ones. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of CMN/CNLN in Italian schoolchildren, and to assess variations according to potential risk factors for melanoma. METHODS: We conducted a survey in 13 Italian areas on 3406 schoolchildren aged 12-17 years. Children were examined by dermatologists who assessed pigmentary traits and made a count of small (6-15 mm in diameter) and medium/large (> 15 mm) CMN/CNLN on 19 anatomical areas. RE

Genome size variation in deep-sea amphipods.

Genome size varies considerably across taxa, and extensive research effort has gone into understanding whether variation can be explained by differences in key ecological and life-history traits among species. The extreme environmental conditions that characterize the deep sea have been hypothesized to promote large genome sizes in eukaryotes. Here we test this supposition by examining genome sizes among 13 species of deep-sea amphipods from the Mariana, Kermadec and New Hebrides trenches. Genome sizes were estimated using flow cytometry and found to vary nine-fold, ranging from 4.06 pg (4.04

Protein folds and catalytic strategies at the origin of biological CO2 fixation.

Biological carbon fixation is the basis of all ecosystems. Out of the seven known pathways organisms use to fix CO2, the acetyl-CoA pathway is assumed to be the most ancient. Its enzymes bear primordial traits, including carbon-metal bonds and an abundance of transition metal clusters. Ancient traits can also be reflected in structural folds adopted by the enzymes and the catalytic strategies they employ. Here I show that the most common catalytic strategies used to accelerate reactions in the acetyl-CoA pathway are cofactor-aided catalysis, electrostatic interactions and general acid/base cat

Does the Infestation by Trematode Parasites Influence Trade-Offs Between Somatic Condition and Male Reproductive Traits in a Viviparous Fish?

Life history theory predicts that a trade-off may occur when an increased investment in one fitness component causes a reduced investment in another. Parasites generate changes in the optimal life history traits of organisms, causing compromises for their hosts. The objective of this research was to determine whether trematodes Clinostomum sp. and Uvulifer sp. inflict measurable damage on the males of the viviparous fish Poeciliopsis infans, generating trade-offs between somatic condition and reproductive traits (gonad mass and gonopodium length). We found (i) a negative relationship of large …

Reduced body size of insular black-tailed deer is caused by slowed development.

Adult body size correlates strongly with fitness, but mean body sizes frequently differ among conspecific populations. Ultimate, fitness-based explanations for these deviations in animals typically focus on community-level or physiological processes (e.g., competition, thermoregulation). However, proximate mechanisms underlying adaptive body size adjustments remain poorly understood. Adjustments in adult body size may result from shifts in growth-related life-history traits, such as the length of time to achieve adult body size (i.e., growth period) and how quickly the body increases in size (

Phenotypic and metabolic plasticity shapes life-history strategies under combinations of abiotic stresses.

Plants developed various reversible and non-reversible acclimation mechanisms to cope with the multifaceted nature of abiotic-stress combinations. We hypothesized that in order to endure these stress combinations, plants elicit distinctive acclimation strategies through specific trade-offs between reproduction and defense. To investigate Brachypodium distachyon acclimation strategies to combinations of salinity, drought and heat, we applied a system biology approach, integrating physiological, metabolic, and transcriptional analyses. We analyzed the trade-offs among functional and performance

Natural commensal microbes induce internal hatching in C. elegans.

The microbiome is increasingly recognized as a key factor of the plasticity of host life-history traits. Using the Caenorhabditis elegans model system, we examined how naturally associated bacterial strains affect internal egg hatching, a stress-adaptive reproductive strategy in this species. Among the bacterial strains tested, four strains (Ochrobactrum BH3, Lelliottia JUb66, Pantoea BIGb0393, and Enterobacter CEent1) induced high levels of internal hatching (28-57%) in C. elegans during late adulthood, compared to <5% in animals grown on E. coli OP50. These effects were accompanied by extend

A multidimensional model of psychobiological interactions in functional dyspepsia: a structural equation modelling approach.

OBJECTIVE: Gastric sensorimotor function, abuse history, 'trait' and 'state' psychological factors and 'somatisation' all play a role in functional dyspepsia (FD) and its associated impaired quality of life (QoL), but their interplay remains poorly understood. We aimed to test a comprehensive, a priori hypothesised model of interactions between these dimensions in FD. DESIGN: In 259 FD patients, we studied gastric sensitivity with a barostat. We measured abuse history (sexual/physical, childhood/adulthood), 'trait' (alexithymia, trait anxiety) and 'state' (positive/negative affect, depression

Genomic regions exhibiting divergent DNA methylation patterns co-vary with loci associated with sexual signalling traits in a stick insect.

The evolution of signalling traits can affect local adaptation, mate choice and the development of reproductive isolation between diverging populations. While the genetic basis of many sexual signalling traits is well characterized, variation in these traits may also reflect regulatory mechanisms, including epigenetic marks. However, the extent to which epigenetic marks, particularly DNA methylation, are associated with signalling traits remains unclear. Here, we focus on epigenetic variation and cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), the latter being chemical traits that can be used for mate choice i

Integrating life history and cross-immunity into the evolutionary dynamics of pathogens.

Models for the diversity and evolution of pathogens have branched into two main directions: the adaptive dynamics of quantitative life-history traits (notably virulence) and the maintenance and invasion of multiple, antigenically diverse strains that interact with the host's immune memory. In a first attempt to reconcile these two approaches, we developed a simple modelling framework where two strains of pathogens, defined by a pair of life-history traits (infectious period and infectivity), interfere through a given level of cross-immunity. We used whooping cough as a potential example, but t

The role of species ecology in predicting Toxoplasma gondii prevalence in wild and domesticated mammals globally.

Macroecological approaches can provide valuable insight into the epidemiology of globally distributed, multi-host pathogens. Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan that infects any warm-blooded animal, including humans, in almost every habitat worldwide. Toxoplasma gondii infects its hosts through oocysts in the environment, carnivory of tissue cysts within intermediate host prey and vertical transmission. These routes of infection enable specific predictions regarding the ecological and life history traits that should predispose specific taxa to higher exposure and, thus infection rates of T. gondi…
