Uses and Conservation of Chaya in the Southeast of Mexico.

Chaya (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius) is a native Mesoamerican plant that's been tapped for its nutritional and medicinal properties for centuries. Preserving this plant is crucial, given its significance in ensuring food security and supporting traditional medicine. Chaya is packed with protein, vitamins, and minerals, making it an excellent nutrient source for rural communities. Research has also highlighted its medicinal benefits, including lowering blood sugar levels and improving digestive health. This drought-resistant plant thrives in poor soil, making it perfect for sustainable farming in

Fusariosis in Mexico: cases and gaps to be addressed.

This mini-review synthesizes four decades of Mexican fusariosis literature, organizing cases into four clinical categories: ocular, superficial/cutaneous, invasive/disseminated, and central nervous system (CNS) disease. It identified significant gaps in national surveillance, molecular diagnostics, antifungal susceptibility testing, access to effective therapies, specialized mycology infrastructure, and highlights the urgent need for a coordinated clinical mycology network in Mexico. Fusariosis, caused by Fusarium species, presents a broad clinical spectrum, from keratitis and onychomycosis in…

First report of pediatric ehrlichiosis in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Ehrlichia chaffeensis is responsible for most cases of human ehrlichiosis, an acute febrile tick-borne disease. This clinical entity is more commonly reported in adults from the United States. Therefore, it is of special interest to characterize this disease in children, given that very few cases in children have been reported outside of this country. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 15-year-old female from northeastern Mexico with a five-day history of myalgias, arthralgias, fever, abdominal pain, rash, and somnolence. The possibility of tick-borne disease was suspected con…

New Mexico's COVID-19 Experience.

The 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread worldwide, infiltrating, infecting, and devastating communities in all locations of varying demographics. An overwhelming majority of published literature on the pathologic findings associated with COVID-19 is either from living clinical cohorts or from autopsy findings of those who died in a medical care setting, which can confound pure disease pathology. A relatively low initial infection rate paired with a high biosafety level enabled the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator to conduct full autopsy examinations on suspected C…

Tuberculosis in Children in a Pediatric Hospital in Mexico.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global problem and a diagnostic challenge, especially in pediatrics. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical, microbiological, radiological, and histopathological data of TB in children. A 7-year retrospective and descriptive cohort study that included 127 patients under 18 years of age with diagnosis of active TB was conducted from 2011 to 2018 in a pediatric hospital. Tuberculosis was microbiologically confirmed using Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining, culture or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in a total of 94 (74%) cases. Thirty-three cases were defined as

Mycetoma and the Community Dermatology Program, Mexico.

The Community Dermatology Program established in the state of Guerrero, Mexico for almost 30 y provides an adaptable method of detecting and monitoring skin neglected tropical diseases such as mycetoma, which is endemic in the state. The program utilises general and thematic teaching elements combined with distance learning through teledermatology, direct patient consultations and close collaboration with community teams. Using this approach, a picture of mycetoma in Guerrero has emerged, with a focal hot spot located in the southern part of the state in the Costa Chica region. Although in muc…

A case series of cutaneous lymphomas in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Primary cutaneous lymphomas are a rare heterogeneous group of T and B cell skin neoplasms without any evidence of extracutaneous disease at the time of diagnosis, which show considerable differences in histology, phenotype and prognosis. CASE REPORTS: Five cases of cutaneous lymphomas treated at the Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez from 2010 to 2018 are described. The most frequent clinical presentations in these patients were dermatitis, blood scabs, and necrotic ulcers. The most common immunophenotype was non-Hodgkin T/NK primary nasal extranodal cutaneous lymphomas. T
