Uptake of mercury species by transplanted mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis under estuarine conditions (Krka river estuary).

Biometric features and physico-chemical conditions are responsible for many of the variables for metal concentrations in indigenous populations of mussels. In order to reduce variations and promote the utility of mussels as bioindicator organisms for environmental mercury concentration levels, individuals of approximately uniform biometric characteristics, selected from a culture of 1-year-old mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Lmk., were transplanted to four locations in the Krka river estuary and nearby coastal area (Eastern Adriatic coast). Biometric parameters of mussels and their total a

Comparison between GC-MS and GC-ICPMS using isotope dilution for the simultaneous monitoring of inorganic and methyl mercury, butyl and phenyl tin compounds in biological tissues.

The aim of this work is to compare simultaneous isotope dilution analysis of organotin and organomercury compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC-ICP/MS) on certified bivalve samples. These samples were extracted by microwave with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). Derivatization with both NaBEt4 and NaBPr4 was evaluated, and analytical performances were compared. Two CRM materials, BCR-710 and CRM-477, were analyzed by both techniques to verify accuracy. A mixed spike containing (201)Hg-enriched methyl

On-line hyphenation of capillary electrophoresis with flame-heated furnace atomic absorption spectrometry for trace mercury speciation.

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) was directly interfaced to flame-heated furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (FHF-AAS) via a laboratory-made thermospray interface for nanoliter trace element speciation. The CE-FHF-AAS interface integrated the superiorities of stable CE separation, complete sample introduction, and continuous vaporization for AAS detection without the need of extra external heat sources and any post-column derivation steps. To demonstrate the usefulness of the developed hybrid technique for speciation analysis, three environmentally significant and toxic forms of methylmercury

Development of a new hybrid technique for rapid speciation analysis by directly interfacing a microfluidic chip-based capillary electrophoresis system to atomic fluorescence spectrometry.

This paper represents the first study on direct interfacing of microfluidic chip-based capillary electrophoresis (chip-CE) to a sensitive and selective detector, atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) for rapid speciation analysis. A volatile species generation technique was employed to convert the analytes from the chip-CE effluent into their respective volatile species. To facilitate the chip-CE effluent delivery and to provide the necessary medium for subsequent volatile species generation, diluted HCl solution was introduced on the chip as the makeup solution. The chip-CE-AFS interface was

Factors regulating methyl mercury uptake in a cyanobacterium.

The simultaneous addition of dithiothreitol (DTT), mercaptoethanol, and glutathione (30 microM each) and CH3Hg+ to Nostoc calcicola cells reduced CH3Hg+ uptake in the order GSH > DTT > mercaptoethanol. However, the preexposure of cyanobacterial cells to similar thiols resulted in different pattern of CH3Hg+ uptake in the sequence: GSH > mercaptoethanol > DTT. Light-grown cyanobacterial cells demonstrated a faster initial uptake of CH3Hg+ (rate 0.619 mumol CH3Hg+ mg-1 protein min-1, 10 min) with a biphasic pattern saturating at 30 min (bioconcentration factor = 2.7 x 10(3)). 3-(3,4-Dichlorophen

A comparison of the rates of methylation of mercury(II) species in aquatic media by various organotin and organosilicon moieties.

Metals can be methylated in environmental aqueous media by a variety of organotin and organosilicon compounds. Main group metals and metalloids were surveyed for the identification of species that can either donate or accept methyl groups. The methylation of mercury(II) by trimethyltin cation was found to be a bimolecular reaction, the reaction rate of which decreased with increasing chloride concentration. Kinetic investigations using NMR techniques showed that the most important pairs of reactants were (CH3)3Sn+ + HgCl2, (CH3)3SnCl + HgCl2, and (CH3)3SnCl + HgCl-3. Sodium 2,2,3,3-tetradeuter

Identifying dietary sources and patterns of exposure to toxic metals and other trace elements in Swedish toddlers and young children.

BACKGROUND: Diet is a source of many toxic compounds, but dietary sources of toxic metal exposure in young children are largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: To explore dietary sources and patterns of the most commonly occurring toxic metals and key elements of antioxidant defense. METHODS: We studied 1.5-year-olds (n = 305) and 4-year-olds (n = 288) in the Swedish national dietary survey "Riksmaten Young Children". From a 2-day web-based food diary, habitual consumption (g/day) of specific food groups was estimated using the Multiple Source Method. Dietary patterns were derived using age-specific pri

Methylmercury Uptake into BeWo Cells Depends on LAT2-4F2hc, a System L Amino Acid Transporter.

The organic mercury compound methylmercury (MeHg) is able to target the fetal brain. However, the uptake of the toxicant into placental cells is incompletely understood. MeHg strongly binds to thiol-S containing molecules such as cysteine. This MeHg-l-cysteine exhibits some structural similarity to methionine. System L plays a crucial role in placental transport of essential amino acids such as leucine and methionine and thus has been assumed to also transport MeHg-l-cysteine across the placenta. The uptake of methylmercury and tritiated leucine and methionine into the choriocarcinoma cell lin

Application of chromatographic and electrophoretic methodology to the speciation of organomercury compounds in food analysis.

Trace metals such as mercury, especially its organic compounds, are an important risk to the environment and to man due to their accumulation in the food chain. For this reason, the routine determination of the very toxic methylmercury, and of other organic and inorganic mercury compounds in marine and land animals, vegetables, fruits and fresh water is of increasing importance in health and environmental control programmes throughout the world. The majority of speciation methods for organomercurials involve a series of fundamental steps for the identification and quantification of samples of

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, and ecological and health risks of Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb compounds in shrimp and fish from aquaculture ponds.

Aquaculture organisms may accumulate metals to induce health risks. Compared with the focus on total contents, chemical-specific risk assessment makes reasonable but is rare. Herein, we elucidated occurrence of twelve metal compounds in shrimp and fish (edible muscle, one of major metal-containing and generally targeted organs), water, sediment, and feedstuff from two aquaculture ponds in Zhejiang Province (one of the major aquatic production and consumption areas). We detected Cd(II) (0.6 -71.4 μg kg-1 in 100 % prawn but 63 % fish), methylmercury (MeHg, 0.5 -7.1 μg kg-1 in 100 % fish but 61 %

Multielemental speciation analysis of organometallic compounds of mercury, lead and tin in natural water samples by headspace-solid phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

The development of a simple and rapid multielemental speciation method is described with the ultimate goal to simultaneously determine various organometallic compounds of mercury, lead and tin (inorganic mercury, methylmercury, trimethyllead, triethyllead, monobutyl-, dibutyl- and tributyltin) in natural water samples. The analytical method consists on the ethylation with NaBEt4, simultaneous headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of the derivatives and final gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) analysis. After optimization of important process parameters, like SPME fiber co

[Exposure to mercury and population health. I. Immunotoxicity of mercury].

The authors present large numbers of data on influence of the various mercury compounds on the immune system of humans and laboratory animals. The effect of mercury on the immune system was studied mainly in small rodents intoxicated mostly with HgCl2 or methylmercury. Contrary to a number of these data, analogous observations in humans are rare. Stimulating activity of mercury vapours on the immunological system has been reported in workers at chloralkali plants. So far no data are available concerning influence of the mercury vapours on the resistance of humans to neoplasms and infections.

Effects of cadmium and mercury on Na(+)-K+, ATPase and uptake of 3H-dopamine in rat brain synaptosomes.

Effects in vivo of cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (CH3Hg) on Na(+)-K+ ATPase and uptake of 3H-dopamine (DA) in rat brain synaptosomes were studied. These heavy metals significantly inhibited the Na(+)-K+ ATPase activity in a dose-dependent manner. Similarly, inhibition of DA uptake by synaptosomes was also observed in rats treated with these metals. Intraperitoneal route of metal administration was found to be more effective than per os treatment. Mercuric compounds compared to Cd elicited a higher inhibition of Na(+)-K+ ATPase and DA uptake in rat brain synaptosomes.

Molecular mimicry in mercury toxicology.

Molecular mimicry occurs when one molecular entity is "mistaken" for another by cellular or other biological processes, and is thought to arise from structural similarities between the two molecules in question. It has been postulated by others to be important in the mechanism of uptake of toxic metal species into living tissues. A widely accepted example is the transport of methylmercury-cysteine species, which are thought to mimic the amino acid methionine. We have used mass spectrometry and mercury L(III)-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy to understand the solution structure of complexes b

Aerobic Mercury-resistant bacteria alter Mercury speciation and retention in the Tagus Estuary (Portugal).

Aerobic mercury-resistant bacteria were isolated from the sediments of two highly mercury-polluted areas of the Tagus Estuary (Barreiro and Cala do Norte) and one natural reserve area (Alcochete) in order to test their capacity to transform mercury. Bacterial species were identified using 16S rRNA amplification and sequencing techniques and the results indicate the prevalence of Bacillus sp. Resistance patterns to mercurial compounds were established by the determination of minimal inhibitory concentrations. Representative Hg-resistant bacteria were further tested for transformation pathways (

Using Carbon Paste Electrode Modified with Ion Imprinted Polymer and MWCNT for Electrochemical Quantification of Methylmercury in Natural Water Samples.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is one of the most toxic organic mercury compounds found in the environment. The continuous exposure of human beings to this highly toxic compound may damage their nervous system. The present work reports the development and application of a novel electrochemical sensing technique for the quantification of MeHg using a modified carbon paste electrode with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) combined with ion imprinted polymer, which is highly selective toward MeHg (CPE/MWCNTs/IIP-MeHg) detection. The ion imprinted polymer was synthesized using 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (M

Mercury methylation network on microplastics: Multipathway coupling, regulatory mechanisms, and environmental risks.

Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as pervasive environmental contaminants and potential regulators of mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry. Beyond serving as physical carriers, MPs can reshape the physicochemical and microbial microenvironments that control Hg transformation, thereby influencing the formation of methylmercury (MeHg). MPs influence Hg methylation through multiple coupled pathways. Surface adsorption and desorption processes determine the environmental distribution and mobility of Hg species, while aging-induced changes in functional groups on MPs further regulate their interactions with

Evaluation of a dietary methylmercury dosing method for use in elasmobranch toxicology studies.

As mid to upper trophic level predators, elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays) are known to have elevated levels of a potent neurotoxicant, methylmercury (MeHg). The lethality of MeHg across different vertebrate taxa is well established, but its sublethal effects have only been investigated in depth at the scope of human health. The sublethal effects of exposure to MeHg, which are known to impact animal physiology and behavior, remain largely undescribed in elasmobranchs. In this study, a new approach was tested for assessing bioaccumulation and the sublethal effects of MeHg in a coastal sh

Distribution and Environmental Preference of Potential Mercury Methylators in Paddy Soils across China.

The neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg) is produced mainly from the transformation of inorganic Hg by microorganisms carrying the hgcAB gene pair. Paddy soils are known to harbor diverse microbial communities exhibiting varying abilities in methylating inorganic Hg, but their distribution and environmental drivers remain unknown at a large spatial scale. Using hgcA gene amplicon sequencing, this study examined Hg-methylating communities from major rice-producing paddy soils across a transect of ∼3600 km and an altitude of ∼1300 m in China. Results showed that hgcA+ OTU richness was higher in tropi

Sequestering Mercury in Cation Traps of Iron-Phosphate Framework via Isomorphous Substitution Minimizes Microbial Methylation.

A critical consideration for the design of mercury (Hg)-removal materials is preventing microbial methylation of accumulated Hg, a process that forms the highly neurotoxic and bioaccumulative methylmercury (MeHg) during material disposal or post in situ remediation. Inspired by how natural minerals incorporate Hg impurities within crystalline structures through isomorphous substitution, we design an iron-phosphate framework (NH4)Fe2(PO4)2(OH)·2H2O (denoted as NFP) for highly effective Hg sequestration. With its large quantities of negatively charged oxygen-rich channels, NFP effectively attrac
