Observer-Based Source Localization in Tree Infection Networks via Laplace Transforms.

We address the problem of localizing the source of infection in an undirected, tree-structured network under a susceptible-infected outbreak model. The infection propagates with independent random time increments (i.e., edge-delays) between neighboring nodes, while only the infection times of a subset of nodes can be observed. We show that a reduced set of observers may be sufficient, in the statistical sense, to localize the source and characterize its identifiability via the joint Laplace transform of the observers' infection times. Using the explicit form of these transforms in terms of the

On Modeling Ovarian Aging and Menopause Timing.

Mathematical modeling of ovarian aging and menopause timing has a long history, dating back a half-century to the models of Nobel Prize winner Robert G. Edwards. More recently, such models have been used to investigate clinical interventions for women, which underscores the importance of scientific rigor in model development and analysis. In this paper, we analyze a recent model published in the biophysics literature. We first correct an error which invalidates claims about menopause age in different populations. We then use stochastic analysis to show how this model is a reparameterization of

Number-action mapping in human newborns.

Humans' ability to link sensory signals across different modalities and dimensions is functional from birth. Moreover, they form expectations of congruent magnitude changes across dimensions such as number, spatial extent, and temporal duration, anticipating that increases (or decreases) in one dimension will be matched by similar changes in another. Here, we investigated whether newborns can also map numerical magnitude onto action-related information-specifically, hand aperture amplitude-a form of mapping previously observed in adults, children, and infants, but not yet studied at birth. A Theoretical Framework to Quantify the Tradeoff Between Individual and Population Benefits of Expanded Antibiotic Use.

The use of antibiotics during a disease outbreak presents a critical tradeoff between immediate treatment benefits to the individual and the long-term risk to the population. Typically, the extensive use of antibiotics has been thought to increase selective pressures, leading to resistance. This study explores scenarios where expanded antibiotic treatment can be advantageous for both individual and population health. We develop a mathematical framework to assess the impacts on outbreak dynamics of choosing to treat moderate infections not treated under current guidelines, focusing on cholera a

The Post-Kelly Strategy: A Negative Feedback Model of Reallocating Ant Foragers.

In ant foraging, the manner of group-mass recruitment demonstrates remarkable adaptability between tandem running and mass recruitment. In contrast to tandem running, where a leader recruits only one worker, the first phase of group-mass recruitment is characterized by strong invitations from leaders that result in a large group of recruits leaving the nest together in a rush, thereby accelerating the process of recruiting towards discovered resources. Furthermore, unlike sole mass recruitment, the influence of leaders during this first phase enhances the accuracy of information about food qua

Ex Vivo Experiments Shed Light on the Innate Immune Response from Influenza Virus.

The innate immune response is recognized as a key driver in controlling an influenza virus infection in a host. However, the mechanistic action of such innate response is not fully understood. Infection experiments on ex vivo explants from swine trachea represent an efficient alternative to animal experiments, as the explants conserved key characteristics of an organ from an animal. In the present work we compare three cellular automata models of influenza virus dynamics. The models are fitted to free virus and infected cells data from ex vivo swine trachea experiments. Our findings suggest th

A Multiscale Mathematical Model of Plasmodium Vivax Transmission.

Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites which are transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. Plasmodium vivax is distinct from other malaria species in its ability to remain dormant in the liver (as hypnozoites) and activate later to cause further infections (referred to as relapses). Mathematical models to describe the transmission dynamics of P. vivax have been developed, but most of them fail to capture realistic dynamics of hypnozoites. Models that do capture the complexity tend to involve many governing equations, making them difficult to extend to incorporate

Modeling the 2014-2015 Ebola Virus Disease Outbreaks in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia with Effect of High- and Low-risk Susceptible Individuals.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a rare but fatal disease of humans and other primates caused by Ebola viruses. Study shows that the 2014-2015 EVD outbreak causes more than 10,000 deaths. In this paper, we propose and analyze a deterministic model to study the transmission dynamics of EVD in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. Our analyses show that the model has two equilibria: (1) the disease-free equilibrium (DFE) which is locally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number ([Formula: see text]) is less than unity and unstable if it is greater than one, and (2) an endemic equilibriu

HOLISTIC APPROACH TO THE IMMUNOBIOLOGY OF AGING (VIEW ON THE TURN OF MILLENIUM).

Among many functions of the body affected by the complex process of aging, the immune system, primarily due to declining of thymic function, the ancient and conserved evolutionary process, undergoes complex remodelling in the second part of life, with recapitulation of inversely evolutionary pattern of the immune system. In approaching the complex analysis of age-associated derangement of the immune system, homeostasis, and its clinical consequences, classical monoclonal lymphoproliferative syndrome (CLL) accompanied by a myriad of cellular and humoral defects, has been selected as appropriate

The use of automated procedures by older adults with high arithmetic skills during addition problem solving.

In contrast to other cognitive abilities, arithmetic skills are known to be preserved in healthy elderly adults. In fact, they would even outperform young adults because they more often retrieve arithmetic facts from long-term memory. Nevertheless, we suggest here that the superiority of older over younger adults could also stem from the use of more efficient automated and unconscious counting procedures. We tested 35 older participants using the sign priming paradigm and selected the 18 most efficient ones, aged from 60 to 77. Sign priming is interpreted as the indicator of the preactivation

Analysing the dynamics of a model for alopecia areata as an autoimmune disorder of hair follicle cycling.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a CD8$^{+}$ T cell-dependent autoimmune disease that disrupts the constantly repeating cyclic transformations of hair follicles (HFs). Among the three main HF cycle stages-growth (anagen), regression (catagen) and relative quiescence (telogen)-only anagen HFs are attacked and thereby forced to prematurely enter into catagen, thus shortening active hair growth substantially. After having previously modelled the dynamics of immune system components critically involved in the disease development (Dobreva et al., 2015), we here present a mathematical model for AA which inco

Understanding comorbidity of learning disorders: task-dependent estimates of prevalence.

BACKGROUND: Reading disorder (RD) and mathematics disorder (MD) frequently co-occur. However, the exact comorbidity rates differ largely between studies. Given that MD is characterised by high heterogeneity on the symptom level, differences in comorbidity rates may result from different mathematical subskills used to define MD. Comorbidity rates with RD are likely to be higher when MD is measured by mathematical subskills that do not only build on number processing, but also require language (i.e. arithmetic fluency), than when measured by magnitude processing skills. METHODS: The association

Causal role of the posterior parietal cortex for two-digit mental subtraction and addition: A repetitive TMS study.

Although parietal areas of the left hemisphere are known to be involved in simple mental calculation, the possible role of the homologue areas of the right hemisphere in mental complex calculation remains debated. In the present study, we tested the causal role of the posterior parietal cortex of both hemispheres in two-digit mental addition and subtraction by means of neuronavigated repetitive TMS (rTMS), investigating possible hemispheric asymmetries in specific parietal areas. In particular, we performed two rTMS experiments, which differed only for the target sites stimulated, on independe

Geometric perturbations in multiheaded papillary tip positions associated with acute ovine ischemic mitral regurgitation.

BACKGROUND: Novel surgical approaches are focusing on the "ventricular disease" of ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR), to correct altered papillary muscle (PM) tip positions (apical displacement) and ameliorate leaflet tethering. Due to the anatomic complexity of the subvalvular apparatus, however, the precise geometric perturbations of the multiheaded PM tips associated with IMR remain uncharacterized. METHODS: In 6 adult sheep, we implanted 3 markers on each PM. To specifically identify distinct PM tips, 1 marker was placed on the PM origin of the dominant chord to the anterior, posterior,

An optimal control strategy to reduce the spread of malaria resistance.

This paper presents a mathematical model of malaria transmission considering the resistance of malaria parasites to the anti-malarial drugs. The model also incorporates mass treatment and insecticide as control strategies. We consider the sensitive and resistant strains of malaria parasites in human and mosquito populations. First, we investigated the existence and stability of equilibria of the model without control based on two basic reproduction ratios corresponding to the strains. Then, the Pontryagins Maximum Principle is applied to derive the necessary conditions for optimal control. Sim

Mathematics development and difficulties: the role of visual-spatial perception and other cognitive skills.

Several neurocognitive abilities, including visual-spatial and language-based processes, attention, and fine motor/finger skills, are thought to play important roles in mathematical development and disability. Evidence for relations of specific neurocognitive skills and mathematical development and disability is presented, with a particular emphasis on findings from longitudinal studies. Why these particular neurocognitive skills are related to math is also discussed. We suggest that mathematics learning in children with congenital and acquired neurodevelopmental disorders, including children

The invalidity of the Laplace law for biological vessels and of estimating elastic modulus from total stress vs. strain: a new practical method.

There are strong medical motivations to measure changes in material properties of tubular organs, in vivo and in vitro. The current approach estimates hoop stress from intraluminal pressure using the Laplace law and identifies 'elastic modulus' as the slope of a curve fitted hoop stress plotted against strain data. We show that this procedure is fundamentally flawed because muscle and other soft tissue are closely incompressible, so that the total stress includes a volume-preserving material-dependent hydrostatic response that invalidates the method. Furthermore, we show that the Laplace law i

[Facial volumes and vertical facial type: a three dimensional comparative study].

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to compare the volume of facial cavities in untreated young subjects with long- and short-faces. METHODS: Two groups of thirty subjects each, one with low (GoGn-SN < or = 28 degrees), and the other with high (GoGn-SN > or = 36 degrees) mandibular plane angles, ages between 18 to 30 years, were selected. For each subject, volumes of orbital, sinusal and buccal cavities were measured from CT scans with the AMIRA software. The statistical studies were performed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, followed by Student "t" test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Results suggest

Cold and hot fibrosis define clinically distinct cardiac pathologies.

Fibrosis remains a major unmet medical need. Simplifying principles are needed to better understand fibrosis and to yield new therapeutic approaches. Fibrosis is driven by myofibroblasts that interact with macrophages. A mathematical cell-circuit model predicts two types of fibrosis: hot fibrosis driven by macrophages and myofibroblasts and cold fibrosis driven by myofibroblasts alone. Testing these concepts in cardiac fibrosis resulting from myocardial infarction (MI) and heart failure (HF), we revealed that acute MI leads to cold fibrosis whereas chronic injury (HF) leads to hot fibrosis. MI

Psychological Reserve/External Psychological Control in Psychotherapy: Review and New Models.

This article is about the concept of external psychological control (having a sense of psychological control over the environment). This article examines the construct of external psychological control and differentiates it from similar concepts, showing its unique attributes and how it can help understand a diverse array of psychological phenomena. Of note, external psychological control differs from internal psychological control, which is about maintaining internal psychological equilibrium or being grounded. The term psychological control is similar to terms, but we show that it differs fr
