Whole-brain mapping of increased manganese levels in welders and its association with exposure and motor function.

Although manganese (Mn) is a trace metal essential for humans, chronic exposure to Mn can cause accumulation of this metal ion in the brain leading to an increased risk of neurological and neurobehavioral health effects. This is a concern for welders exposed to Mn through welding fumes. While brain Mn accumulation in occupational settings has mostly been reported in the basal ganglia, several imaging studies also revealed elevated Mn in other brain areas. Since Mn functions as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T1 contrast agent, we developed a whole-brain MRI approach to map in vivo Mn deposi

Topographic properties of the cornea in welders.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the topographic status of the welders' corneas. METHODS: In this historical cohort, a group of welders (with at least 5 years' experience in welding) and a control group were assessed and compared. Lack of exposure to welding for 3 months or more was considered an exclusion criterion. In all participants, after taking a complete history of visual and ocular problems, both eyes underwent Pentacam imaging. Then, all subjects received slit lamp biomicroscopy for evaluation of ocular surface diseases. RESULTS: The data of 140 welders (mean ag

Mercury-impacted scrap metal: Source and nature of the mercury.

The reuse and recycling of industrial solid wastes such as scrap metal is supported and encouraged both internationally and domestically, especially when such wastes can be used as substitutes for raw material. However, scrap metal processing facilities, such as mini-mills, have been identified as a source of mercury (Hg) emissions in the United States. This research aims to better define some of the key issues related to the source and nature of mercury in the scrap metal waste stream. Overall, it is difficult to pinpoint the key mercury sources feeding into scrap metal recycling facilities,

Assessment of hand-arm vibration syndrome in a northern Ontario base metal mine.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) in 617 workers at a base metal mine in northern Ontario. Workers who were employed at the mine between the years 1989 and 1994 and who continued to live within a 100 km radius of the mine were sent a self-reported questionnaire to identify individuals with possible vibration-induced symptoms in their upper extremities. Of the 162 workers who attended the medical examination, 50% were diagnosed with HAVS, 26% had other diagnoses with some workers having multiple afflictions e.g., both HAVS and carp

Occupation and bronchial carcinoma.

All patients newly diagnosed as bronchial carcinoma were studied during a 5-year period. There were 212 male and 61 female patients. A careful occupational history was taken and the occupations of the patients in 1950 were compared with the County's official occupational statistics of that year, and their chest X-rays were scrutinized for pleural plaques. A significantly higher proportion of metal workers and workers from the building industry was found among the patients, while agricultural workers were under-represented. Smoking habits did not explain the difference. The number of patients w

[Nephrotoxicity of metallic mercury in conditions of occupational exposure].

The authors discuss the nephrotoxic effect of metallic mercury vapour in conditions of occupational exposure on the basis of literature available. They present the current knowledge on the ways of absorption, distribution and effect of mercury on the human body. Then they focus on biochemical enzymatic and immunological indices used in the assessment of early stage of kidney damage. They also present results of epidemiological survey in workers occupationally exposed to vapour of metallic mercury.

[Other pneumoconioses].

The most prevalent pneumoconioses are silicosis, asbestosis and coal worker's pneumoconiosis. Other pneumoconioses that have distinct clinical, functional and structural repercussions are caused by inhalation of metal powder in fumes from metals or organic salts. The distinction in terms of the chemical form of the inhaled compound is related to the tissue reaction and to the prognosis. Simple pneumoconiosis, siderosis, berylliosis and phosphate rock-related pneumoconiosis, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease caused by exposure to heavy metals, are succinctly discussed. Nephrotic Syndrome Associated With Heavy Metals Exposure: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Heavy metals are found in many products used in everyday life. In addition, many workers are exposed to higher concentrations of such metals in their work environment. Many of these metals may cause toxic effects in humans and there are many reports relating them to the occurrence of kidney disorders such as nephrotic syndrome. In this study, we present a case of a 38-year-old woman with nephrotic syndrome suspected to be related to heavy metal toxicity, after ruling out all other secondary causes. At the same time, she proved refractory to multiple therapies. Furthermore, a related literature

[Manganese in drinking water and its contribution to human exposure].

Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) has been used in Canada since 1976 as an additive in unleaded gasoline. The combustion of MMT leads to the emission of Mn oxides to the environment and may represent a potential risk to public health. It therefore seems important to assess the associated Mn exposure. The present study is part of a broader research program on total human exposure to Mn and aims specifically at assessing the level of exposure to Mn and other metals via drinking water. A comparative study was performed between two groups of workers (garage mechanics and blue coll

Sarcoidosis in Northern Ontario hard-rock miners: A case series.

Sarcoidosis is a rare multisystem granulomatous disease traditionally considered to be of unknown etiology. The notion that sarcoidosis has no known cause is called into question with the increasing number of case reports and epidemiologic studies showing associations between occupational exposures and disease published in the past 10-20 years. Occupational exposures for which associations are strongest and most consistent are silica and other inorganic dusts, World Trade Center (WTC) dust, and metals. Occupations identified as at-risk for sarcoidosis include construction workers; iron-foundry

Evaluation of hematological, biochemical parameters and thiol enzyme activity in chrome plating workers.

The most commonly used solution in chrome plating bath is chromic acid (hexavalent Cr), and a considerable amount of mists is released into the air and consequently produce hazards to workers. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether the biomarker of exposure to metals, specially Cr levels, presents associations with hematological and biochemical parameters and if they can alter the activity of enzymes that contain thiol groups such as pyruvate kinase, creatine kinase, adenylate kinase, and δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase. Fifty male chrome plating workers were used for exposed group

Urinary concentrations of trichloroacetic acid in Danish workers exposed to trichloroethylene, 1947-1985.

BACKGROUND: Since 1947, the National Labour Inspection Service in Denmark has relied upon urinary measurements of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in surveys of the occupational exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE). METHODS: We examined the paper files relating to 2397 TCA measurements to extract information about the year, the company, the work process and the worker. We used multiple regression models to analyze the effects of various factors on the urinary concentration of TCA. RESULTS: The regression analyses showed that (1) a four-fold decrease in TCA concentrations occurred from 1947 to 1985;
