The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of acidic primers on bonding magnetic steel alloys. Three alloys (XM27, 447J1, and AUM20) were primed with one of the following materials: Acryl Bond, Estenia Opaque Primer, Eye Sight Opaque Primer, M. L. Primer, or Super-Bond liquid. The specimens were bonded with a tri-n-butylborane initiated resin, and bond strength was determined both before and after thermocycling in water. Unprimed specimen was considered as the control. Keratoprosthesis was implanted in 17 eyes with ocular pemphigoid and 7 eyes with Stevens-Johnson syndrome and followed for 6 months to 6 years. Visual outcomes and complications were compared. Pemphigoid was found to have a much better prognosis than did Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Keratoprosthesis is now firmly indicated in elderly pemphigoid patients whose vision in both eyes has become reduced to hand movements or less due to a corneal opacity.

4 cases with differing presentations of contact allergy to acrylates in sculptured acrylic nails are presented. These reactions include nail fold, fingertip and hand dermatitis, face and neck dermatitis, dystrophic nail changes and paraesthesia. We discuss acrylic nails and review the previously published reactions to acrylates in acrylic nails.

We describe the technique of percutaneous vertebroplasty using methyl methacrylate. We injected under the guidance of CT and fluoroscopy a group of 10 patients with back pain caused by a variety of vertebral lesions including severe osteoporosis (n = 4), hemangiomas (n = 5) and metastasis (n = 1). Over varying periods of follow-up (ranging from 4 to 17 months) none of the injected vertebral bodies demonstrated compression. OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to examine the possibility of a delayed hypersensitivity reaction or contact dermatitis occurring in the guinea-pig in response to methacrylate derivatives used as experimental dentine primers.
METHODS: The dentine primers 2-HEMA, GM, MA and MMA were tested in a guinea-pig maximization test.
RESULTS: All the dentine primers tested produced positive delayed hypersensitivity reactions in the guinea-pig. MMA produced the most severe reaction.

We compared the depth of the anterior chamber and the optimal distance refraction in a group of patients with soft and rigid intraocular implants under pilocarpine (maximal ciliary contraction) and cyclopentolate (maximal ciliary relaxation) in order to determine if lens movement might account for the apparent accommodation phenomenon. Lens shifts ranging from 1.5 to 0.02 mm and refractive variations up to 1 D were found. However, the discrepancies between amount of shift and refractive variations suggest that lens movement does not play a relevant role in this phenomenon.

INTRODUCTION: Sculptured artificial acrylic nails are widely used in developed countries. Methylmethacrylate was first reported in 1941 as a cause of allergic contact dermatitis. Since then, occupational contact allergies to acrylates in dentistry, orthopedic surgery, printing industry and other industries have been reported.

The biochemistry of contact lens-cornea interaction is not well understood, although previous studies have suggested that corneal metabolic changes may be the underlying factor in morphological alterations. A method of empirically fitting hard contact lenses in infants and young children is described. It can be performed without the benefit of "K" readings and does not require the patient to be anesthetized. Lens fit is judged by fluorescein pattern, degree of finger tightness on the cornea, and indirect determination of steepness by comparing baseline refraction with final over-refraction using a contact lens of known power. Infection is not a common problem following implant surgery using the bone cement, polymethyl methacrylate. When infection occurs, its often disastrous results makes for major complications. Many methods have been used in an attempt to reduce bacterial contamination at the time of implant surgery, but little attention has been given to the problem of possible effects of implant materials on the immune mechanisms of the host. In the experiments reported here, the in vitro effect of methyl methacrylate monomer on human immunoglobulins was determined using a quantitative gel diffusion technique.
