Noise exposure among construction electricians.

Data-logging noise dosimetry was used to assess the exposure levels of electricians working for a major electrical subcontractor in Washington State at five sites using four types of construction methods. Subjects documented activities and work environment information throughout their work shift, resulting in an activity/exposure record for each of the 174 full-shift samples collected over the 4-month duration of the study. Over 24% of the TWA samples exceeded 85 dBA; 5.2% exceeded the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure limit of 90 dBA. The National Inst

Quantification of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury via Cortical Metrics: Analytical Methods.

Mild traumatic brain injuries are difficult to diagnose or assess with commonly used diagnostic methods. However, the functional state of cerebral cortical networks can be rapidly and effectively probed by measuring tactile-based sensory percepts (called cortical metrics), which are designed to exercise various components of cortical machinery. In this study, such cortical metrics were obtained from 52 college students before and after they experienced sports-related concussions by delivering vibrotactile stimuli to the index and middle fingertips. Performance on four of the sensory test proto

Assessing nutritional diversity of cropping systems in African villages.

BACKGROUND: In Sub-Saharan Africa, 40% of children under five years in age are chronically undernourished. As new investments and attention galvanize action on African agriculture to reduce hunger, there is an urgent need for metrics that monitor agricultural progress beyond calories produced per capita and address nutritional diversity essential for human health. In this study we demonstrate how an ecological tool, functional diversity (FD), has potential to address this need and provide new insights on nutritional diversity of cropping systems in rural Africa. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Data on

Efficacy and Safety of a Percutaneous Tenotomy System for Debridement of Tendinopathic Tissues.

During acute inflammatory phases of tendinopathy, a combination of physical therapy and corticosteroid injections is considered to be moderately effective for acute inflammation. However, surgical debridement of tendinopathic tissues is often required for chronic cases. The TenJet system created by HydroCision, Inc. is a percutaneous device that uses high-pressure saline to debride pathologic tissues during tenotomy. Here, we use a collagenase-induced tendinopathy model on explants from bovine ankle extensor tendons. We use the volume of defect debrided as a metric to determine the efficacy of

Quantitative team performance metrics for dismounted infantry battle drill analysis.

Performance optimization down to the small unit level in the military is critical to the success of the collective force during an operation. However, there remains a lack of objective, quantitative performance metrics to evaluate military-team performance during battle drill training. Our research identified multiple wearable-derived measures that could predict squad performance as aligned to specific battle drill performance constructs. We developed linear mixed-effects models for three critical performance constructs: 1) Communications, 2) Fire Effectiveness, and 3) Violence of Action. In t

Clinically meaningful changes in efficacy outcomes in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) carries a high disease burden, and many studies have been done investigating the efficacy of various medical and surgical therapies. However, outcome metrics have varied across these studies, making it difficult to compare therapeutic efficacy on a large scale. In this article, we discuss various outcome metrics used across prior studies as well as the relationship between these measures. RECENT FINDINGS: Outcome metrics in CRSwNP studies include both clinically assessed and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). The for

Steady-state indicators of the intracranial pressure dynamic system using geodesic distance of the ICP pulse waveform.

Normal functioning of the brain depends on the homeostasis (∼ steady state) of its various physiological sub-systems, one of which is the intracranial pressure (ICP) dynamic system. The ICP dynamic system of an injured brain is susceptible to various acute changes that should ideally be detected by ICP monitoring even for comatose patients. However, the status quo of ICP monitoring solely targets mean ICP. We aimed to demonstrate a novel approach to detect acute deviation from steady state of an ICP dynamic system in an absence of significant mean ICP changes. We hypothesized that steady state

Knowledge and Awareness of Performance Metrics in Dental Image Analysis With Artificial Intelligence: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Researchers and Clinicians.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Appropriate performance metrics are essential for evaluating machine learning (ML) algorithm performance in dental image analysis. A broad variety of performance metrics are used in dental artificial intelligence (AI) research which could cause confusion regarding model performance. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, awareness, and self-reported confidence of oral health researchers and clinicians regarding AI performance metrics. METHODS: This cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey initially recruited participants (n = 100) from the ITU/WHO/WIPO Global Initi

Quantitative Assessment of Cannula Kinematics in Liposuction Surgical Procedures Using a Marker-Based Tracking System.

PURPOSE: The aim is to develop a reliable, objective, and quantitative system for measuring and analyzing the movement of the cannula tip, which is used in liposuction. METHODS: The customized tracking system was designed using an infrared marker set and stereo vision. It was utilized to accurately track and quantify cannula tip movements during liposuction surgery. The accuracy of this system was validated by comparing its measurements to a commercial motion-tracking system. In addition, a new metric, the normalized cannula movement index (nCMI), was supposed to objectively assess cannula st

Flux-Type versus Concentration-Type Sensors in Transdermal Measurements.

New transdermal biosensors measure analytes that diffuse from the bloodstream through the skin, making it important to reduce the system response time and understand measurement output. While highly customized models have been created for specific sensors, a generalized model for transdermal sensor systems is lacking. Here, a simple one-dimensional diffusion model was used to characterize the measurement system and classify biosensors as either flux types or concentration types. Results showed that flux-type sensors have significantly faster response times than concentration sensors. Furthermo

Physical Performance Measures Correlate with Head Impact Exposure in Youth Football.

PURPOSE: Head impact exposure (HIE) (i.e., magnitude and frequency of impacts) can vary considerably among individuals within a single football team. To better understand individual-specific factors that may explain variation in head impact biomechanics, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between physical performance measures and HIE metrics in youth football players. METHODS: Head impact data were collected from youth football players using the Head Impact Telemetry System. Head impact exposure was quantified in terms of impact frequency, linear and rotational head acceleration, a

Alternative metrics for assessing clinical benefit with immunotherapy in oncology.

Therapies for cancer have traditionally been assessed with metrics such as the response rate, hazard ratio, or median survival. Such metrics have value in measuring the outcomes of conventional therapies, but may not be the most appropriate for new therapies. Immuno-oncology therapies offer a new approach to treating cancer by stimulating patients' immune systems to fight cancer. The value of these novel therapies has so far been assessed with traditional metrics, but the different ways in which immuno-oncology therapies work can mean the full value is not captured. Immuno-oncology therapies c

Capturing gait parameters during asymmetric overground walking using ultra-wideband radars: A preliminary study.

This study investigates the deployability of commercially available impulse-radio ultra-wideband radar (UWB) sensors, in accurately detecting and analysing gait patterns during asymmetric overground locomotion. An adjustable knee brace was fitted on the right knee of 10 able-bodied participants, in five different confinement angles, during a 6-meter walking task to simulate asymmetric walking patterns. A computationally efficient signal processing framework extracts seven spatiotemporal gait parameters from six UWB radar signals, based on their joint Range-Doppler-Time representation. Gait asy

The critical role of velocity storage in production of motion sickness.

We propose that motion sickness is mediated through the orientation properties of velocity storage in the vestibular system that tend to align eye velocity produced by the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) with gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA). (GIA is the sum of the linear accelerations acting on the head. In the absence of translational accelerations, gravity is the GIA.) We further postulate that motion sickness produced by cross-coupled vestibular stimulation can be characterized by a metric composed of the disparity between the axis of eye rotation and the GIA, the strength of the

The retinal ganglion cell layer predicts normal-appearing white matter tract integrity in multiple sclerosis: A combined diffusion tensor imaging and optical coherence tomography approach.

We investigated the relationship between retinal layers and normal-appearing white matter (WM) integrity in the brain of patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS), using a combined diffusion tensor imaging and high resolution optical coherence tomography approach. Fifty patients and 62 controls were recruited. The patients were divided into two groups according to presence (n = 18) or absence (n = 32) of optic neuritis. Diffusion tensor data were analyzed with a voxel-wise whole brain analysis of diffusion metrics in WM with tract-based spatial statistics. Thickness measurement

Towards standardising retinal OCT angiography image analysis with open-source toolbox OCTAVA.

Quantitative assessment of retinal microvasculature in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images is important for studying, diagnosing, monitoring, and guiding the treatment of ocular and systemic diseases. However, the OCTA user community lacks universal and transparent image analysis tools that can be applied to images from a range of OCTA instruments and provide reliable and consistent microvascular metrics from diverse datasets. We present a retinal extension to the OCTA Vascular Analyser (OCTAVA) that addresses the challenges of providing robust, easy-to-use, and transparent

Rethinking Diagnostic Performance Metrics in Imaging Artificial Intelligence: Lessons from Caries Detection on Radiographs.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) systems for radiographic caries detection are commonly evaluated using a small set of performance metrics, yet these measures are frequently reported and interpreted without the contextual information required for clinically meaningful conclusions. SUMMARY: This narrative review focuses on performance metrics - confusion-matrix measures (sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, predictive values, F1 score and related summaries) and discrimination metrics (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and area under the precision recall curve) - and
