Dentigerous Cyst in Anterior Maxilla: A Rare Occurrence.

BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst. It is also named as follicular cyst in which there is accumulation of fluid between reduced enamel epithelium and follicle. It most commonly involves the mandibular third molars. Their occurrence in anterior maxilla is rare and may mimic other radiolucent lesion, posing diagnostic challenge. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 9-year-old boy presented to the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Mahatma Gandhi Dental College & Hospital, Jaipur, with a chief complaint of progressive painless swelling in upper right front region sinc…

Central Giant Cell Granuloma of the Posterior Maxilla.

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is an uncommon, benign, proliferative intraosseous lesion of the jaws with an uncertain etiology. It is more frequently reported in the mandible, whereas maxillary involvement is relatively rare. We present the case of a 30-year-old female patient with a swelling in the right posterior maxilla that had gradually increased in size over a year. Clinical examination revealed a firm, tender, and expansile lesion, while radiographic evaluation demonstrated a well-defined radiolucent lesion associated with the maxillary posterior teeth. Histopathological analysis …

Primary extracranial meningioma of maxilla- A case report.

Meningiomas represent one of the commonest benign neural tissue neoplasms, but it is an extremely rare finding in the oral cavity. It tends to arise from the arachnoid cap cells pertaining to dura matter of the Meninges, the choroid plexus, or the brain stem. Herein, we report the case of a 36-year-old male patient, who visited our Department with the chief complaint of facial swelling associated with asymmetry. Based on thorough clinical, radiological, histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses, a diagnosis of Primary Extracranial Meningioma (PEM) of the Maxilla was made. Later, the t…

Osteomyelitis of frontal sinus, zygomatic bone and maxilla.

A 52-year male patient reported with loosening of right upper jaw. He has no pain or discharge, or any acute symptoms and systemic disease. Intraoral examination reveals necrosed maxillary bone. He also has no sickle cell disease, hepatitis, HIV or tuberculosis. 3D CT scan reveals destruction of maxilla, maxillary sinus, lateral nasal wall, superior and inferior orbital wall, zygoma and frontal bone(outer table). The clinical diagnosis of osteomyelitis was made. Under general anaesthesia, sequestrectomy was done with the help of Weber-Ferguson incision with infraorbital extension for maxilla, …

Intraosseous cavernous hemangioma: a rare presentation in maxilla.

OBJECTIVE: Hemangiomas are benign vascular lesions mostly arising from soft tissues. However, intraosseous hemangioma is a rare entity, comp … used Medpor for reconstruction of orbital floor, the infraorbital orbital rim and anterior wall of maxillary sinus. We think that Medpor is a good option since a natural smooth malar contour and adequate orbital rim can be achieved and there is no any other scar.

Non-Hodgkins lymphoma of maxilla: A rare entity.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are a group of neoplasms that originate from the cells of the lymphoreticular system. Forty percent of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas arise from extra nodal sites. Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas detected primarily in the bone are quite rare, but among jaw lesions, they are more frequently present in the maxilla than in the mandible. There are no classical characteristic clinical features of lymphomas involving the jaw bones. Swelling, ulcer or discomfort may be present in the region of the lymphoma, or it may mimic a periapical pathology or a benign condition. Extranodal non-Hodgkins…

Surgical ciliated cyst of the maxilla. Clinical case.

Surgical ciliated cyst is uncommon in Western countries but frequently reported in Asian populations as a delayed complication of surgery, with inclusion in the bone of nasal or sinus mucosa. Isolated cases have also been reported in the mandible after orthognathic surgery. We report a case in the maxillary region three years after radical sinus surgery for chronic sinusitis. Intraoral examination revealed a small painless tumefaction with no color change in the surrounding tissues. Computed tomography demonstrated a well-defined intraosseous lesion lateral to the maxillary sinus. The lesion w…

Well-defined radiolucent area involving the anterior maxilla.

An example of a large and symptomatic nasopalatine duct cyst is presented. This cyst is the most common type of developmental or fissural cyst occurring in the maxilla. Treatment for most patients is conservative surgical excision. The excised tissue should be submitted for histopathologic examination to establish a definitive diagnosis and to rule out the possibility of a more serious lesion.

Desmoplastic Fibroma of the Maxilla: A Report of a Rare Case.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is an uncommon benign tumor of bone that is notable for its locally destructive nature and frequent recurrence. The lesion originates within the osseous tissue and most often affects the mandible, pelvic girdle, and long bones; involvement of the maxilla is rare. An 18-year-old female patient presented with a slowly developing lesion in the right maxillary premolar area. Clinical examination supported by radiographic findings demonstrated an intraosseous pathology, and histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of desmoplastic fibroma. Although benign, this …

A case of phosphoglyceride crystal deposition disease in the maxilla.

BACKGROUND: Phosphoglyceride crystal deposition disease (PCDD) is a rare disorder in which phosphoglyceride crystals accumulate in soft tissues and bones. It tends to occur years after surgery, trauma, or repeated injections. CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old woman was referred to our department because of swelling of the left maxillary gingiva. The left maxillary second molar had been extracted more than 10 years earlier. Surgical biopsy was performed, and histopathological findings indicated a foreign body granuloma. The patient underwent tumorectomy, during which we found a yellowish tumor…

Ameloblastic Carcinoma of the Maxilla With Uncommon Sinus Manifestations.

Ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) represents a distinct challenge in the realm of odontogenic malignancies due to its rarity and aggressive nature. We present a unique case of AC in a 70-year-old male, retired dry cleaner, with symptoms initially suggestive of chronic allergic rhinitis and recurrent acute sinusitis with asymmetric facial edema and paresthesia. Detailed evaluation revealed a prominent mass in the right maxillary sinus with extensive cortical destruction. Pathological assessment post-right maxillectomy identified a high-grade AC with malignant spindle cell transformation. The patient …

Treatment alternatives for the rehabilitation of the posterior edentulous maxilla.

Rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla with implant-supported fixed dental prostheses can represent a significant clinical challenge due to limited bone availability and surgical access, among other factors. This review addresses several treatment options to replace missing teeth in posterior maxillary segments, namely the placement of standard implants in conjunction with maxillary sinus floor augmentation, short implants, tilted implants, and distal cantilever extensions. Pertinent technical information and a concise summary of relevant evidence on the reported outcomes of these different …

An unusual presentation of osteoblastoma of the maxilla: A case report.

This report presents a rare case of maxillary osteoblastoma in a 17-year-old female. The patient presented with dull pain and facial asymmetry inferior to the left zygoma. An intraoral examination found a painless swelling on the buccal gingival tissue in the left posterior maxilla. Panoramic radiographs and multidetector computed tomographic images revealed an ill-defined, non-corticated, mixed attenuating entity of osseous density located within the left posterior maxilla apical to the left maxillary molars. The entity exhibited a heterogeneous internal structure with a fine granular appeara…

Racial disparity of Crouzon syndrome in maxilla and mandible.

The racial disparity of facial features in craniosynostosis patients is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to explore the difference in maxillary and mandibular morphology and spatial position in Asian and Caucasian Crouzon syndrome patients. Ninety-one computed tomography scans were included (12 Asian Crouzon syndrome patients, 22 Asian controls; 16 Caucasian Crouzon syndrome patients, 41 Caucasian controls) and measured using Materialise software. The maxillary and mandibular volumes of Asian patients were both reduced by 19% (P=0.102 and P=0.187), and those of Caucasian patient…
