A representative sample of 55 mainstreamed 9-10-year-olds with hemiplegia were compared with all classmates on sociometric measures of popularity and friendship, and with 55 matched controls on measures of victimization. Children with hemiplegia were more rejected and less popular, had fewer friends, and were more often victimized; they were not more likely to be bullies themselves. These differences were not fully accounted for by group differences in teacher-estimated IQ and behaviour. Developmental dyscalculia (DC) is a primary cognitive disorder of childhood manifested by disturbance of arithmetic ability. The smoking behaviour of 665 children aged 12-15 years with special educational needs was compared with that of a control group of 842 children in mainstream education. Parent views of specific language impairment have received little attention in the literature, even though speech and language development is the single greatest area of concern for parents. This article examines parental views of events up to, and including, language unit admission for their children. A series of qualitative interviews was conducted with parents. BACKGROUND: It can hardly be disputed that a school environment should be conducive or, at the very least, not prohibitive to effective learning. The provision of fair, equal and barrier-free access to education is referred to as inclusive education. South Africa supports a policy of inclusive schooling, striving to accommodate all children, including those with disabilities, in mainstream schools.
