Accurate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of microvascular occlusive diseases, exemplified by subsegmental pulmonary embolism (SSPE), remains a clinical challenge because of the intrinsic limitations of clinically available Gd-based small molecular contrast agents (CAs). Ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles (USIOs)-based CAs have emerged as promising alternatives, offering adjustable MRI T1 relaxivity, favorable pharmacokinetics, and high biocompatibility; however, their performance is critically hampered by inefficient atomic utilization for MR T1 relaxivity enhancement. Herein, we report Mg-d

Nanoparticles can be divided into several different classes. Within these classes, iron oxide-based nanoparticles exhibiting superparamagnetic properties occupy a special place because, in contrast to a majority of organic nanoparticles, they are magnetically accumulable and can be visualized in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the course of extensive research over several years, the Section for Experimental Oncology and Nanomedicine (SEON) at the University Hospital of Erlangen has developed and fabricated superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPION) termed SEONDex30. These particle

A 69-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to our hospital with progressive muscle weakness and dysphagia. She was taking pitavastatin for dyslipidemia. Her serum creatine kinase was 6,300 U/L. Pitavastatin was stopped, but her symptoms deteriorated, and cardiac congestion appeared. A muscle biopsy showed necrotizing myopathy (NM), and anti-signal recognition particle (SRP) antibody was positive. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography showed an abnormal uptake, and magnetic resonance imaging showed abnormal gadolinium enhancement in the left ventricular wall. An endomyocardial biop

Neural progenitor cells (NPCs) reside within the subventricular zone (SVZ) in rodents. These NPCs give rise to neural precursors in adults that migrate to the olfactory bulb (OB) along a well-defined pathway, the rostral migratory stream (RMS). Here we demonstrate that these NPCs can be labeled, in vivo, in adult rats with fluorescent, micron-sized iron oxide particles (MPIOs), and that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect migrating neural precursors carrying MPIOs along the RMS to the OB. Immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy indicated that particles were inside GFAP(+) neural p

BACKGROUND: A unique feature of inline MRI-linac prototype systems is the changes to entry surface or skin doses. For the high field (1 T) Australian MRI-linac prototype, a strong surface dose increase is observed. This is a by-product of secondary electron contamination being focused down the MRI bore due to the magnetic field being parallel with the x-ray beam direction. It has been anticipated that future clinical treatments will utilize a 2 cm thick water equivalent bolus layer in air above the patient's skin to absorb the electron contamination that causes the large dose hot spot. However

The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE), the differential reflection of oppositely circularly polarized light, has traditionally been associated with relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which links a particle's spin with its orbital motion. In ferromagnets, large MOKE signals arise from the combination of magnetization and SOC, while in certain coplanar antiferromagnets, SOC-induced Berry curvature enables MOKE despite zero net magnetization. Theoretically, large MOKE can also arise in a broader class of magnetic materials with compensated spins, without relying on SOC - for example, in sys

The purpose of this article is to give a summary of the progress of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in radiotherapy. MRI is an important imaging modality for treatment planning in radiotherapy. However, the registration step with the simulation scanner can be a source of errors, motivating the implementation of all-MRI simulation methods and new accelerators coupled with on-board MRI. First, practical MRI imaging for radiotherapy is detailed, but also the importance of a coherent imaging workflow incorporating all imaging modalities. Second, future evolutions and research domains such as quan

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Although the presence of a foreign body in the cranium after a head injury is a well-known entity, cases of retained intracranial foreign bodies causing a delayed onset of neurological symptoms are rare. To our knowledge, an unrecognized intracerebral glass particle mimicking a cavernoma has not been previously reported in the literature.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We report a unique case regarding an intracranial foreign body. A 39-year-old patient presented with new-onset epilepsy. The patient had no history of trauma. According to the magnetic resonance imaging findin

Currently, the low survival rate and poor prognosis of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma are ascribed to the lack of early and accurate diagnosis and resistance to radiotherapy. In parallel, the integration of imaging-guided diagnosis and precise treatment has gained much attention in the field of theranostic nanotechnology. However, constructing dual-modal imaging-guided nanotheranostics with desired imaging performance as well as great biocompatibility remains challenging. Therefore, we developed a simple but multifunctional nanotheranostic GdCPP for the early and accurate diagnosis and

Identification of patients with high-risk asymptomatic carotid plaques remains a challenging but essential step in stroke prevention. Current selection criteria for intervention in carotid disease are still determined by symptomatology and degree of luminal stenosis. This strategy has been less effective in identifying the high-risk asymptomatic individual patients. Inflammation is the key factor that drives plaque instability causing clinical sequelae. Currently, there is no imaging tool in routine clinical practice to assess the inflammatory status within atherosclerotic plaques. Herein we d

Continuous advancements in noninvasive imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have greatly improved our ability to study physiological or pathological processes in living organisms. MRI is also proving to be a valuable tool for capturing transplanted cells in vivo. Initial cell labeling strategies for MRI made use of contrast agents that influence the MR relaxation times (T1, T2, T2*) and lead to an enhancement (T1) or depletion (T2*) of signal where labeled cells are present. T2* enhancement agents such as ultrasmall iron oxide agents (USPIO) have been employed to study c

The intricate anatomical and physiological barriers that prohibit pharmaceuticals from entering the brain continue to provide a noteworthy hurdle to the efficient distribution of medications to brain tissues. These barriers prevent the movement of active therapeutic agents into the brain. The present manuscript aims to describe the various aspects of brain-targeted drug delivery through the nasal route. The primary transport mechanism for drug absorption from the nose to the brain is the paracellular/extracellular mechanism, which allows for rapid drug transfer. The transcellular/intracellular
