Burning-feet syndrome. Case due to malabsorption and responding to riboflavine.

A woman with the burning-feet syndrome was found on investigation to have malabsorption. The syndrome responded rapidly to intramuscular injections of 6 mg. of riboflavine daily. It is suggested that deficiency of this substance, due to malabsorption and aggravated by a defective diet and repeated pregnancies, was responsible for the syndrome in this case.

Parathyroid adenomas associated with the malabsorption syndrome and chronic renal disease.

The pathology of the parathyroid glands in two cases in which hyperparathyroidism was associated with chronic renal disease and 10 in which the association was with the malabsorption syndrome is described. It is concluded that whereas in chronic renal disease the development of an autonomous adenoma may be preceded by anatomical secondary diffuse hyperplasia such a stage is not proven when the adenomas develop against a background of the malabsorption syndrome. The importance of this latter association is stressed.

Fat malabsorption in short bowel syndrome: A review of pathophysiology and management.

Fat malabsorption is central to the pathophysiology of short bowel syndrome (SBS). It occurs in patients with insufficient intestinal surface area and/or function to maintain metabolic and growth demands. Rapid intestinal transit and impaired bile acid recycling further contribute to fat malabsorption. A significant portion of patients require parenteral nutrition (PN) for their survival but may develop sepsis and liver dysfunction as a result. Despite advancements in the treatment of SBS, fat malabsorption remains a chronic issue for this vulnerable patient population. Peer-reviewed literatur

Symptomatic fructose malabsorption in irritable bowel syndrome: A prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Fructose can trigger or worsen symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of symptomatic fructose malabsorption in IBS patients and to test whether the patient's characteristics can help to detect a fructose malabsorption. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety Rome III IBS patients (predominant diarrhoea (IBS-D): 31%, predominant constipation (IBS-C): 18%, mixed type (IBS-M): 51%) were included prospectively. After exclusion of a small intestinal bacterial overgrowth by a glucose breath test, fructose malabsorption was asse

Malabsorption syndrome due to various causes is associated with antroduodenal hypomotility.

BACKGROUND: Patients with celiac disease who present with symptoms of gastrointestinal hypomotility have abnormal antroduodenal manometry. There are no data on antroduodenal manometry in malabsorption syndrome (MAS) due to causes other than celiac disease. METHODS: Fasting, post-prandial and post-octreotide antroduodenal motility parameters were compared in 18 untreated patients with MAS presenting with chronic diarrhea (tropical sprue 10, small bowel bacterial overgrowth 3, celiac disease 2, common variable immunodeficiency 1, AIDS with isosporidiasis and bacterial overgrowth 1, giardiasis 1

Probiotic lactobacilli: an innovative tool to correct the malabsorption syndrome of vegetarians?

Vegetarians may have subtle nutritional deficiencies which have been related to the occurrence of an unrecognized malabsorption syndrome. The excess phytate content in cereals, nuts, legumes and oilseeds which represent the mainstay of their food intake, seems to play a central role in the pathogenesis of this malabsorption syndrome as an inverse relationship has been shown to link the phytate content of the diet with the intestinal absorption of trace minerals and proteins. We postulate that manipulating the endogenous digestive microflora of subjects on a vegetarian diet through administerin

Digestive utilization of goat and cow milk fat in malabsorption syndrome.

We studied the effects of goat and cow milk fat on the digestive utilization of this nutrient and on some of the biochemical parameters that are related to the metabolisim of lipids, using rats with a resection of 50% of the distal small intestine and control animals (transected). The fat content in all the diets was 10% but the lipid quality was varied: the standard diet was based on olive oil, while the other two diets included fat obtained from lyophilized goat milk and cow milk, respectively. The digestive utilization of the fat was lower in the resected animals than in the transected ones

[Biopsy examinations of small intestinal mucosa in malabsorption syndrome of childhood].

The results of bioptic mucosal specimens examination are discussed. Samples of the small intestine were collected from 211 children with malabsorption syndrome of various etiology such as cow milk protein intolerance, gluten intolerance, spontaneous diarrhoea and other. The results obtained with microscopic examination scored with Shmerling scale were compared with those of light microscopic examination of histological preparations. The difficulties connected with proper sampling and handling of the bioptic specimen are discussed. Technical errors very often are the cause of the diagnostic fai

Measurement of the 10,000-molecular weight calcium-binding protein in small-intestinal biopsy specimens from patients with malabsorption syndromes.

Calcium-binding protein (CaBP) (molecular weight, 10,000) was measured in small-intestinal biopsy specimens from 36 patients with malabsorption syndromes: short-bowel syndrome (n = 13), untreated coeliac disease (n = 4), coeliac disease in remission (n = 7), patients with intestinal bypass owing to morbid obesity (n = 5), and in patients with chronic diarrhoea of unknown cause (n = 7). Twelve patients with no signs of malabsorption who had the irritable bowel syndrome were used as controls. Patients with small-bowel resections showed reduced concentrations of CaBP (p less than 0.01) and low in…
