Assessing the impact of day programs on individuals living with dementia and their family/friend caregivers (AIDA-DemCare): protocol of a prospective cohort study combined with a qualitative evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Persons with dementia, their family/friend caregivers, and health systems agree that the preferred place of dementia care is a person's home. Health systems have struggled to provide sufficient community-based dementia care supports, negatively affecting the health and well-being of persons with dementia and their caregivers. Therefore, dementia care and support of dementia caregivers are critical public health priorities. Adult day programs aim to simultaneously support the health and well-being of persons with dementia and their caregivers, but research focusing on these day prog

The clinician's role in promoting resiliency for individuals and families with growth anomalies.

Some recent clinic and population-based studies suggest that severe short stature is not associated with significant behavioral and psychological problems, however collectively studies on this topic are variable and frequently contradictory. In light of these contradictory sources, it is important to recognize that there may be some children for whom growth failure is disabling. Many of such children can respond to counseling and support, but there may be occasions in which therapy can be recommended. Resiliency can be defined as a pattern of positive adaptation in the context of past or prese

Cardiac awake extracorporeal life support-bridge to decision?

Severe acute heart failure requires immediate intensive care unit (ICU) treatment, but prognosis and outcome of further treatment regimens largely depends on the preprocedural status of the patient. Especially, multiorgan failure including mechanical ventilation are unfavorable predictors of clinical outcome. Here, we report a strategy of immediate initiation of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) in awake and spontaneously breathing patients with acute heart failure to achieve early multiorgan recovery and gain sufficient time for further treatment planning. Twenty-three patients with severe c

An alternative animal model for perinatal carcinogenesis.

The differences in developmental biology between marsupials and eutherian animals provide alternative approaches to major problems in perina … n than its eutherian counterpart. The results of preliminary attempts to develop pre- and postnatal life support systems (embryo culture and an artificial marsupium) suggest the feasibility of further reducing maternal influence on the developing marsupial in order to enhance the utility of the model. Currently, the opossum and the marsupial mouse (Sminthopsis macrour …

Positioning palliative oncology in health care in Caribbean and Sub-Saharan African countries: Leveraging social and economic opportunities.

Each year, millions of people around the world experience serious health-related suffering from life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses and require palliative care. Palliative care is a human right to adequate and timely interventions for the well-being of patients with serious illnesses and their families. The World Health Assembly incorporated palliative care as a component of universal health care, reinforcing the World Health Organization's mandate to support governments in integrating the service into primary health care. Yet, fewer than half of the countries across the globe have re

Redefining flow measurement in centrifugal pump: the case for RPM and power consumption-based estimation.

Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices, particularly those utilizing centrifugal pumps (CP), are crucial in sustaining patients with severe cardiac conditions. Traditional flowmeters, integral to these systems, present considerable challenges, including substantial physical bulk, complex wiring, and a dependency on robust backup systems. These challenges become acute in portable applications, where compact, reliable, and discrete solutions are essential for enhancing patient mobility and quality of life. This paper proposes a strategic shift towards integrating RPM (Revolutions Per Minut

Moral universe of Muslim healthcare practitioners in the UK: balancing Islamic and secular ethics in palliative and end-of-life care.

In this paper, we evaluate the ethical challenges faced by Muslim healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in palliative and end-of-life care (P&EOLC) in the UK. Aiming to contribute to an empirical foundation on which ethical support systems for religious HCPs can be built, we compare Islamic moral frameworks with the secular ethics of the NHS (National Health Service) and assess how Muslim HCPs navigate the integration of both. This qualitative study includes 76 semistructured interviews with Muslim patients, family members and a variety of Muslim and non-Muslim palliative care providers. Maintaining a sense of normality with the help of others: Lived experiences of facilitators and barriers to Lupus adjustment.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has a high detrimental impact on individuals' quality of life. Identifying key factors associated with SLE adjustment is crucial for intervention development, yet there is no previous research exploring the perspectives of individuals with SLE regarding illness adjustment' facilitating or hindering factors. In this qualitative study, 16 individual semi-structured interviews with Portuguese adults with SLE (13 women) were conducted to explore perceived facilitators and barriers to illness adjustment. A reflexive thematic analysis revealed that efforts toward m

Hemodynamically unstable non-compressible penetrating torso trauma: a practical surgical approach.

Penetrating torso trauma is the second leading cause of death following head injury. Traffic accidents, falls and overall blunt trauma are the most common mechanism of injuries in developed countries; whereas, penetrating trauma which includes gunshot and stabs wounds is more prevalent in developing countries due to ongoing violence and social unrest. Penetrating chest and abdominal trauma have high mortality rates at the scene of the incident when important structures such as the heart, great vessels, or liver are involved. Current controversies surround the optimal surgical approach of these

Use of an In-Home Body Weight Support System by a Child With Spina Bifida.

PURPOSE: To examine the feasibility of a new open-area body weight support system (BWSS) to act as both an "assistive" and a "rehabilitative" device within the home. INTERVENTION: A 5-year-old boy with spina bifida used the BWSS during self-selected activities for 10 weeks. Feasibility, behavioral, and clinical assessments provided a quantification of his activity in and out of the BWSS. OUTCOMES: On average, the child used the device on 2.7 days/week and for 67 minutes/day during intervention. When in the BWSS (assistive role), the child's locomotor activity and engagement in adapted sports
