Maternal mortality in Ontario from 1970 to 1980.

This review describes trends in maternal mortality in Ontario, Canada during 1970 to 1980 inclusive. There has been a significant decline in the total and direct deaths recorded. Anesthetic complications, hemorrhage, obstetric sepsis, and non-obstetric infections are now rare causes of maternal mortality. Toxemia and emboli remain major components of direct obstetric deaths. Collagen vascular disease, cardiac disease, pulmonary emboli, and cerebrovascular accidents are consistently found as causes of indirect maternal deaths.

Maternal Early Obstetric Warning System (MEOWS) as a Predictor of Maternal Morbidity and Mortality.

Background Maternal morbidity and mortality remain significant public health concerns, particularly in resource-limited settings. Early warning score systems, such as the Maternal Early Obstetric Warning System (MEOWS), have been recommended to facilitate the timely recognition of clinical deterioration in obstetric patients. This study evaluates the utility of MEOWS in predicting maternal morbidity and mortality in a tertiary care center in India. Objectives To determine whether MEOWS "track-and-trigger" charts can serve as an effective bedside screening tool to predict obstetric morbidity an

Changing trends in maternal mortality in a developing country.

OBJECTIVE: To have a 5-year review of the maternal mortality ratio in the largest centrally located Mission hospital in Benin City where a large proportion of women deliver yearly. METHOD: This was a 5-year (January 1, 1996 through December 31, 2000) review of the causes of maternal mortality at the Saint Philomena Catholic Hospital, Benin City. The case notes of those that suffered maternal mortality were retrieved and thoroughly perused. Information on all cases of maternal mortality were extracted from the patients' case-notes; the labour ward Registers; the antenatal, postnatal, the femal…

Maternal mortality as an indicator of obstetric care in Europe.

OBJECTIVE: This analysis considers the usefulness of maternal mortality ratio (MMR) as an indicator of obstetric care in the context of low overall maternal mortality. We explore whether variation in the level of MMR among European countries reflects differences in obstetric care. DESIGN: The data presented in this article were collected as part of the European Concerted Action on Mothers' Mortality and Severe morbidity (MOMS). In this study, a panel of experts followed a protocol to determine cause of death and whether it was pregnancy-related. This analysis uses the expert panel's confirmat…

[The reduction in maternal mortality in Chile, 1990-2000].

OBJECTIVE: To determine if Chile achieved the objective of reducing maternal mortality by 50% between 1990 and 2000, in line with the provisions of the Regional Plan of Action for the Reduction of Maternal Mortality in the Americas, which the governments of the Americas approved in 1990 at the 23rd Pan American Sanitary Conference. METHODS: A descriptive, observational study was designed, making it possible to analyze the trend in maternal mortality in Chile from 1990 through 2000. The variables that were evaluated were the maternal mortality ratio, the causes of death, and the age of the mot…

[Surveillance system of maternal mortality in the Tunis region].

In the framework of a national strategy of reduction of the maternal mortality rate. Tunisia has set up a follow up system of maternal deaths occurring in public facilities to analyse their causes, the levels of deficiency and to propose solutions for preventing them. This note aims at describing the system, its results, its efficiency and its limitations in the Tunis region for the years 1999 and 2000. The results show a maternal mortality rate estimated at 80 for 100,000 births in public facilities of the region: the main causes being haemorrhage (42.1%) followed by infection (13.2%). The pr…

Impact of mode of delivery on maternal mortality in eclampsia.

Determinants of maternal mortality and causes of death pertaining to mode of delivery have been discussed. There were 23 deaths (case fatality rate of 7.2%) and maximum deaths occurred in intrapartum eclampsia (12 ie, 52.17%). Caesarean section was performed in 92 cases (28.7%) of which 4 women died (4.3%). Maternal mortality in cases who delivered vaginally was 7.1% (16 out of 225) and 3 cases died undelivered. Authors feel that at the referral centres early caesarean section in eclampsia may help in reducing maternal mortality.

Maternal mortality in the Thyolo District of southern Malawi.

The Sisterhood Method, a community-based survey technique, was used to estimate the Life Time Risk of a woman dying a maternal death in Southern Malawi. With this figure, the maternal mortality ratio for that area was calculated to be 409 deaths per 100,000 live births. The 4124 adults interviewed reported 150 maternal deaths in sisters. An in-depth questionnaire was then used to determine that 56% of these deaths occurred outside a health facility, largely due to lack of transportation or poor access to fixed health care facilities; 25% died from excessive hemorrhage; 20% from obstructed labo…

Maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in cesarean section.

Maternal mortality rates after cesarean delivery are low, but cesarean section is more hazardous than vaginal delivery by a factor of two to four. Operative complications can be minimized by careful technique and are more often seen in emergency than elective cases. Prophylactic antibiotics are of some benefit in reducing postoperative endometritis in patients with risk factors. Cesarean birth rarely causes the death of a newborn. Nevertheless, significant newborn pulmonary problems, especially respiratory distress syndrome, may follow an inappropriately timed cesarean delivery. Careful attent…

Prevalence of Severe Maternal Morbidity and Factors Associated With Maternal Mortality in Ontario, Canada.

IMPORTANCE: Severe maternal morbidity is defined by potentially life-threatening conditions. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study used provincial databases for data on all live birth and stillbirth hospital deliveries among women in Ontario, Canada, from April 1, 2002, to February 18, 2017.
