[Maxillary osteonecrosis after denosumab treatment].

A 58-year-old patient with a history of intravenous use of denosumab was referred to the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery with inadequate recovery after a series of extractions. During physical and radiological examination, several sites of exposed necrotic bone with purulent discharge were seen, and the maxilla appeared fractured at the level of Le Fort 1. Treatment consisted of intravenous administration of antibiotics with consecutive sequestrectomy of the maxilla under general anaesthesia. While Medication Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) is most commonly seen in patien

Artificial Intelligence for Diagnostic Decision-Making in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being applied in oral and maxillofacial surgery; however, its primary clinical value lies in supporting decision-making rather than replacing clinicians. Surgeons must integrate diverse sources of information, including imaging, pathology, and systemic conditions, which can increase cognitive workload and contribute to diagnostic variability. This review summarizes the current role of AI-based clinical decision support by organizing its applications into 3 cognitive stages: detection, diagnostic interpretation, and risk prediction. AI systems can as

[Early orthodontic treatment of mouth breathing related to malocclusion in children].

Mouth breathing is one of the most common oral and maxillofacial abnormalities in children. Children with mouth breathing are often accompanied by obstructive sleep apnea, which not only affects children's dentofacial development, leading to the occurrence of malocclusion, but also may lead to a series of serious systemic complications. The diagnosis and treatment of mouth breathing and its related malocclusions require multidisciplinary collaboration. This paper discusses the etiology and harm of mouth breathing, diagnosis of mouth breathing related problems, correlation between mouth breathi…

Occurrence of maxillary sinus abnormalities detected by cone beam CT in asymptomatic patients.

BACKGROUND: Although cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of the maxillofacial region allow the inspection of the entire volume of the maxillary sinus (MS), identifying anatomic variations and abnormalities in the image volume, this is frequently neglected by oral radiologists when interpreting images of areas at a distance from the dentoalveolar region, such as the full anatomical aspect of the MS. The aim of this study was to investigate maxillary sinus abnormalities in asymptomatic patients by using CBCT. METHODS: 1113 CBCT were evaluated by two examiners and identification of abnor

Aesthetic and Functional Rehabilitation of Postburn Maxillofacial Deformity.

Postburn maxillofacial deformities, although rare, are a significant cause of morbidity. Since contracture scars have a potential role in deforming the maxillofacial skeleton, the focus of treatment should be on growing patients, where scar contractures can drastically influence growth and morphology of the maxillofacial units. There are certain aspects of severe facial burns and deformities, especially of the jaws, that deserve sincere attention to overcome aesthetic and functional disabilities such as inability to masticate and incompetent lips. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to

Goldenhar syndrome: clinical features with orofacial emphasis.

OBJECTIVES: Goldenhar syndrome (GS) is a relatively common developmental disorder characterized by craniofacial anomalies in association with vertebral, cardiac, renal, and central nervous system defects. This paper describes GS features with special emphasis on oral characteristics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The clinical features of 6 patients with GS aged 3 months to 12 years are described, and a brief review of the literature about this genetic disorder is presented. RESULTS: All patients demonstrated the classical triad of GS, including mandibular hypoplasia resulting in facial asymmetry, ea

Craniofacial changes following early prosthetic treatment in a case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with complete anodontia.

The authors describe early prosthetic treatment in a case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with complete anodontia. Craniofacial changes were analyzed by means of Ricketts' cephalometric analysis and superimposition methods. Early prosthetic treatment for complete anodontia determined a backward-downward rotation of the mandible with consequent normal positioning of the chin in the space, normalization in lower facial height, reduction in convexity of the face, and improvement in facial esthetics. Superimposition methods demonstrated that the direction of growth of both the maxilla and the

Review: the value of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) as a model for research in craniofacial development.

American alligators exhibit a number of morphological features which are more characteristic of mammals than reptiles. This unique combination makes an extremely useful animal for experimental investigations of craniofacial development. Thus, it is possible to make a longitudinal study of the development of the alligator's secondary palate by utilizing shell-less culture techniques. Incubation of eggs at 28 degrees C, as opposed to 3 degrees C, slows development sufficiently to enable both the recovery of critical intermediate stages, and also great precision in the timing of teratogen adminis

Linear Epidermal Nevus: A Case Report With Oral and Facial Manifestations.

A 20-year-old man presented to the oral and maxillofacial surgery department for evaluation and treatment of a dentofacial deformity. On examination, it was noted that he had marked hemifacial hyperpigmented papillomatous lesions covering the upper and middle thirds of the right side of his face extending to the right upper lid. Of note, he also had extensive intraoral involvement. These features were highly suggestive of linear epidermal nevus, a congenital hamartomatous lesion of the ectoderm. Linear epidermal nevus with oral manifestations is extremely rare with very few cases reported in t

Orbit and maxilla augmentation of oblique facial clefts using mandibular outer cortex.

BACKGROUND: This study focused on using the mandibular outer cortex for orbital and maxillary augmentation of oblique facial clefts. METHODS: Eight oblique facial clefts were reconstructed with the mandibular outer cortex from April 2000 to April 2008. RESULTS: No visible scars and few complications were observed at the donor site. Postoperative follow-up for 6 months to 3 years demonstrated that all of the patients had good aesthetic facial appearances. CONCLUSIONS: The mandibular outer cortex can be used for orbital and maxillary augmentation of oblique facial clefts.

Chromosome 7 abnormalities in parents of children with holoprosencephaly and hydronephrosis.

At least nine cases of holoprosencephaly (HPE) found in patients with confirmed loss of 7q34----7qter or 7q36----7qter have been reported in the literature. In the present report, balanced rearrangements involving chromosome 7q [inv(7)(p22.1q34) and t(4;7)(q31;q36)] were shown in two mothers examined after the birth of their non-karyotyped infants with HPE and hydronephrosis. In both cases, del(7q) was the most probable imbalance. The available data confirm the association between HPE and del(7q). Predominance of cyclopia and cebocephaly, the severest forms of HPE, suggests that del(7q) may be

Goldenhar syndrome (oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum): Findings on cone beam computed tomography-3 case reports.

BACKGROUND: Goldenhar syndrome, also known as oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum, is a variant of hemifacial microsomia, a congenital condition affecting primarily aural, oral, and mandibular development, with vertebral anomalies, ocular abnormalities, and epibulbar dermoids. As a complex and heterogeneous condition, this disorder varies from mild to severe, and involvement is unilateral in many cases, but bilateral involvement is also known to occur. It presents several complex problems in treatment, requiring an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. CLINICAL AND RADIOGRAPHIC FINDINGS: Ocul

Grainyhead-like Transcription Factors in Craniofacial Development.

Craniofacial development in vertebrates involves the coordinated growth, migration, and fusion of several facial prominences during embryogenesis, processes governed by strict genetic and molecular controls. A failure in any of the precise spatiotemporal sequences of events leading to prominence fusion often leads to anomalous facial, skull, and jaw formation-conditions termed craniofacial defects (CFDs). Affecting approximately 0.1% to 0.3% of live births, CFDs are a highly heterogeneous class of developmental anomalies, which are often underpinned by genetic mutations. Therefore, identifying
