Persistent focal enlargement after labiaplasty is commonly attributed to aesthetic under-resection or postoperative scar remodeling; however, disruption of superficial vulvar lymphatic pathways has not been well characterized as a potential contributor to postoperative contour abnormalities. We describe a clinicopathologic case of localized lymphatic channel dilation presenting as apparent recurrent labia minora hypertrophy following primary labiaplasty and propose an anatomically grounded, hypothesis-generating framework. A 16-year-old patient developed unilateral apical enlargement 90 days a

This case of a child presenting with severe acute respiratory failure requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation due to plastic bronchitis demonstrates the possibility of developing this rare condition despite having no known underlying inflammatory or lymphatic issues. The normal lymphatic anatomy and flow in our patient several weeks after the acute illness suggests a transient lymphatic flow abnormality possibly driven by the acute lower respiratory tract infection with human bocavirus-1 (HBoV1). As there are now four patients in the literature identified with Plastic bronchitis (PB) in

Lipoedema is a common but infrequently recognized condition causing bilateral enlargement of the legs in women. Although generally considered to be the result of an abnormal deposition of subcutaneous fat with associated oedema, the precise mechanisms responsible for oedema formation have yet to be fully established. In order to evaluate the possible role of lymphatic or venous dysfunction in the pathogenesis of lipoedema, 10 patients were investigated by photoplethysmography (venous function) and quantitative lymphoscintigraphy (lymphatic function). The results were compared with those from p

Renal lymphatic abnormalities are rare, and the understanding of pathophysiology involving renal lymphatics is limited. Symptoms can include hypertension, hematuria, proteinuria, chyluria, and abdominal and lumbar pain. Imaging techniques specific to the renal lymphatics have not been clarified. We review the intrahospital imaging evaluation/workup and clinical course of a 6-year-old male who presented to our institution with a large perirenal cyst. His presentation presented a diagnostic and management challenge. The cyst was determined to be lymphatic in origin and required multiple interven

Lymphatic flow abnormalities are central to the development of protein losing enteropathy, plastic bronchitis, ascites and pleural effusions in patients palliated to the Fontan circulation. These complications can occur in isolation or multicompartmental (two or more). The treatment of multicompartmental lymphatic failure aims at improving thoracic duct drainage. Re-routing the innominate vein to the pulmonary venous atrium decompresses the thoracic duct, as atrial pressure is lower than systemic venous pressure in Fontan circulation. Transcatheter thoracic duct decompression is a new minimall

OBJECTIVES: Owing to its structural and anatomic characteristics, imaging of the lymphatic system has been difficult. The conventional diagnostic method of radionuclide-based imaging has the disadvantage of poor resolution. Recent work has shown that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can depict lymphatic channels in patients with lymphedema. This study evaluated the anatomic and functional images of contrast MR lymphangiography in the diagnosis of limb lymphatic circulation disorders.
METHODS: The study enrolled 27 patients with primary lymphedema. Four patients had bilateral disease, and 23 h

Lymphatic disease results from abnormal perfusion of lymph to various compartments such as the peritoneum, duodenum and the pleural space. However, this often occurs concurrently with congenital heart disease, especially single ventricle congenital heart disease. By understating the physiologic principles of the lymphatic and circulatory system and how this can be impacted by congenital heart disease, one can appreciate the pathophysiology of lymphatic disease in the setting of congenital heart disease.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate anatomical and functional images of contrast MR lymphangiography in the diagnosis of limb lymphatic circulation disorders.
METHODS: 30 patients with limb lymphedema were enrolled in the study. There were 27 patients of primary lymphedema and 3 of secondary lymphedema. Contrast enhanced lymphangiography was performed with 3.0 T MR Unit after intracutaneous injection of gadobenate dimeglumine into the interdigital webs of the dorsal foot and hand. The kinetics of enhanced lymph flow within the lymphatics were calculated using the formula: Speed (cm) = total length of visu

Cardio-facio-cutaneous (CFC) syndrome is one of the 'RASopathies', a group of phenotypically overlapping syndromes caused by germline mutations that encode components of the RAS-MAPK pathway. Germline mutations in BRAF cause CFC syndrome, which is characterized by heart defects, distinctive facial features and ectodermal abnormalities. To define the pathogenesis and to develop a potential therapeutic approach in CFC syndrome, we here generated new knockin mice (here Braf(Q241R/+)) expressing the Braf Q241R mutation, which corresponds to the most frequent mutation in CFC syndrome, Q257R. Lipiodol-based lymphangiography is not only a diagnostic tool for visualization of lymphatic disorders such as plastic bronchitis (PB), but also aims a therapeutic effect by embolizing lymph leakages. We performed such percutaneous lymphatic embolization for PB in a Fontan patient with proven absence of right-to-left shunt, and demonstrated important lymphatic abnormalities in the mediastinum. Shortly after the procedure, the patient developed severe convulsive seizures, revealing multiple cerebral embolisms of Lipiodol. Radiological images were impressive, yet the clinical neurological outcom

Lymphedema is the edema that results from chronic lymphatic insufficiency. Lymphatic filariasis is caused by the filarial nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori. Lymphatic filariasis is common in tropical and subtropical regions. Early diagnosis and prompt therapy can be implemented using lymphoscintigraphy. Our patient is a 15-year-old boy presenting with a 3-month history of hydrocele. The patient was referred to us to rule out any lower limb lymphatic obstruction as the patient is from an endemic area. Tc Sulfur colloid (filtered) lymphoscintigraphy showed abnormal

Renal lymphangiomatosis is a disease characterized by abnormal formation of perirenal lymphatic vessels that fail to communicate with other retroperitoneal lymphatics; as a result, perirenal lymphatics dilate and form cysts. While typically an asymptomatic incidental finding, renal lymphangiomatosis rarely presents as flank or abdominal pain, ascites, impaired renal function, hypertension, hematuria, or proteinuria. Here we present the first known case of renal lymphangiomatosis found to spontaneously resolve following cardiac transplantation.

Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia (PIL) is a rare protein-losing gastroenteropathy characterized by diffuse or localized ectasia of the enteric lymphatics, which can be accompanied by lymphatic abnormalities in other parts of the body. This condition results in hypoalbuminemia, hypogammaglobulinemia, and lymphopenia due to the abnormal leakage of lymphatic fluid into the gastrointestinal tract. As there are no specific serological or radiological tests available, the gold standard for diagnosing intestinal lymphangiectasia is endoscopic examination with histopathological examination of intes

Disorders of the pulmonary lymphatic system include macro- and microcystic lymphatic malformations, primary or secondary lymphangiectasias, generalized lymphatic anomalies, diffuse pulmonary lymphangiomatosis, and combinations of lymphatic and other tissue anomalies, including lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). We report a case of a patient with a newly defined entity classified as kaposiform lymphangiomatosis (KLA). This 50-year-old nonsmoking Hispanic woman presented with a 20-year history of cough, hemoptysis, chyloptysis, and pleuritic chest pain. Laboratory evaluation demonstrated a low norm

Lymphatic vasculature is a network of capillaries and vessels capable of draining extracellular fluid back to blood circulation and to facilitate immune cell migration. Although the role of the lymphatic vasculature as coordinator of fluid homeostasis has been extensively studied, the consequences of abnormal lymphatic vasculature function and impaired lymph drainage have been mostly unexplored. Here, by using the Prox1+/- mice with defective lymphatic vasculature and lymphatic leakage, we provide evidence showing that lymph leakage induces an immunosuppressive environment by promoting anti-in

Lymphangioma circumscriptum (LC) results from the development of abnormal lymphatic vasculature and is characterized by the presence of grouped vesicles filled with clear or colored fluid. Vulvar localization is uncommon. Abnormalities of the lymphatic system, such as lymphedema and cystic hygroma, are well-known features of genetic disorders such as Noonan syndrome (NS) and Turner syndrome. We report the case of a patient with NS who presented with LC of the vulva. We also discuss the expanding spectrum of clinical anomalies associated with the presentation of NS.

The lymphatic system maintains tissue fluid balance, and FOXC2 mutations cause lymphoedema-distichiasis syndrome, which is characterized by lymphatic valve defects. Although oscillatory shear stress regulates FOXC2 expression, other extracellular regulators remain unclear. In this study, we identified LPA4 and LPA6, two Gα12/Gα13-coupled receptors for the bioactive lipid lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), as key regulators of FOXC2 expression and lymphatic valve development. Lymphatic endothelial cell-specific (LEC-specific) Lpa4 Lpa6-deficient mice exhibited impaired lymphatic valve formation and m

Normal growth and development of lymphatic structures depends on mechanical forces created by accumulating interstitial fluid. However, prolonged exposure to pathologic mechanical stimuli generated by chronically elevated lymph flow results in lymphatic dysfunction. The mechanisms that transduce these mechanical forces are not fully understood. Our objective was to investigate molecular mechanisms that alter the growth and metabolism of isolated lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) exposed to prolonged pathologically elevated lymph flow in vivo within the anatomic and physiologic context of a la
