Hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis and vascular occlusive diseases. Measurements of total homocysteine (Hcy) require an accurate reproducible method. A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPCL) method for evaluating plasma Hcy after reduction with 2-mercaptoethanol and precolumn derivatization with iodoacetic acid and o-phthaldialdehyde is described. The presence of Leptospira spp. and Brucella spp. antibodies was investigated in serum samples from 28 collared anteaters (Tamandua tetradactyla) kept in seven Brazilian zoos. The immune response of buffalo calves and heifers to a full or half dose of Brucella abortus strain 19 vaccine was studied. Buffalo calves developed high serum agglutination test (SAT) titres following full dose vaccination. These titres declined more rapidly in calves of six months of age than in calves of eleven to twelve months of age. Two outbreaks of acute toxoplasmosis involving 8 adult patients in Korea were linked to eating uncooked pork. Brucellosis is being reported with increasing frequency in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Serum antibodies in high-risk and general populations help to define cut-off levels and can be used as a simple and rapid diagnostic tests in infected areas.
