Survival rates are higher in married patients with biliary tract cancer: a population-based study.

Marital status has been identified as a prognostic factor in multiple malignancies. In this study, we assessed the prognostic value of marital status in 24,035 patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database diagnosed with biliary tract cancer (BTC) between 2004 and 2014. Widowed patients were more likely to be women, elderly (> 60 years), have gallbladder cancer, and have localized SEER Stage disease than all other patients. Marital status was identified as an independent prognostic factor in both univariate and multivariate analyses, and cause-specific survival (CSS) r

Marital and sexual satisfaction in patients with RA and their spouses.

This study sets out to determine predictors of marital and sexual satisfaction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and their spouses. Fifty-nine patients and their spouses completed questionnaires independent from each other. Multiple correlations with marital and sexual satisfaction were computed for demographic variables, disease status, psychological distress, and social support. The results indicate that psychological distress and social support are more important than objectively assessed disease status in determining marital and sexual satisfaction in patients with RA.

Marital Failure and Subsequent Heart Failure: A Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Loss of a stable spousal relationship has been associated with a high risk of morbidity and premature death, yet there is limited evidence on the association between marital failure and the risk of subsequent heart failure (HF). We examined the association between marital failure and the risk of subsequent HF in large prospective studies. METHODS: This cohort study utilized data from Kailuan Study I and Kailuan Study II. Marital status was assessed through multiple self-reports. HF cases were identified via biennial interviews, hospital records, social insurance, and death registr

Interpersonal conflict as a predictor of work disability: a follow-up study of 15,348 Finnish employees.

This 6-year follow-up study investigates the impact of interpersonal conflict at work on work disability among 8,021 male and 7,327 female employees aged 24 to 65 years at baseline. Marital status, marital conflict, monotonous work, hectic work pace, hostility, neuroticism, life dissatisfaction, and experienced stress of daily activities were included in survival analyses, which were adjusted for age, social status, and general health status. Interpersonal conflict at work predicted work disability only among women (RR 1.56, CL 1.01-2.39). This risk was confined to women who reported simultane

Who is at Risk? Social Support, Relationship Dissolution, and Illness in a Rural Context.

This study focuses on a cohort of adults (40-plus) in rural South Africa to unpack associations between physical health and receipt of social support, and the extent to which these associations were moderated by marital status. We use logistic regression to estimate the odds of having received emotional, physical, or financial support separately for men (N = 2247) and women (N = 2609). Our results suggest having an Activity of Daily Living (ADL) limitation or having at least one chronic condition was not significantly associated with social support receipt for women, but having an ADL limitati

The impact of surgery and age on mortality with primary trachea malignant tumors: a retrospective study based on propensity-score matching analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the survival significance of surgery and age on the prognosis of patients with primary trachea malignancies. METHODS: The entire cohort of 637 patients with primary malignant trachea tumors was used to perform the main analyses. The data of those patients were from a public database. Overall survival (OS) curves were drawn by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared by the Log-rank test. The univariable and multivariable Cox regression analyses calculated the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for overall mortality. The propensity-score matchin

Contributions of sociodemographic factors to criminal behavior.

We explored the extent to which prisoner sociodemographic variables (age, education, marital status, employment, and whether their parents were married or not) influenced offending in 64 randomly selected Brunei inmates, comprising both sexes. A quantitative field survey design ideal for the type of participants used in a prison context was employed to investigate the problem. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis with backward elimination identified prisoner marital status and age groups as significantly related to offending. Furthermore, hierarchical multinomial logistic regression analy

Personality in torticollis: a controlled study.

The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, the trait scales of the Leyton Obsessional Inventory, the Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory, and a questionnaire assessing marital status and harmony were completed by 100 torticollis patients and a control group of 49 cervical spondylosis sufferers. Information regarding employment status, and events preceding onset of their complaint was also obtained. The two groups did not differ in terms of any of the personality dimensions evaluated, or in their self-reports of events prior to onset of their illness. The groups differed significantly with re

Associations Between Divorce Histories and Unhealthy Alcohol Use Among Middle Aged and Older Adults.

Background: Unhealthy alcohol use has been considered a coping strategy related to stressful and traumatic life events such as relationship loss. Yet, the effects of marital status on health behaviors are generally studied cross-sectionally or over one transition. We explored associations between the frequency and quantity of alcohol use with the number of episodes and duration of separation/divorce events across adulthood among English adults in mid to later life. Methods: This study used life history data from wave 3 (2006/07) of the English Longitudinal Study of Aging to compute marital seq

Does marital conflict predict infants' physiological regulation? A short-term prospective study.

Prior research has linked marital conflict to children's internalizing/externalizing disorders, insecure attachment, and poor emotional regulation (e.g., Cummings & Davies, 2010; Cummings, Iannotti, & Zahn-Waxler, 1985). Although investigators have examined the impact of marital discord on older children (e.g., Crockenberg & Langrock, 2001), few have explored direct links in infancy (e.g., Cowan & Cowan, 1999). This study extends earlier work by examining linkages between marital functioning (conflict and harmony) and infants' cardiac vagal tone and developmental status across 2 time points us

Cohort differences in the marriage-health relationship for midlife women.

The present study aimed to identify potential cohort differences in midlife women's self-reported functional limitations and chronic diseases. Additionally, we examined the relationship between marital status and health, comparing the health of divorced, widowed, and never married women with married women, and how this relationship differs by cohort. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), we examined potential differences in the level of functional limitations and six chronic diseases in two age-matched cohorts of midlife women in the United States: Pre-Baby Boomers, born 1933-
