An unusual cause of stridor in an adult: mediastinal foregut duplication cyst.

We present a case of unusual presentation of stridor in an adult man who was identified to have a sudden expansion of a foregut duplication cyst in the mediastinum. This resulted in superior vena caval obstruction and subsequent airway compromise. Following resuscitation, the cyst was surgically removed via a thoracotomy which confirmed the diagnosis and provided definitive management. Foregut duplication cysts are an unusual cause of stridor in adults, with only five cases ever documented worldwide in the literature, presenting in such a manner. This case is a reminder of the importance of th

[Resection of 8 mediastinal bronchogenic cysts by video-assisted thoracoscopy].

Mediastinal bronchogenic cysts are an uncommon entity and surgical experience of their removal by video-assisted thoracoscopy is limited. We present our patient outcomes and surgical technique in the treatment of bronchogenic cysts by video-assisted thoracoscopy. The study included 8 patients (4 females and 4 males between the ages of 4 and 52 years), 7 of whom presented clinical symptoms. The mean widest diameter of the cyst was 7.6 cm. In 5 patients the cyst was in the middle mediastinum and in 3, the posterior mediastinum. The intervention was performed using 3 or 4 entry points. Initial pu

Infrared illumination during thoracoscopic excision of mediastinal bronchogenic cysts.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital abnormalities that occur due to abnormal development of the ventral foregut. Most share a common wall with … s the dissection plane between the cyst and the esophagus. This technique facilitates dissection of mediastinal cysts and helps avoid injury to the esophagus. It was found to be safe and effective in 3 children. The system may be applicable to other esophageal operations such as Nissen fundoplication or Heller myotomy.

Bronchogenic and esophageal duplication cyst in a single mediastinal mass in a child.

We report an unusual case of a mediastinal foregut malformation consisting of complete components of both a bronchogenic and an esophageal duplication cyst in a child. The lesion was identified as an incidental finding during evaluation of a clavicular fracture. Thoracotomy was performed for excision of the mass. A discussion of the pathological findings and the diagnosis and management of foregut malformations is presented.

Thoracic Surgeon Encounters Cerebrospinal Fluid? A Rare Case of Mediastinal Arachnoid Cyst.

Growth of a spinal arachnoid cyst into the posterior mediastinum is a rare phenomenon not described in the literature. We present the case of a 30-year-old patient with chest pain, cough, fatigue, and occasional dysphagia who was found to have an 8 × 6.5 × 9.5-cm cyst located in the posterior mediastinum on imaging. The patient was taken to the operating room, where clear fluid positive for β2-microglobulin consistent with cerebrospinal fluid was encountered. Dural communication with the spinal canal was identified, confirming diagnosis of an arachnoid cyst. This report aims to describe this r

Anterior mediastinal gastroenteric cyst containing pancreatic tissue influenced the diabetes mellitus status.

The mediastinal gastroenteric cyst is a rare developmental cyst. In general, the majority of mediastinal gastroenteric cysts are recognized in infancy and are commonly located in the posterior mediastinum. In addition, gastroenteric cysts occasionally contain pancreatic tissue; however, no studies have reported that these cysts influenced the diabetes mellitus status of the patient. We report here an extremely rare case of an adult gastroenteric cyst with pancreatic tissue originating from the anterior mediastinum, influencing the severity of diabetes mellitus in a patient. This case report pr

Giant primary mediastinal hydatid cyst causing Horner's syndrome: report of a case.

As the liver and the lungs are the most common sites for hydatid cysts, a primary mediastinal involvement is quite rare. The symptoms related to primary mediastinal hydatid cysts usually depend on the size, location and compression to nearby structures. Presenting a 51-year-old male patient with the symptoms of Horner's Syndrome, we draw attention to a rare complication of a giant primary mediastinal hydatid cyst and its challenging management.

Antenatally diagnosed intraspinal-posterior mediastinal neurenteric cyst - what is the optimal management?

Neurenteric cyst is a rare congenital anomaly that belongs to the spinal dysraphism spectrum. It is classically a disease of late childhood, with some rare reports of intrauterine and adult presentation. The increase in incidental antenatal diagnosis raises new management questions. We present a case of an asymptomatic combined intraspinal-posterior mediastinal neurenteric cyst. The cyst was diagnosed on antenatal ultrasound and was initially treated with image-guided aspiration in early infancy. However, the cyst recurred and the patient developed recurrent episodes of bacterial meningitis. T

Anterior mediastinal ectopic pancreatic cyst incidentally identified by pericarditis: a case report.

Ectopic pancreas often occurs in the gastrointestinal tract. However, the identification of a mediastinal ectopic pancreas is extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of ectopic pancreas of the anterior mediastinum, which was incidentally detected during treatment for pericarditis with widespread ST elevation on electrocardiogram. A 40-year-old woman complaining of chest pain was admitted with suspected pericarditis. A closer examination revealed a cystic mass in the anterior mediastinum, which was diagnosed as a pancreatic cyst of the anterior mediastinum on thoracoscopic tumor resection.

Fistulization of hydatid mediastinal cyst to the anterior thoracic wall: case report.

Echinococcosis/hydatidosis is a frequent parasitic and zoonotic disease in the population engaged with agriculture and stockbreeding. It is seen most frequently in the liver and lung in adults. Mediastinal location of the disease is very rare. In this study we aimed to present a 31-year-old man having hydatid disease in the anterior mediastinum fistulated to the skin in the right subclavicular region, together with the literature. The patient was operated on through a partial sternotomy incision, and excision of the cyst and the fistula was performed.

[A case report of extralobar pulmonary sequestration associated with mediastinal bronchogenic cyst].

A 48-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of abnormal shadow on the chest X-ray. Chest contrast CT scan showed roundly mass in the posterior mediastinum which were combined with and without contrast elements, and chest MRI (T2 weighted) showed high signal intensity. These features suggested mediastinal cyst or extralobar sequestration. The operation was performed through left 6th intercostal thoracotomy. Two different lesions connected to the mediastinum were confirmed, a cystic tumor and small accessory lung. The former was diagnosed as bronchogenic cyst and the latter as extra…

Rare Posterior Mediastinal Müllerian Cyst Resected by VATS: Case Report and Literature Review.

Background: Müllerian cysts of the posterior mediastinum are exceedingly rare benign lesions that closely resemble other mediastinal cysts on imaging, making preoperative diagnosis difficult. Methods: Here, we report the case of a 36-year-old woman in whom a paravertebral cystic lesion at the T8 level was incidentally detected during evaluation of nonspecific pain in the right upper limb. Laboratory tests and chest computed tomography were unremarkable apart from the well-circumscribed homogeneous mediastinal cyst. The lesion was completely excised via video-assisted thoracoscopic resection. R…

Mediastinal Thoracic Duct Cyst Infection after Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection for Early Esophageal Cancer.

A mediastinal thoracic duct cyst that originates from the thoracic duct is a very rare disease in the mediastinum. There have been no reports of mediastinal thoracic duct cyst infection caused by endoscopic treatment. This is the first case of mediastinal thoracic duct cyst infection after endoscopic submucosal dissection for early esophageal cancer. We herein report a 75-year-old man with mediastinal thoracic duct cyst infection caused by esophageal endoscopic submucosal dissection. In cases where a mediastinal thoracic duct cyst is found before performing endoscopic esophageal treatment, we

Complete portal robotic resection of a giant mediastinal parathyroid cyst; A case report.

Parathyroid cysts (PCs) are rare, benign, cystic lesions, and PCs that occur in the mediastinum (mediastinal parathyroid cysts [MPCs]) are even more rare. Surgical resection is recommended as the first choice of treatment for MPCs. Sternotomy, thoracotomy, and thoracoscopic approaches are the most common methods for resection of MPCs. Herein, we report a case of robotic right portal minimally invasive resection of a giant nonfunctional MPC in the right anterosuperior mediastinum.
