Primary liposarcomas of the mediastinum are extremely rare neoplasms, comprising less than 1% of all mediastinal tumors. These tumors occur most commonly in the lower extremities (75%) and less frequently in the retroperitoneum. We present a case involving a successful radical resection of a large myxoid liposarcoma and its recurrence, both located in the posterior mediastinum.

BACKGROUND: Liposarcoma is the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma (STS). It is divided into five groups according to histological pattern: well-differentiated, myxoid, round cell, pleomorphic, and dedifferentiated. Dedifferentiated liposarcoma most commonly occurs in the retroperitoneum, while an intraperitoneal location is extremely rare. Only seven cases have been reported in literature. Many pathologists recognize that a large number of intra-abdominal poorly differentiated sarcomas are dedifferentiated liposarcomas. We report a case initially diagnosed as undifferentiated sarcoma that

Paratesticular liposarcomas are rare and typically reported as isolated cases or as components of larger studies of liposarcomas. We studied a series of these tumors. All cases of paratesticular liposarcomas were retrieved from the archives of the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Slides were reviewed and clinical information obtained. There were 30 paratesticular liposarcomas from men aged 41-87 years (mean 63 years; median 65 years) that involved the spermatic cord (23, 76%), testicular tunics (6, 20%), and epididymis (1, 4%). Tumors ranged from 3 to 30 cm (mean 11.7 cm;

To determine diagnostic cytomorphologic features of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) materials, we reviewed the cytologic material and corresponding histologic slides of 95 tumors in 71 patients. Forty-four (46%) tumors were primary, 38 (40%) were recurrent, and 13 (14%) were metastatic. Histological variants of MFH were as follows: 52 (54.7%, 43 patients) were of the storiform/pleomorphic, seven (7.4%, five patients) were giant cells, four (4.2%, four patients) were inflammatory, and 31 (33.7%, 19 patients) were myxoid type. Review of original cytology repo

The authors present surgical therapy of liposarcoma in retroperitoneum. These mesenchymal tumors occur rarely in the population. The strategy for therapy requires determination of the relations to adjacent organs on the basis of precise preoperation examination of the patient. Surgery is considered as the basic therapy, provided radical extirpation of the tumor is possible. Our case report describes a huge liposarcoma in retroperitoneum with histology evolving from myxoid to low differentiated liposarcoma of retroperitoneum. The repeated relapse of the tumor was, as fart as possible, treated b

Liposarcomas are the most prevalent soft tissue sarcomas in adults. Low-grade liposarcomas are the most frequent and least aggressive and are noted as having a low risk of metastasis. We present a case of low-grade myxoid liposarcoma that metastasized to the small bowel resulting in intussusception. This case involves a 44-year-old woman with a recurrent retroperitoneal liposarcoma. Approximately 30 months after initial diagnosis, the patient was found to have a solitary metastasis to the small bowel that presented as a jejunal intussusception. Interestingly, there was no indication of a round

Sixty-one cases of neoplasms composed wholly or in part of atypical lipomatous tumor were reviewed. Minimum follow-up was 10 years. The cases were divided into 4 groups based on the findings in the initial excision specimen: conventional atypical lipomatous tumor (n=15), cellular atypical lipomatous tumor (n=21), dedifferentiated liposarcoma (n=24), and atypical lipomatous tumor with a pleomorphic liposarcoma-like component (n=1). The term "cellular atypical lipomatous tumor" was applied to atypical lipomatous tumors having areas of increased cellularity that when non-lipogenic lacked the 5 mi

Soft tissue sarcomas are a rare group of mesenchymal malignancies, with greater than 100 histologic subtypes. Advancements in understanding these subtypes has enabled histology-tailored management. This primer describes the workup and management of generalized soft tissue sarcomas of the extremity, trunk, and retroperitoneum while also highlighting the unique attributes of many subtypes. The subtypes chosen for review include those that are most common as well as those demonstrating unique behaviors or targets for management. The focus is on initial management of localized disease; however, fo

Liposarcoma rarely occurs in the pleura or thoracic cavity, and few reports appear in the literature. We hypothesized that combining clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and fluorescence in situ hybridization methods would allow definite diagnoses. Using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded blocks, we examined 6 atypical lipomatous tumor/well-differentiated liposarcomas (ALT/WDLPS), 5 dedifferentiated liposarcomas (DDLPSs), 2 pleomorphic liposarcomas, and 1 myxoid liposarcoma (MLPS). We used the Kaplan-Meier method and the Wilcoxon test for survival analysis for prognostic factor evaluation. H

The human hematopoietic progenitor cell antigen (CD34) recently was shown to react with a variety of nonhematopoietic tissues and their tumors, including vascular endothelium, dendritic interstitial fibroblastic cells, and endoneurial cells as well as with the neoplastic cells in a variety of mesenchymal neoplasms of unknown etiology, such as Kaposi's sarcoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, epithelioid sarcoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and solitary fibrous tumors. Additionally, it has been claimed that normal adipocytes may also react with this antibody. We studied a series of 90 lip

Liposarcomas are the most common soft tissue sarcoma primarily originating in deep soft tissues and the retroperitoneum. Sarcoma classification includes atypical lipomatous tumor/well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDL) and dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDL), myxoid liposarcoma, and pleomorphic liposarcoma. DDL is most prevalent in the retroperitoneum and often has two distinct components, a well-differentiated lipomatous component and a dedifferentiated nonlipomatous component that could be morphologically similar to malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) or fibrosarcoma. DDLs can undergo heterolo

BACKGROUND: Liposarcoma is a soft tissue sarcoma of adipocyte origin. Liposarcoma represents 20-30% of adult soft tissue tumors, which was most frequently seen in the retroperitoneal space in 45% and abdominal space in only 5% of cases, but the multicentric case is unknown. Herein, we describe a rare case of multicentric, large, intra-abdominal and retroperitoneal liposarcoma, one of which had caused infection and pressing the right ureter causing hydronephrosis, which was resected by two-stage surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 46-year-old man who was referred for abdominal bloati

A case of aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM) of the vulva is presented. The tumor presented as a slowly growing polypoid mass in the right labium minus near the clitoris. The tumor was treated by wide local excision. The microscopic appearance was that of spindle-shaped neoplastic cells widely separated by a loose myxoid stroma rich in collagen fibers, hyaluronic acid, and prominent irregular-shaped blood vessels. Aggressive angiomyxoma of the vulva must be distinguished from the more common benign and malignant myxoid tumors including myxoma, myxoid liposarcoma, myxoid variant of malignant fibrous …

Liposarcomas of the spermatic cord are extremely rare, with less than 200 cases in the literature. We present a case of sclerosing mixed with myxoid liposarcoma of the left spermatic cord in a 55-year-old male patient, mimicking an inguinal hernia on pre-operative ultrasound. The patient underwent orchidectomy and is currently on follow-up surveillance with no signs of recurrence.

Liposarcoma is one of the most common mesenchymal tumors, although liposarcomas that occur in the mediastinum are uncommon. We recently encountered a case of mediastinal well-differentiated liposarcoma with secondary myxoid changes and smooth muscle differentiation in a 54-year-old man. The patient reported a 20-day history of chest pain, and thorax computed tomography revealed a large and multilobulated mass with heterogeneous density in the posterior and anterior mediastinum, which extended to the right hemithorax. Resection was performed and a pathological analysis subsequently confirmed a

BACKGROUND: Liposarcoma is one of the most common adult soft tissue sarcomas, being second only to malignant fibrous histiocytoma. It ranges from the well-differentiated lipoma-like and myxoid tumors, to extremely cellular or pleomorphic malignant neoplasms. The clinical behavior is variable and reflects the variable microscopic picture.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinicopathological studies of liposarcoma in Saudi Arabia are lacking. In this study, we reviewed all liposarcoma cases reported at KFSH&RC from 1981 to 1996. Seventy-three cases of liposarcoma were studied morphologically. The cases we

Liposarcoma is one of the most common soft-tissue sarcomas in adults, but head and neck are rarely involved, especially regions of the larynx and hypopharynx. According to Enzinger and Weiss, liposarcoma can be divided into 5 subtypes: well-differentiated, myxoid, round cell, pleomorphic and dedifferentiated. We present an unusual case of well-differentiated liposarcoma of the hypopharynx in a patient with previous three procedures of endoscopic removal of hypopharyngeal tumor classified as benign lipoma. Well-differentiated liposarcoma is a tumor of low-grade malignancy, which frequently recu

We present a rare case of a mediastinal liposarcoma concomitant with aortic insufficiency due to myxoid degeneration of the aortic valve. Because the patient's left ventricle was in moderate dilatation and a posterolateral thoracotomy combined with median sternotomy was required in order to perform a complete resection of a mediastinal liposarcoma, it was decided to carry out aortic valve surgery and tumor excision in one operation.

The incidence of pediatric liposarcoma is rare and most published cases lack systematic genetic analyses. We present clinicopathologic and genetic features of 23 liposarcomas aged <22 years. The study cohort comprised 10 males and 13 females (M:F=1:1.3) aged 11-21 years (median 17 years). The tumors predominantly occurred at the extremities (16/23; 69.6%), followed by the head/neck (2/23; 8.7%), chest (2/23; 8.7%), waist (2/23, 8.7%), and retroperitoneum (1/23; 4.3%). The tumor subtypes were sixteen myxoid liposarcoma (ML), one well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDL), two dedifferentiated liposa
