Technical report: a high-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy boost for residual sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is a highly aggressive and uncommon neoplasm that arises from the mucosa of the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses. The multidisciplinary approach that includes surgery, radiation therapy (RT), and chemotherapy has been proven to improve survival rates. However, there is no established evidence for the efficacy of further (boost) irradiation following definitive RT in SNUC patients with residual primary tumor. We describe a successful case of a patient with SNUC who had an uncontrolled primary tumor following induction chemotherapy and radical concurr

[Use of echography in pathology of the maxillary sinuses].

Sonography has recently gained attention as a non-invasive technique improving the diagnostic accuracy of conventional radiology as regards the pathologic conditions of the maxillary sinus. Eighty-two patients with various pathologies of the maxillary sinus--i.e. acute/chronic sinusitis, mucocele, mucopyocele, polyp, and carcinoma--were submitted to US after preliminary conventional radiographs and before CT and surgical treatment (both performed in selected cases only). US proved useful in detecting liquid exudate, mucosal hypertrophy, and lesions of the anterior wall, while it was not as acc

Maxillary sinus disease: diagnosis and treatment.

The maxillary sinus is the paranasal sinus that impacts most on the work of the dentist as they will often be required to make a diagnosis in relation to orofacial pain that may be sinogenic in origin. Maxillary sinus disease is often coincidentally observed on radiographs, and dentists often have to make a diagnosis and plan treatment based on the interpretation of the image. This paper aims to guide the dental professional through some of the disease processes involving the paranasal sinuses and in particular the maxillary sinus. The outcome is to encourage comprehensive history taking and e

Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma: Case report with review on role of imaging in diagnosis.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a locally aggressive benign vascular neoplasm, composed of vasogenic and myofibroblastic elements, accounts for 0.05-0.5% of all the head and neck neoplasms. There are very few case reports of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma involving the oral cavity; we report a case involving both the maxilla and mandible in a 17-year-old patient who reported with a large firm swelling on right side of face with recurrent epistaxis and headache. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed a large lobulated enhancing soft tissue mass, which was hypointense on T1-weighted image

Primary extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the oral cavity.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) belongs to a group of lymphoid neoplasms that is diverse in manner of presentation, response to therapy and prognosis. Usually the oral manifestations of NHL are secondary to a more widespread involvement throughout the body. Though primary intraoral lesions in NHL are uncommon, it is important to be aware of them, since intraoral manifestations are the presenting symptom in these patients. A 55 year old woman presented with a swelling in the maxillary right alveolus and buccal vestibule. There were no palpable lymph nodes. A CT scan revealed a mass on the labial a

[Sinonasal ameloblastoma: Clinical case presentation and literature review].

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal ameloblastoma is considered a locally benign, rare, and locally aggressive neoplasm. It is included within the so-called peripheral ameloblastomas. The symptoms are nonspecific, such as epistaxis, rhinorrhea, and nasal obstruction. The diagnosis requires a broad approach, imaging studies and complete clinical history; however, the histopathological diagnosis is the gold standard. As for treatment, the mainstay is surgical; however, it is currently being studied to complement it with radiotherapy or BRAF inhibitors. The objective was to present a clinical case of a Mexican

Recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma of paranasal sinuses: A rare case report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a distinct salivary gland neoplasm that predominantly occurs in the minor salivary gland. ACC is an uncommon tumor that progress slowly affecting 5% of paranasal sinuses with high distant metastasis rate in advance stages. This salivary gland tumor is difficult to diagnose both clinically and histopathologically due to its indolent presentation and diverse histopathological patterns. Hence, immunohistochemistry plays a decisive role in diagnosing this tumor. A recurrent case of ACC of paranasal sinuses in the maxillary sinus of a 41-year-old female patient wit

Osteoblastoma of maxilla with cartilaginous matrix: review of literature and report of a case.

Osteoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm of jaws. We report a case of a recurrent osteoblastoma in the maxilla of a 34-year-old male who presented with aggressive clinical and histologic features: namely root resorption, tooth mobility, involvement of maxillary sinus, chondroid formation, host bone trapping, and lack of osteoblastic rimming. The lesion is discussed with particular emphasis on its differentiation from malignant lesions especially low-grade osteosarcoma. A systematic review of other reported cases of osteoblastoma of jaws with a note on the recurrent cases has been put forth.

Bone-Preserving Management of Maxillary Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma With Orbital Floor Thinning: A Case Report.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a benign fibro-osseous neoplasm that most often affects the mandible and occurs predominantly in women during the third and fourth decades of life. Maxillary involvement is less common and may remain minimally symptomatic while expanding into the maxillary sinus. We present a 26-year-old woman with a six-month history of progressive right midface enlargement without pain, nasal obstruction, diplopia, visual symptoms, or dental mobility. Computed tomography demonstrated a well-circumscribed expansile right maxillary lesion measuring 44.9 × 42.5 × 31.9 mm, occu

SMARCB1-Deficient Sinonasal Carcinoma: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND SMARCB1-deficient sinonasal carcinoma is a rare neoplasm with inactivation of the SWI/SNF complex, with an aggressive clinical course as most of the lesions present as advanced in pT3/T4 stages with frequent recurrence, and many patients succumb to the disease. Reported initially in 2014, the lesion has male predominance, with an age range of 19 to 89 years and predilection for the ethmoid sinus and nasal cavity. Histopathological findings show a proliferation of small- to medium-sized monomorphic basaloid cells with indistinctive cytoplasmic borders and round variably prominent nuc

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma in the maxillary sinus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, previously called malignant fibrous histiocytoma, is a type of malignant mesenchymal tumor (sarcoma) of soft tissue and sometimes bone. It is uncommon in the oral cavity and very sporadic in the maxillary sinus. Microscopic diagnosis of this malignancy in the maxillary sinus can be very challenging, because there is a range of features that may overlap with other benign and malignant tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: In this paper, we report a case of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma in the maxillary sinus of a 61-year-old Iranian man who was ref

Analysis of Diagnosis and Treatment Strategies for Primary Juvenile Psammomatoid Ossifying Fibroma Complicated With Primary Aneurysmal Bone Cyst.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Psammomatoid Ossifying Fibroma (JPOF) is a type of noncancerous bone tumor that usually affects adolescents in the craniomaxillofacial area. Clinical manifestations are usually symptoms caused by the tumor's invasive compression of surrounding tissues. Aneurysmal Bone Cyst (ABC) is also a benign bone tumor, and it typically occurs in long bones and the spine. Only 2% to 3% of cases occur in the head and neck. Due to the rarity of this combination of clinical cases, clinicians face difficulties in comprehensively understanding this complex lesion. Therefore, a comprehensive

Combined small cell carcinoma of the sinonasal tract associated with syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone: A case report.

Combined small cell carcinoma (SmCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) is a rare malignant neoplasm in the head and neck. This study presents the first reported case of combined SmCC and SqCC originating from the sinonasal tract accompanied by syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). An 80-year-old female presented with a four-week history of right nasal discharge, nasal obstruction and left neck swelling. Imaging studies revealed a tumorous lesion in the maxillary sinus encroaching upon the right nasal cavity and left cervical lymph node (LN) swelling. An incision

Fronto-orbital mucoceles: our experience.

Frontal sinus mucoceles are rare benign neoplasms that can result in bony erosion extending from the borders of the sinus into the orbital cavity. The authors report the fronto-orbital mucoceles they have observed in the last 8 years. The authors used an "open surgery" approach in 12 fronto-orbital mucoceles, characterized by an osteoplastic frontal flap, through a coronal incision or Lynch incision. In this way, they were able to expose the frontal sinus and to remove completely the mucocele from the periorbita. Only one recurrence is reported 2 years after surgery. Excellent aesthetic result

Multimodality Treatment in Ewing's Sarcoma Family Tumors of the Maxilla and Maxillary Sinus: Review of the Literature.

The Ewing sarcoma family of tumors (ESFT) encompasses a group of highly aggressive, morphologically similar, malignant neoplasms sharing a common spontaneous genetic translocation that affect mostly children and young adults. These predominantly characteristic, small round-cell tumors include Ewing's sarcoma of the bone and soft tissue, as well as primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) involving the bone, soft tissue, and thoracopulmonary region (Askin's tumor). Extraosseous ESFTs are extremely rare, especially in the head and neck region, where literature to date consists of sporadic case r

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the maxillary sinus.

Extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMPs) are localized plasma cell neoplasms that occur within the soft tissues; by definition they cannot occur within bone. They account for 1-2% of all plasma cell growths and have a great predilection for the upper respiratory tract, without specific manifestations. Males are more frequently affected during the fifth and sixth decades of life. At initial presentation, multiple myeloma should be excluded. We report herein the case of a 63-year-old man with an EMP arising in the right maxillary sinus who was referred for surgical excision and postoperative radiothe
