An analysis of the available data on the clastogenic effects of metals and their compounds on higher organisms indicates some general trends. Following chronic exposure to subtoxic doses, a decrease in mitotic frequency and an increase in the number of chromosomal abnormalities are observed. These effects are usually directly proportional to the dose applied and the duration of treatment within the threshold limits. Recovery after acute treatment is inversely related to the dosage. The ultimate expression of the effects depends on certain factors, including the mode and vehicle of administrati…

The activity of the DNA-repair protein O6-alkylguanine-DNA-alkyltransferase was found to be strongly inhibited by a number of metal ions. Cd2+ was the most active followed by Cu2+, Hg2+, Zn2+ and Ag2. This inhibition is likely to result from the interaction of the metals with the cysteine-acceptor residue on the protein since the inhibition was reduced by increasing the concentration of dithiothreitol in the assay buffer. These results raise the possibility that exposure to Cd2+ could increase the mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of alkylating agents by retarding the rate of repair of alkylate…

Three adducts have been prepared from Hg(CN)(2) and square planar M(II)(CN)(4)(2)(-) transition metal cyanides (M = Pt, Pd, or Ni, with d(8) electron shell) as solids. The structure of the compounds K(2)PtHg(CN)(6).2H(2)O (1), Na(2)PdHg(CN)(6).2H(2)O (2), and K(2)NiHg(CN)(6).2H(2)O (3) have been studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy in the solid state. The structure of K(2)PtHg(CN)(6).2H(2)O consists of one-dimensional wires. No CN(-) bridges occur between the heterometallic centers. The wires are strictly linear, and the Pt(II) and

The study of trace and major elements in the biosphere has traditionally focused on the transition and basic metals; the rare earth (REMs), alkaline earth (AEMs) and alkali metals (AMs) that equally constitute environmental contaminants are rarely considered especially in the tropics. The levels and spatial variation of some REMs, AEMs and AMs in the 0-50-cm layer of agricultural soils of Ikwo in southeastern Nigeria typing a humid tropical environment were studied. Soil sampling was undertaken at five zones namely north, south, east, west and centre (covering over 60% of the land area) in the…

Transition metals refer to the elements in the d and ds blocks of the periodic table. Since the success of cisplatin and auranofin, transition metal-based compounds have become a prospective source for drug development, particularly in cancer treatment. In recent years, extensive studies have shown that numerous transition metal-based compounds could modulate autophagy, promising a new therapeutic strategy for metal-related diseases and the design of metal-based agents. Copper, zinc, and manganese, which are common components in physiological pathways, play important roles in the progression o…

BACKGROUND: Distinction of aseptic from septic hip arthroplasty failure can be challenging. Some studies report an increased incidence of septic failure with metal-on-metal (MoM) hip arthroplasties. The Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS) have formulated criteria to facilitate the diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). In this study, we determined the prevalence and histologic features of septic MoM hip failure.
METHODS: Overall, 104 cases of failed MoM hip arthroplasty, classified as septic or aseptic by MSIS microbiological criteria, were analyzed. The overall prevalence of

The aim of this study was to study the actual clinical and laboratory results of metal-on-metal resurfacing hip arthroplasties by comparing with other implants. A total of 127 cases were operated on at the Department of Orthopaedics of Wuhan Union Hospital from 2005 to 2011. An important cause of failure is the fracture of the femoral neck. The chromium and cobalt levels of resurfacing hip arthroplasty and large-diameter head total hip arthroplasty (THA) are higher than those of a conventional metal-on-polyethylene total hip arthroplasty. There was a high ion level associated with an abduction

BACKGROUND: While most reports of audible squeaking in total hip arthroplasty (THA) have focused on ceramic bearings, squeaking can occur in metal-on-metal bearings and may be an important clinical complication to consider during patient followup.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We retrospectively identified 10 patients with squeaking metal-on-metal hip resurfacings.
METHODS: This study reports acetabular inclination angles and patient satisfaction, and describes two patients with squeaking resurfacings: one was revised and the other is pending revision. The minimum followup time in all 10 patients was

Total hip arthroplasty has led to a breakthrough in the treatment of patients with degenerative joint diseases and provides an appropriate response to the alleviation of pain and to patient mobility. The constant increase in the rate of operations for relatively young patients, as well as older ones, has raised the necessity for enhancing longevity of implants. It is currently assumed that the main reason for implant failure of conventional joints is the biological reaction to polyethylene wear that leads to bone absorption--osteolysis. In order to avoid this, interest has been renewed on alte

The molecular chemistry of the f-elements is traditionally dominated by the use of carbon-, nitrogen-, oxygen-, or halide-ligands. However, the use of metal-based fragments as ligands is underdeveloped, which contrasts to the fields of d- and p-block metal-metal complexes that have developed extensively over the last fifty years. This perspective outlines the development of compounds, which possess polarised covalent or donor-acceptor f-element-metal bonds. For this review, the f-element is defined as (i) a group 3 or lanthanide metal: scandium, yttrium, lanthanum to lutetium, or (ii) an actin

BACKGROUND: Despite design and manufacturing improvements in contemporary metal-on-metal hip replacements, the problem of wear particles persists. The local and systemic biological consequences of this ionic debris have been the subject of much investigation and it has become clear that cell-mediated delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions are a discrete mode of osteolysis in susceptible patients.
METHODS: We have carried out a consecutive series of 125 primary hip replacements using the Metasul (Zimmer, Warsaw, IN, USA) bearing couple. The radiographs, periprosthetic tissue and retrieved imp
