At present, Bartonella species are increasingly important as infectious agents in both animals and humans. Bartonella henselae, the most frequently diagnosed species, is known to cause numerous clinical syndromes in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. In healthy individuals, the infection is most commonly manifested as the so-called cat scratch disease. The manifestations include erythema or papule at the point of entry of infection (site of injury) and regional lymphadenitis. The aim of the case report is to present the disease as one of possible causes of colliquative cervic…

We present a case of a cat-scratch disease (CSD) presenting with typical (primary lesion and regional lymphadenitis) and rare (purulent lymphadenitis and maculopapular rash) symptoms and positive epidemiological data. Laboratory blood test showed normal values for routine parameters, except for mild leukocytosis (L 12.4 x 10(9)), elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (SE 65/h) and moderately elevated asparta e-aminotransferase and alanine-aminotransferase values (AST/ALT 48/90), fibrinogen (5.3 g/L) and C-reactive protein (CRP 85 mg/L). Cytological analysis of lymph node content revealed gra…

Cat-scratch Disease as Cause of Lymphadenitis colli. Cat-scratch disease is a frequent cause of lymphadenitis colli. It mainly affects children and adolescents younger than 21 years. Since the clinical picture is not characteristic, a history of contact to cats or kittens is highly valuable for diagnosing the disease. Major aspects of the disease concerning epidemiology, diagnostic procedures, clinical presentation and therapy are discussed.

Tuberculosis abdominal lymphadenitis is rare and exceptionally revealed by digestive complications. We report one case of digestive stenosis due to duodenal external compression by tuberculosis lymph nodes. Surgical resection of periduodenal lymph nodes was performed without gastric resection or gastrointestinal anastomosis. Medical treatment of tuberculosis was successful and the patient remains asymptomatic.

UNLABELLED: Congenital tuberculosis is a rare disease. The risk of tuberculosis in pregnancy has increased owing to recent changes in the epidemiology of the disease, which have led to an increased risk of congenital tuberculosis. We present a case report on a 6-d-old premature infant with tuberculous lymphadenitis. Smears of the lymphatic tissue contained acid-fast bacilli, and cultures were positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis hominis. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay of the suppurative material of the lymph node was positive for M. tuberculosis. Twenty days before onset of labour, t…

A patient with pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC) during the course of her skin disease developed tuberculosis of cervical lymph nodes. Anti-tuberculosis treatment resulted in remission of PLC. Mycobacterium tuberculosis could be one of the triggering agent in pityriasis lichenoides.

The pathology of lymph nodes and subcutaneous nodules in 6 patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis (Oriental sore) due to Leishmania major is described in this paper. In 3 patients enlarged epitrochlear lymph nodes were found to be associated with primary skin lesions in the forearm. The lymph node in one patient showed a necrotizing granulomatous reaction that simulated tuberculous lymphadenitis. Leishmania parasites were, however, found in sections of the node, and staining for mycobacteria was negative. The second patient presented with an abscess and a discharging sinus in the epitrochlear r…

Distinctive microscopic findings in enlarged axillary lymph nodes removed during modified radical mastectomy in a 76-year-old woman with a previous ipsilateral total shoulder joint replacement are described. The sinuses of the lymph nodes were distended by numerous large macrophages that had abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm. Periodic acid-Schiff staining was positive, and polarization microscopy revealed birefringent particles of polyethylene. These findings were diagnostic of the reactive lymphadenopathy that is seen uncommonly in lymph nodes draining large joint prostheses.

BACKGROUND: Acute Myelomonocytic Leukemia (AMML) is a rare malignant neoplasm that is classified as a subtype of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). In the case described herein, the initial pathology results from a lymph node biopsy leaned towards Histiocytic Necrotizing Lymphadenitis, but ultimately, immunohistochemistry of the lymph node confirmed the diagnosis of Acute Myelomonocytic Leukemia.
METHODS: Cervical lymph node biopsy.
RESULTS: In this case, the initial pathological diagnosis after cervical lymph node biopsy favored histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis. However, immunohistochemical…

In immunocompromised patients, the rapid development of lymphadenopathy could pose a few diagnostic challenges. This is important, especially with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) which can manifest with the development of infections or may even progress with transformation into a more aggressive form of the disease. We report a case of a patient with CLL/SLL who presented with fever and worsening dyspnea as well as inguinal lymphadenopathy upon evaluation. The excisional biopsy of affected lymph nodes revealed herpes simplex virus lymphadenitis confirmed b…

We describe the case of a young boy with severe clinical symptoms which mimicked several findings consistent with a peritonsillar abscess (PTA). After the patient exhibited no improvement with medical management, imaging revealed an intramuscular medial pterygoid abscess secondary to parapharyngeal space lymphadenitis. This is the first reported case of a patient with a medial pterygoid abscess secondary to lymphadenitis. We also describe a minimally invasive surgical approach for incision and drainage of the abscess that has not previously been described in the literature.

Coccidioidomycosis (valley fever) is caused by the dimorphic fungi Coccidioides immitis or Coccidioides posadasii. Most infections are asymptomatic or result in self-limited pneumonia; extrapulmonary dissemination via either hematogenous or lymphatic spread is rare. Here, we present a case of cervical C. immitis lymphadenitis that resulted in fistula formation to the esophagus via mediastinal extension. This case highlights a very unusual extrapulmonary manifestation of coccidioidomycosis, the difficulty in diagnosing coccidioidal infection when it is not suspected, and the importance of obtai…

An inguinal lymph node was discovered incidentally during surgery for a suspected strangulated inguinal hernia. The patient had recently been treated for candidal balanoposthitis and was known to have a paraphimosis. A new foreskin ulcer was discovered when he was admitted for the hernia surgery. The lymph node histology showed stellate abscesses suggestive of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV). Chlamydial serologic tests were negative. As the histological appearance and clinical details provided were thought to suggest LGV, tissue was also sent for a real-time quadriplex polymerase chain reaction

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) to diagnose Tuberculous (TB) lymphadenitis with compare to excision biopsy and to correlate TB lymphadenitis with clinical, cytological, radiological and mantoux test features.
METHODS: This was a prospective correlational study. FNAC was done by a pediatrician for 135 children with persisting lymphadenitis after two weeks of antibiotic therapy in the period of January 2005 to June 2006 and compared with excision biopsy in a tertiary care hospital.
RESULTS: Forty Six cases (34.07%) were TB lymphadenitis diagnosed b…

We report a case of Kikuchi's disease (histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis) in a 22-year-old Japanese man who presented with cervical and axillary lymphadenopathy and who developed edema of lips with desquamation and erosions and transient indurated erythematous papules on the face, neck and upper extremities. A lymph node biopsy specimen showed the typical necrotizing lymphadenitis of Kikuchi's disease. A skin biopsy specimen showed a dense, lymphohistiocytic, superficial, deep perivascular, and interstitial infiltrate, papillary dermal edema, and abundant nuclear debris with a conspicuous …

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a form of necrotizing lymphadenitis. The disease is a usually benign, self limited cause of lymph node enlargement affecting predominantly young women. Several other clinical manifestations have been described, though the only consistent findings are a macular eruption and a fever. Occasionally, the disease has presented as a fever of unknown origin. Lymph node specimens show areas of necrosis without neutrophilic infiltration. Lymphocyte mediated apoptotic mechanisms are responsible for the necrosis observed. Clinically, it should be differentiated from many …
